Humboldt Park
Has A Story.
Diamond number 7.
Humboldt Park is one of the jewels of the Chicago Park District. And like all the fields in
Humboldt, diamond number 7 is heavily used spring, summer and fall. “We have a really big
issue with compaction,” says Adam Schwerner, Director of Natural Resources for the Parks.
“Therefore it holds a lot of water, so we have to do aerating and top dressing and seeding.
We have to go back in there and rework the fields pretty consistently. So we need reliable
pieces of equipment that make this job quick.” That’s where Kaj Moyer and Shorewood Home
& Auto come in. “It’s about making sure they get all their mowers up and ready, getting them
prepped up, getting all their fields ready, after the long winters that we have around here.”
2 teams fighting for a place in the standings.
Most days, the focus is on the game. And this was a big one for the Little Cubs, according
to Coach Adrian Sagee: “We’re trailing the Yankees by one.” For Little Cardinals Coach
Andrell Holloway, win or lose, “I like coaching because it’s a good way for these kids to learn
teamwork.” That fits perfectly with The Park District’s philosophy. “We’re ‘kids first,’” says
Adam. “We want to get kids in the parks, get them physically engaged. Kids are learning a
tremendous amount when they play sports.”
1 all-star team at the heart of a neighborhood.
Humboldt Park is “really very much the heart of the community,” adds Adam. “There’s a whole
diverse community that uses this park. It’s keeping people engaged, providing an opportunity for
people to get out of their houses, away from the electronic devices and out into nature, moving
and getting exercise, engaging with other people.” That’s why keeping it in good shape, even
under tough conditions, is so important. “It gets used a lot, but any given day you come out here,
it’s looking like it does today: beautifully groomed, well maintained, a pleasant park to be in. If
this field could talk, I think it would say that it’s keeping people happy.”

The Challenge
“Overall, We have 8,300 acres to
manage, 800 fields – we’re very
reliant on equipment. And when
you’ve got a lot of use, you need a lot
of maintenance.”
Adam Schwerner
Director of Natural Resources
Chicago Park District
The Response
“The Chicago Park District uses
five different types of John Deere
equipment: gasoline 925 and larger
diesel 997 ZTraks; 1445s with cabs
on them for summer and winter
use; 1600s, which are larger, wide
open area cutting mowers; and
walk-behind mowers for the finer
grooming. We have oil changes at
one hundred and two hundred hour
intervals, and pre-scheduled blade
sharpenings. And we’ll go out and
take care of the machines in the
fields for them.”
