Finer and teachers spoke with children about how to avoid fires and asked them to ensure that there are smoke detectors in their homes with batteries changed annually. Discussion centered around what has to happen in case of a fire. If you are in a burning building, get out. Go to a designated meeting spot and wait for help to arrive. Call 911 to seek help, and be prepared to tell the dispatcher your address. Parents - if your child does not know his/her address, please make teaching this information a priority. With the use of cell phones today, the dispatcher will need this information. We thank Steve Finer and the Killington Fire and Rescue for educating students about fire prevention. Spelling Bee You could hear a pin drop as selected students from Windsor Central Supervisory Union (WCSU) gathered together for their annual WCSU Spelling Bee at Woodstock Union High School's (WUHS) Teagle Library on Friday, October 10th. Words such as depth and lieutenant were among the many students faced while participating in the bee. Many thanks to everyone at WUHS/MS for graciously hosting this event providing an opportunity for our union elementary school students to gather together for healthy competition, especially, Dana Peterson, WUMS Principal and Spelling Bee Proctor; and the judge, Garon Smail, WUHS Principal. Killington Elementary sixth grader, Wilbur Abrams, and fifth graders Taylor Blodorn, Evan Joaquin, Alex Martell, Maria Sell, and their teacher and coach, Allison Naugle, represented Killington Elementary School well. They congratulate Woodstock Elementary School on their first place finish. Rotarians Donate Dictionaries Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Killingon/Pico Rotarians for donating beautiful, new dictionaries to each child in our third grade. Besides containing words and definitions, children learned very quickly that the dictionaries contain a wealth of other important information: countries, flags, U.S. presidents, and much more. Our students love their new dictionaries! A special thank you goes out to Maureen Principe and Debbie Burke for delivering the dictionaries to our students and sharing in their excitement. Loren M. Pepe, Principal ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------How Can I Help My Child Be Successful in the Classroom by Allison Naugle While surfing the internet for teaching tips and classroom ideas, I came across a short list of tips on how parents can help their child or children be successful at school. This list is credited to a fellow teacher, Olivia Spence: 1. Read EVERYDAY! You can read to your child or have your child read to you. Either way, READ! 2. Create a consistent after school routine. Support your child's study habits and the completion of his or her homework. 3. Be POSITIVE! Always speak positively about school, learning, and your child's teacher. 4. Encourage! Give your child the opportunity to excel in all areas of his or her academics. 5. Be sure that your child is getting plenty of rest each night and is ready for school each day. 6. Teach your child to be responsible for his actions and take pride in all he or she does. 7. Stay INVOLVED! Make it a point to ask your child about his or her school day. 8. Communicate! Please know that you can contact the classroom teacher with your questions and concerns. Thank you for working as a team with teachers to make sure your child's year is a successful one here at KES. P@K = Preschool at Killington Elementary School by Betty Hughes, Director The first month of Preschool has been fun, busy, and productive. This group of young students has been working on the alphabet, numbers, many creative projects, painting (one of the favorites), and they were scientists one day exploring the outside world of bugs. There are lots of great themes planned for the school year and Megan and I look forward to watching preschoolers grow and develop as we move forward with lots of learning!
