Premier Match Report
Karori Park No. 1. 5th April 2014
Waterside Karori 2 - 2 Island Bay
(C Ramsay (2))
-
(P Muollo , C Hilbron)
In perfect conditions for the season opener, Waterside Karori hosted
Island Bay United at Karori Park.
Karori started strongly with early pressure resulting in an easy tap in to
new Karori striker Connor Ramsay. Island Bay, however, remained
composed and played possession football from the back and scored
twice before the half-time break, both goals resulting from breaks
down opposite flanks.
Karori came out the more energized side in the 2nd half with continual
assaults down the flanks, one of which resulted in Conor Ramsay scoring an brilliant 2nd goal with a curling strike from well outside the box
into the top right corner – a good return for the Rooney-like striker.
More Karori pressure resulted in a free kick on the left, outside the
box. Ramsay whipped over a great cross which was nodded in from 8
yards by Ethan Cain, only to be controversially called offside.
Island Bay threatened a couple of times towards the 90 minute mark
with Karori keeper, Keiran Spargo, called on to make a couple of excellent stops.
So, a 2-2 draw at Karori Park. A result which probably neither side
were completely happy with.

FOOTBALL HEADLINES
Champion's League:
Manchester United's hopes of redeeming a poor season with a surprise Champions League
semi-final place were ended as holders Bayern Munich fought back to record a dominant second-leg win. Atletico Madrid knocked Spanish rivals Barcelona out as Koke's early goal gave
them a 2-1 aggregate win over the Catalan giants. Demba Ba's scrambled late goal sent Chelsea into the semi-finals at Paris St-Germain's expense - and sparked a familiar touchline celebration from delighted Blues boss Jose Mourinho. Real Madrid held off a determined fightback
by Borussia Dortmund to also secure a place in the semi-finals. The semi-final draw happens
soon!
Premier League:
Tottenham produced a superb performance (5-1) to increase the pressure on Sunderland. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers thinks there is more pressure on Manchester City as the two
Premier League title rivals prepare to meet next weekend. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits
his side's resident status in the Champions League is under threat after a 3-0 defeat at fifthplaced Everton. Former Norwich City boss Chris Hughton believes he would have kept the club
up this season had he not been sacked. Manchester United manager David Moyes says his
transfer targets will not be affected by the prospect of no Champions League football next season.
West Ham United are on the brink of offering Winston Reid a contract extension to keep the All
Whites captain away from the clutches of top English premier league clubs.
International:
Andrew Durante says the timing is not ideal but both he and Jeremy Brockie have put their
hands up for All Whites duty next month.
Ireland will take on England in a friendly in June 2015, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI)
said on Tuesday (local time), the first meeting between the teams in Dublin since a 1995
friendly was abandoned due to crowd trouble.
Mark it in your diaries; The World Cup is only 66 days away, with the opening match between
host nation Brazil and Croatia taking place in Sao Paulo on 12 June. (Ed. Bruce Duncan’s going
by the way!)
Wellington Masters Division 1:
Waterside Karori Dreamers made a solid start to the season with a 2-2 draw against Wellington
Olympic. Team Management was disappointed with itself after receiving the team’s first yellow card of the season without stepping foot on the pitch, “discipline” was hurriedly added to
the Dreamer’s manifesto as a key word for the team this season. They sit mid-table after the
round’s first game.
ABOUT THE CLUB
We are Wellington's largest football club. Our Junior and Senior clubs cater for
players (men and women) of all ages and ability from Nursery Grade (4 to 6
year olds) through to Masters' Grades (35 years and older) including Youth
teams and Women’s teams. Our main catchment area is the western suburbs
of Wellington, primarily Karori. The 2014 league season begins on Easter weekend and ends late August. The club currently has 15 men's teams, 2 women's
teams, U-17 youth and over 700 junior members.
Waterside Karori was formed from the merger of two famous Wellington soccer clubs - Karori Swifts and Waterside. The merger took place in 1987, forming
Waterside Karori AFC. The question of strip was easily decided - Waterside
played in black and white, as did most other sports codes in Karori, so those
colours became the new clubs strip. The first men’s team spent the first two
years in the National League.
