PRINCIPAL’S PRATTLE
The first three days of the week were just beautiful, nearly all the
smoke haze had disappeared (for the moment) and our kids really
enjoyed their swimming lessons in the lovely afternoon heat. I
would like to again thank all our parents who have helped out either
getting into the water, assisting the junior grade getting dressed and
undressed or just walking the children to the pool and back. Your
help is very much appreciated. It is quite amazing watching the
growth in confidence and skill during our brief but intensive swimming sessions. Seeing children who were unable to put their heads
underwater at the beginning and here we are six lessons later and
they are floating on their backs, doing torpedos and even trying a
stroke or two! It is just amazing! Unfortunately for our swimming
program (but fortunately for our farmers, Thursday and Friday got a
bit messy with cold and wet days ending our school week. Fortunately the forecast for the start of next week looks very nice for our
young swimmers!
Farmer’s Market: Sunday 6th of April.
After the very successful Market Day we had last year we are planning to have two markets this year. We had a great roll up for our
meeting last Tuesday, with the organising group getting straight
into business. The vast majority of planning and work is now done
or allocated to different people to finish up. The date has been set,
and our next Farmer’s Market will be on Sunday 6th of April. This
is the first Sunday of the Term One holiday. Signs will be up and
about in the very near future and we will be looking for stall holders once again. Stall prices will be $10 for an outside stall $15 for a
stall in the multi and $15 for a powered stall. If you are interested
in having a stall please ring the school on 56346325.
Breakfast Club: Don’t forget about our Breakie Club, Children
are invited to come to school a little earlier on this day and join in
with their classmates to enjoy a free breakfast.
School Photos: I am writing this in advance to the date, but it
looks like our school photos will be in the multipurpose hall as the
forecast for the day is not looking too bright. Hopefully all goes
well.
Yinnar & District Sports News: Retraction from last issue. The
Yinnar & District Whole School Athletics Day will occur on Thursday 27th of March, not February as stated in last week’s newsletter,
so pencil it in to your dairies as it is a great day for the kids.

School BBQ
On Thursday the 13th of February Thorpdale Primary School held its annual school BBQ. The BBQ incorporated an information night on reading
and homework. During this session, the teachers talked with parents
about the expectations of reading at Thorpdale Primary School. After
the formalities, everyone enjoyed a lovely BBQ dinner. It was great to
see so many families turn up and we welcome all our new families to our
school.

School Swimming
Students at Thorpdale Primary School have began their swimming lessons. Students in all year levels learn basic water skills, swimming
strokes, water familiarisation and pool safety. It has been great to see
all students getting involved and enjoying being in the water.

Woolworths Earn and Learn
Thank you to everyone who supported our school by collecting Woolworths Earn
& Learn Points in 2013. Due to everyone’s contribution we were able to receive a
number of exciting new products for the school. This includes a brand new book
stand for the school library. These new educational resources will be put to very
good use and again we would like to thank everyone for supporting the Woolworths Earn & Learn Program.

Buddy activities
Thorpdale Primary school Buddy program began this week. The aim of
the buddy program is to ease the transition into primary school for the
Prep child by providing them with a safe, reliable and positive buddy.
“Buddies" is a very enjoyable and positive activity that allows all involved
to feel special and valued. During our buddy session this week, the
students read with their buddy and made an under the sea water
bottle. After they had finished they got to eat some yummy jelly fish
made by Miss Reggardo.

Leadership Roles
At the start of Term 1 students in Years 4-6 had the opportunity to apply for
a number of leadership roles. Students in these year levels had to write
and present a speech to students in Years 2-6. Students then voted on
those individuals who they thought possesses the best qualities to make a
good leader within the school. Congratulations to all those students who
where involved.

Every day counts – school attendance
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with
students coming to school each and every day.
Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss
four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can
affect their educational outcomes.
The main reasons for absence are:
Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that
they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.
It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term if it can be
avoided.
“Day off” – Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates –
every day counts.
Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can
do together to ensure they don’t fall behind:

Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.
Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher early as early
as possible.
From 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an
acceptable reason.
If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work
together to get your child to school every day.
