IFE Qualifications
IFE Level 2 Certificate in Fire Science, Operations and Safety (VRQ)
Designed to recognise the critical understanding and understanding required by those in firefighter roles, this
qualification is assessed by a three-hour examination paper containing 120 multiple choice questions.
Level 3 Certificate in Fire Science, Operations, Fire Safety and Management (VRQ)
This qualification has been designed to recognise the knowledge and understanding of those who are
operating, or preparing to operate at Crew Manager or equivalent level. It will also meet the needs of other
fire professionals operating in a range of roles such as fire safety specialists.
In order to achieve the qualification, candidates have to achieve four units. Each unit is assessed via a onehour examination containing multiple choice and written answer questions. The units that make up this
qualification are: Unit 1 - Fire Engineering Science; Unit 2 - Fire Operations; Unit 3 - Fire Safety; Unit 4 Management and Administration.
Success in this examination will also allow candidates to meet the academic requirement for membership of
the Institution at Technician grade (TIFireE).
Level 3 Diploma in Fire Science and Fire Safety (VRQ)
This qualification has been designed to meet the needs of fire professionals operating in, or preparing for, a
range of roles at level 3 including Watch Managers or equivalent and Fire Safety professionals.
In order to achieve the Diploma, Candidates will need to achieve the two mandatory units in Fire Science and
Fire Safety and achieve two of the optional units. The Optional Units available are: Unit 3: Fire Service
Operations and Incident Command – International; Unit 4: Aviation Fire Operations; Unit 5: Leadership and
Management in Fire and Rescue; Unit 6: Fire Service Operations and Incident Command – UK
Candidates can also opt to focus on individual units. Each unit is assessed by examination. Examinations will
last for 3 hours. Candidates will be required to provide extended written responses (essay style) to 6 out of the
10 questions in the examination paper.
Success in this qualification will also allow candidates to meet the academic requirement for membership of
the Institution at Graduate grade (GIFireE).
Level 4 Certificate in Fire Science and Fire Safety (VRQ)
This qualification has been designed to meet the needs of fire professionals operating in, or preparing for, a
range of roles at level 4 including Station Managers or equivalent, Fire Safety and Fire Investigation
professionals.
In order to achieve the qualification, Candidates will need to achieve the two mandatory units in Fire Science
and Fire Safety and achieve two of the optional units. The Optional Units available are: Unit 3: Fire Service
Operations and Incident Command; Unit 4: Aviation Fire Operations; Unit 5: Leadership and Management in
Fire and Rescue; Unit 6: Fire Investigation; Unit 7: Civil Emergency and Disaster Management.
Candidates can also opt to focus on individual units. Each unit is assessed by examination. Examinations will
last for 3 hours. Candidates will be required to provide extended written responses (essay style) to 6 out of the
8 questions in the examination paper.
Success in this examination will also allow candidates to meet the academic requirement for membership of
the Institution at Member grade (MIFireE).
