GATOR GAZETTE Volume 28, Issue 6 September 23, 2014 HOLY NAME OF JESUS SCHOOL 6325 CROMWELL PLACE; NEW ORLEANS, LA 70118-6260 Dear Holy Name Family: I would like to start by thanking the PTC for a fantastic Back to School BBQ on Sunday. Barbara Mazzanti, chair of the event, and her team did a terrific job. Many thanks also to Mr. Neil McClure, father of Sullivan and Jack, for his excellent culinary skills and hard work! We had a great turnout, and a good time was had by all. Mrs. Houck and I met with the 7th grade parents last night to discuss the high school admissions process. We know this is a stressful time for everyone. Please let us know if you have any questions about the process. Tomorrow is Mercy Day. We are thrilled to welcome several Sisters of Mercy to Mass and a reception. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate them and their great work. Please join us in praying for their health and mission. It has come to my attention that parents are not sure who to speak to in certain situations. Per the handbook, we ask that you follow a protocol when there is a concern: 1. Consultation with the respective Teacher. 2. If Upcoming School Events September 24 - Mercy Day Mass 8:30 A.M. Gazette Deadline September 26 - Annual Giving Commitment Cards Due October 1 - 8:30 A.M. If still unresolved, consultation with the Pastor. I hope this helps to clear any confusion. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has responded to the Annual Giving Drive thus far. Your generosity is deeply appreciated. If you have not made a commitment yet, there is still time! Any amount will help. The Annual Fund for the Advancement of Holy Name of Jesus School is the primary means for members of the Holy Name of Jesus community, and the community at large, to join together in a meaningful effort to support the mission of this great school. There are a myriad of expenses associated with providing a top-quality education, and tuition only covers approximately 88% of the cost of a Holy Name of Jesus education. I extend my deepest thanks for your contribution. As always, please contact me should you need anything. In His Holy Name, Jessica A. Dwyer, M.Ed. The t-shirt order form has been sent home and is also attached. ALL FORMS ARE DUE BY 9/26/14. There will be no second order this year. Our first FAIR COLLECTION DAY is THIS Friday, September 26th. Students who bring in one of the requested items may wear a Holy Name T-shirt with PE shorts, uniform shorts/pants, or jeans on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29. All students are required to follow the uniform policy. GATOR ATHLETICS Our HNJ Cross Country competed in the 2014 Rummel/ Chapelle Invitational Meet on Saturday. The race had approximately 2,000 athletes competing in 7 different races. It was awesome watching our kids continue to improve. On average our runners improved their 1.5 mile run by 40 seconds in two weeks. This showed in the girl’s race this week. Our Girls Team took 4th place, moving up by 2 spots in one week. Even with the improvement that our boys are doing, other teams are improving also. Our boys fell one spot to number 7. Please come out this Saturday, September 27, to cheer on our Gators as they continue to make their run for another Championship at the St. Mathew Crusader Classic. Race location is at LaSalle Landing in Kenner, LA. This race will be on the river side of the levee. Girls will arrive at 7:00 am and boys should arrive before 7:30 am. Art Department goes SQUARE ...1 Art...that is! All art students from pre k to seventh grade have been furiously working on their works of art to be submitted to Square 1 Art. Square 1Art is a great way to share your students artistic talent with family and friends. Upon completion all student art work is submitted to Square 1 Art in Georgia and the company transforms their original art into a variety of products that parents and friends can purchase on line. As a way of saying thank you to the students for all their hard work, the company sends each participant a sheet of "squickers" which are small 1.25" square stickers of their artwork in full color. The older kids usually love to trade them with each other. Some of the themes we have been working on in art are: THIS WEEK: Tuesday: Red Volleyball @ Haynes Wednesday: 6th Footbal @ St. Martin’s; 7th Football @ LaSalle Thursday: White Volleyball @ St. Andrew’s Saturday: CC @ LaSalle Landing; Swim Meet @ Ardin Cahill www.hnjschool.org Spaghetti wiggle monsters Harry the hungry caterpillar Blue dogs of a different color Van Gogh in studio Aboriginal drawings Warm and cool fleur de lis Kaleidoscopic drawings Fleur de lis originals New Orleans cityscapes ART CONTINUED... In a few weeks time the company will send home with each child his very own brochure showing his/her artwork displayed on different products available for purchase. Just like last year, parents and friends will have time to look over the brochure and samples in the school lobby. All will be able to purchase on line or via the art department. All information will be in the brochure. LATER GATORS The statements for August have been sent out via email. Please reach out to Addie, [email protected], if you did not receive an email so your file can be updated. I appreciate your patience in getting the new system in place. Lots of them, just in time to wreak havoc in one’s moods, motivation, self-confidence, and effort. It is hard to withstand their push-pull at a time when high school acceptance is on the line. Parents feel the frustration of trying to corral their kids into maximum production mode (“This is the critical quarter! This is the one that really counts!”). Many a student will feel the instant overwhelm of that statement, and start to check out mentally. Helicopters. This is another word for parents when they get into a state of urgency about their kid’s performance. They hover. They nag. They make every conversation about school work. They occasionally lose their minds and try to rescue their student from the consequences of his or her lack of effort, unacceptable grades (“She can’t fail this test!”), or poor behavior choice (“Can we postpone this detention? He has a game!”). Perfectly rational people suffer from this temporary insanity, so I know it’s normal. I was one of them. Anxiety. Epidemics are diseases that pass very quickly from person to person. Anxiety fits that description perfectly. Seventh graders and their parents are swimming in a holding tank of anxiety triggers, which tend to be messages of oneupmanship, rumors, or prejudices about certain schools. Anxiety encourages black-and-white thinking, which always forgets to take into account the wonderful individuality of our children; it also shakes our faith in our children’s strengths and resilience. If we don’t have faith in them, who will? Transition Terrors. “How will I measure up? Will I have any friends? What do I need to be able to do when I get to high school? What happens if I don’t get into my first choice—will anyone still like me? Will my parents still love me? How do I handle all the conversations about high school that I hear every day? Do I have any input on the subject of where I’m going?” This is where we need to do a lot of listening and reflecting back what we hear our kids saying. We need to help them focus on simple day-to-day things they can do, and talk with them openly about the choices of schools, and of course, Plan B. Blossoming. Let’s not forget the wonderful side of our “Top Dogs.” They are looking more grownup; they are coming into their own personalities, however rattled by hormones they may be; they are showing some signs of social stability; they are more thoughtful in their responding; some are shining for the first time as athletes. It is a joy to see their developmental steps, and it should give us faith that there will be more and more of them. Mrs. Lisa Houck, LCSW Social Worker ATTACHMENTS: 1.
