TRJDC Newsletter
Trent Regional Junior Doctors Committee
Spring 2014
Hello from the Chair
Hello, and welcome to the first 2014 Trent Junior
Doctors Committee newsletter. My name is Dr. Zead
Said, I’m a psychiatry registrar in Sheffield and current
Chair. The committee works to bring the local BMA
reps of the region together four times a year, to discuss,
resolve and help each other with regional issues and
consists of four posts: Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary
and “4th Member” who can vary their role depending
on requirements. We work closely with the national
committee and with the Regional Industrial Relations
Officer to provide help and support with union issues
wherever we can.
Our meetings are open to anyone, whether or not
you are a BMA member, so we would invite you to
come along, see what we do and get involved!
We are always looking for new local reps to join us.
Come along to the next Trent RJDC meeting:
The next meeting will be in June 2014. All are
welcome to come along to listen to and raise issues.
Please email [email protected] for more
information about how to attend. Please enjoy the
newsletter, created by Dr. Sarah Hallett, our 4th
Member and Communications Officer. I hope to hear
from you soon!
Junior Doctors Conference 2014:
Your Chance to Lead Change
From sweeping reforms of postgraduate medical
training to negotiations of new hospital doctor
contracts: change is everywhere within the
profession, and so there has never been a better time
to get involved. The BMA Junior Doctors Conference
is fast approaching (17th May 2014), where the
priorities for the national committee are set for the
coming year. This is an excellent place to have your
say and really make a difference to what is
happening. Each region has a set number of places
for attendees; to find out how you can apply and for

Local Rep Spotlight
Sarah Hallett, Derby Rep
Hello, my name is Sarah and I’m an F1 Doctor at Derby.
While my enthusiasm for medico-politics goes back
much longer, I first became involved with the BMA
towards the end of medical school. I’ve become more
involved as a Junior Doctor after seeing the value of the
BMA. At a local level, they are crucial for helping with
workplace issues, including representing juniors on
banding appeals. Nationally, the BMA’s remit is huge,
but of particular importance at the moment are the
ongoing negotiations with the Government for our
new contract. It will affect every aspect of our working
lives, from training to pay.
Case Study: Incorrect Banding
This local case involved a number of BMA members
who were working in Plastic Surgery. The post had
historically been a Band 3 (100%) but had been
down-banded to 2a. The junior doctors raised
concerns regarding monitoring, and were granted
further monitoring, which confirmed that the
doctors should have been paid Band 3. After
another monitoring period where this banding
and supplement was not upheld, the BMA assisted
8 members, and legal action together with a
banding appeal was threatened. Fortunately, the
matter was resolved prior to legal action, and the
majority of the doctors have received their arrears
(ranging from £8,000 to £48,000).

Concerns Raised Over Selection
Test Pilot
In January 2014, 700 (out of a potential 5,000)
applicants to first year specialty training and core
training programmes took part in a pilot of a new
test for entry into specialty training. The Specialty
Selection Test (SST) is a broad-based exam, comprised
of a Clinical Problem Solving test and a Situational
Judgement Test, and would be implemented across
specialty and core training programme applications.
The BMA Junior Doctors’ Committee wrote to Health
Education England in December 2013, voicing ongoing
serious concerns about the test.

The letter from JDC co-chairs Kitty Mohan and Andrew
Collier and joint deputy chair Tim Yates says: ‘We believe
that specialty recruitment should be evidence-based and
specialty specific and remain unconvinced that an SST
will improve upon the current specialty selection
procedures.’ The SST was originally proposed as a
method of making long-listing for specialty training
effective and measurable, but the focus has changed to
be about incorporating NHS values into the selection
process. Junior doctor leaders argue that this could be
delivered through current selection processes. They are
also unconvinced by the validity of the pilot, which is due
to be analysed in June, before full implementation next
year. HEE says the results from those who took place in
the pilot this year will not form part of the selection
process and will be anonymised.

BMA Communities (communities.bma.org.uk)
is a new online space where you can join in with
discussions and start conversations about many
different topics. The forums will support and inform the
BMA’s work and priorities. Despite still being a work in
progress, a wide range of discussions are already taking
place. Recent threads include “Twitter, Facebook and
robotic buttocks: the future of medical learning?”
and “One doctor per London A&E department
receiving psychological help.”
