There they were introduced to various sports like soccer, baseball and softball. Joey developed a deep passion for the game of baseball. He had his favorites but his favorite professional baseball player was Frank Thomas who played for the Chicago White Sox. Joey San Nicolas Memorial Golf Tournament As Joey got older, his interest was geared to play high school football. Joey was preparing to do just that at Bonita High School. Unfortunately the opportunity to excel as a football player never came to be. Joey’s life was tragically cut short on May 5, 1996. Joey is forever missed. By all those that loved him, his parents, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. In memory of the passion that Joey had for sports, the Joey San Nicolas Memorial Golf Tournament was established in 2000. It is a way for those of us that long for another special moment with Joey, to express honor in refection of his life. It’s an annual event that reminds us not only of Joey but also how precious life is. It allows us time to be around those that are important in our lives and share another memory together. We sometimes take each others existence for granted, whether we see each other often or occasionally and this is a great day to remember the importance of family and friendship. In 2006 the initial scholarship was awarded to a graduating senior baseball player from Bonita High School. This past June, the ninth scholarship was awarded. Since 2006, $4,500 in scholarships have been awarded. An additional $2,000 has been donated to the Bonita Baseball Program and over $800 worth of Christmas toys have been donated to needy families from Bonita High School.
