Fall 2014
Video Analysis Comes to CESC
Director of Coaching Kenrick Ramirez and Doug Bruce, owner of Optical Sports
Analysis, are in the beginning stages of a partnership to start video analysis services for Columbus
Express. “We hope to bring a new dimension to Express soccer in the coming years, making them a
flagship club in the use of video analysis, and at the same time give the players at the club the best
chance of maximizing their potential and talent,” Doug said.
Doug will be hard at work during the CESC Fall Classic, November 1-2.
Currently, he plans to film as many games as possible, potentially one in every
time slot available, with hopes of purchase options for parents. Each game
Doug Bruce
filmed can also be broken down into “Team Tactical Clips” for coaches and

players, “Individual Player Game Clips” for parents and players themselves to

view their own game, and “Highlight/Recruitment” videos, and the “Full Game
Video” option.
Video analysis is an effective tool for improving a player’s performance. “The most efficient method [to
communicate corrections to players] is to show them visual images, because that gets the idea across very quickly,”
Carles Planchart, leader of team analytics for Pep Guaradiola’s Bayern Munich team, said.
Additionally, Doug is looking to purchase a Hi-Pod, an aerial videography system that allows filming from
the sidelines and from 30 feet in the air, while controlling the camera and viewing the game for ground level. “This
should allow us to film a lot more games and give as many teams as possible the opportunity to see video analysis of
their performances, which I believe is an essential part of the learning process in soccer and all sports,” Doug said.
As a former Performance Analyst in the English Premier League, Doug has also self-contracted work with
the University of Louisville Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Men’s Tennis programs for the past three years. He
launched Optical Sports Analysis in March and primarily focuses on soccer matches.
Working as an Express coach for the past two years, Doug will coach the U17 Boys Blue and the U15 Boys
Orange this spring.
Alliance Training Open to U13, U14 Girls and Boys
Registration is open for the Alliance Winter Training, December 2014-March 2015, for U13
and U14 girls and boys.
Columbus Express is continuing its alliance partnership with South Central Soccer Academy and Cutters Soccer Club. This partnership is designed to provide “expanded opportunities to
our member players with their club teams as well an opportunity of combined talent of the three
clubs,” Director of Coaching Kenrick Ramirez explained.
This year’s program will be organized by Alliance Winter Training Coordinators, Kevin
Robson and Brad Swenby . Both currently serve as coaches for the IU Men’s Soccer Team, Kevin as
the Assistant Coach and Brad as a volunteer assistant specializing in goalkeeping.
Training sessions run for 90 minutes roughly once a week. Scrimmages are scheduled for
March. Training rotates between the facilities of all three clubs. Last year coaches from IU,
UINDY, IUPUI, Xavier, Wright State, Louisville, Franklin College and the Indiana Fire DA ran
training sessions.
The full schedule, training locations, and registration
link can be found at allianceindiana.com. The cost for the
Kevin Robson (top), Brad Swenby (bottom)
program is $220.00, payable through GotSoccer in the
online registration.
