September 2014
Hi all and welcome again to the
SFML Tractor Times, where we hope
to share with you what is happening
within Southland Farm Machinery
and in the world of John Deere.
Now we all know it has been wet!
I’ve found myself wearing my
gumboots more than usual but like
true kiwis everyone just rolls up their
sleeves and keeps working. Let’s
hope it dries up soon.
Our workshops are still busy
preparing new tractors and
supporting our existing customers
with servicing and repairs. Over
the last 3 months we have heavily
invested in more employees, hiring 4
new staff members to ensure we can
continue to provide the best possible
service and support available.
Silage wagons and bale feeders are
also running at full capacity getting
a good work out in the mud so you
may see a few SFML trucks you
could mistake for farm utes in the
paddocks of Southland and Otago.
One of the latest initiatives we
have rolled out is Southland Farm
Machinery’s new website. This will
become a great resource for all our
clients with many helpful tools at
your fingertips including an online
service booking tool, current finance
information and a news and events
blog.
John Deere finance rates are
expected to increase over the
following few months. This is a great
time to talk to your local salesman
about capping your interest rate.
Recently more and more farmers
have been interested in Ag
Management Solutions (AMS)
products Southland Farm Machinery
has to offer, which allow the farmer
to be as accurate as possible when
working the land. These devices
range from very basic to large
complex systems, all with one
goal in mind, to assist the farmer
as much as possible allowing pin
point precision for all ground work
requirements.
Spring is finally here and we hope
to see more sun gearing up for
the busiest months of the year. To
celebrate the arrival of spring we
are giving away a signed Southland
Stags jersey, visit page 7 of this
newsletter to find your entry form.
Simply fill in the details and return it
to us by the 17th of October for your
chance to win.
All the best to our clients for the
calving and lambing season. We
hope to see you and your John
Deere’s out working in the sunshine
soon.

ARGYLE STATION
Forty minutes north of Gore lies Gunton Farms or better known
as Argyle Station. With 14,000ha in total, of which 2500ha is
cultivatable and more than 48,000 stock units including deer,
sheep and beef, they need machinery they can rely on to do the
job.
To help service the needs of their large business, Gunton Farms
recently purchased two new John Deere tractors, a 6150R and a
7230R. Purchased at the most recent Waimumu Field days, they
took advantage of John Deere’s great finance options. The 6150R
is a superb utility tractor, known for being solid and reliable. This
tractor has John Deere’s intelligent power management system

EXTENDED SERVICE INTERVALS OPTIONAL
Recently John Bateman a representative
from John Deere Lubricants spoke to
Southland Farm Machinery staff and
customers about John Deere’s superior
oil range. For more than 20 years John
Deere has worked with some of the largest
oil manufacturing companies in world
to design, develop and produce their
exclusive range of John Deere lubricants
and ensuring that John Deere Plus 50 II is
the best off highway engine oil available.
Right from the start John Deere recognizes
and makes the distinction between the
requirements of an “on highway” & “off
highway engine”. In short, tractors need
more from an engine oil than Trucks
do. Off Highway equipment such as
Agricultural & Construction equipment
have a much higher duty cycle and hourly
fuel burn than “on highway” equipment,
like trucks. In fact the demand is typically
double or more in off highway equipment.
However the vast majority of heavy duty
diesel engine oil on the market is primarily
designed for “on highway” applications.
Because of this, over 20 years ago
John Deere decided to develop an oil
specifically to protect its engines from this
higher work load.
All engine oil starts with the same crude
oil, and depending on the company they
then choose a refined grade of this base
fluid. To complete their oil, the company
then selects their own combination of
additives to be blended with the base
oil. The combination of additives that the
manufacturer chooses, separates the
poor quality oil from the great oil. Many
oil manufactures put the bare minimum of
additives in their oil (around 10-15%) in
order to reduce cost – yet because they
do this they reduce the quality of their oil
and ultimately their oil fails to protect their
customer’s machinery. John Deere’s
engine and transmission oils are made
with superior additive packages which
are 25% to 30% larger than other market
brand oils, making their oil the best in
the agricultural market, never failing to
provide superior protection.
Some critics argue that these extra
additives make John Deere oil more
expensive. However, whilst it is more
expensive to purchase initially (because
of higher quality additives) it is able to
protect much longer than any other oil on
the market, allowing customers to benefit
from extending service intervals and
therefore cheaper maintenance in the
long run. Because John Deere lubricants
are capable of such long lifespans without
oxidising, it is able to protect your machines
250 hours longer than any other oil on the
market, making John Deere oil in fact LESS
expensive, not more expensive to use.
All oils in the market are subject to minimum
testing programmes, however John Deere
does not do the bare minimums when
it comes to protecting your machinery.
Instead, John Deere thoroughly trial their oil
by developing their own tests & standards
that no other oil on the market has managed
to pass. One of these tests is the most
severe off road test available, the JDQ78X, where oil is run for 500 hours straight,
with no rest or additional oil added to the
machine. After 500 hours the oil is then
removed and its viscosity analysed.
Viscosity the most important feature of
oil, when the viscosity changes the ability
to protect the machine it sits within is
jeopardised. The oils viscosity begins to
change from the moment it is exposed to
oxygen. Preventing oxidation is essential
as the more the lubricant is oxidised, the
thicker its viscosity becomes, and the less
it protects your engine. The JDQ-78X is the
most extensive test available to date and
John Deere oil is the only oil on the market
that manages to pass such an intensive and
demanding process. This is a testament to
John Deere products built to last the test
of time. During this process the viscosity of
John Deere did not change, still running at
the same viscosity as when it first entered
the engine, guaranteeing that John Deere
oil will always protect your machinery.
Southland Farm Machinery customers can
now take advantage of John Deere oils
long life span, with our service departments
now offering optional, extended service
intervals on your machinery.
John Deere is so confident in its product
that it offers an exclusive 500 hour Engine
protection warranty on its John Deere Plus
50 II engine oil. By using John Deere Plus
50II engine oil and John Deere genuine
oil filters, John Deere guarantees that
your engine is covered from engine oil
related failure. Speak to your local service
manager today to find out more.
John Deere oil and Lubricants are
designed and built with one main goal in
mind, to provide superior protection of
your John Deere machinery, and after
175 years John Deere knows a thing or
two about quality products.
Why would you want anything else
protecting your machinery?
