PTSA MembersAwards- Durant Principal Pam Bowden surprised Jessi Rae Varnum at today's
PTSA Executive Board meeting by announcing that Jessi Rae had been selected
as Hillsborough County PTSA Student of the Year. Durant PTSA was presented
with three awards for programs and membership achievement at the annual
Hillsborough County PTSA Awards Banquet this week. Irv Dupre was selected as
Hillsborough County PTSA President of the Year. Michele Graham, Durant PTSA VP
and Website manager, was nominated in the communications category and Laura
Estes-Swilley, Durant English Department, was nominated for a County Teacher of the
Year award for her outstanding work with the Reflections program. Three of her
students won first prize in the Reflections competition at the Hillsborough County
level. Thanks to Madeleine Landau, PTSA Recording Secretary, for her diligence in
getting the nominations to HCC PTA/PTSA and congratulations to all our nominees!
Elections- The current PTSA Board was reelected to their offices at the annual
elections meeting held Thursday, May 1. If you are interested in working with the new
Board on a committee, please contact Mary VanDeGrift, VP of Volunteers,
at [email protected]. The PTSA Planning Meeting for 2014-2015 is scheduled
for June 11 at 9am at Panera's on Lithia Road. Contact Irv Dupre if you wish to
participate.
Diamond Awards- Durant Diamond Awards are next Monday night. Diamond Awards
recognizes academic and athletic achievement at Durant. Every student selected for
Honor Court receives an award at the ceremony. The event starts at 6:30PM in Durant's
Auditorium and parents are encouraged to accompany their student. Scholarships also
are awarded and recipients names are usually not revealed before the ceremony at the
giving organizations' request. Students are invited to support their classmates.
Teacher and Student of the Month- Constance Wharton, Durant IMPACT teacher,
head basketball and track coach and member of the Guidance Department, is
May PTSA Teacher of the Month. Congratulations to Bailey Blount, our
PTSA Student of the Month for May and final selection for this school year. Bailey
was nominated for assisting with the plant nursery and repairs of an irrigation pipe at the
orange grove. These two winners received gift cards from Brocato's Sandwich Shop,
Jarrett Ford of Plant City, Chik-fil-A of Valrico, Menchie's Yogurt, Sweet
Tomatoes, Bloomingdale Pizza and Buffalo Wild Wings. We thank our Durant
business partners for contributing to our PTSA recognition program and ask for you to
shop and eat at these establishments that help boost morale. Let them know you are
from Durant High School.
Scholarships- Congratulations to Trey VanDeGrift for his selection to the US Air
Force Academy. At Monday's Diamond Awards, we will be announcing the winners of
the Durant PTSA Scholarships and many other scholarships for our Cougars. Please
plan on attending Monday night with your student.
Football Jamboree- Next Thursday night at Durant will be the annual football
Jamboree featuring Plant City vs. Armwood at 6:30pm and Strawberry Crest vs Durant
immediately following. Each game is about one hour (two quarters) and Durant
PTSA will be manning the Concession Stand with great food and drink. If you'd like to
help out with concessions, PLEASE contact me in Guidance or at this email
of [email protected]. We need your help to end this year's fund-raising and
provide a great way to fund scholarships, student morale programs, mini-grants,
Conference Night meals, Teacher Welcome Back Breakfast, and Teacher/Student of
the Month programs. Please get involved with your student's education and your
Durant PTSA.
