ON ELEMENTARY 2014-15 EMER ……….home of the little Yellow Jackets! August/ September Principal’s Message DAILY ROUTINE: Welcome to the 2014-15 school year! We look forward to a year of building new friendships and a year of learning at Emerson. I cannot help but share my personal wish for a mild winter and a dry school building to go along with it, too! Last year’s water problems have been addressed and necessary repairs have been nearly finalized. As a reminder, our motto at Emerson is On Time...On Task...On Target. We do expect the students to be in the front door on time (by 8:40), on task (working hard), and on target (meeting academic and social goals). It is obvious that we cannot do this without parent involvement. Together we can set high expectations so the children are prepared to meet the challenges of the Third Grade Guarantee and more importantly, prepared to be life-long learners and excellent citizens. While your children are at school, they will see some staff that are new to the Emerson building. We welcome Mrs. Angie Mentges (PE), Mrs. Sylvia Dorsey (art), Miss Kate Geissel (kindergarten), and Mrs. Lisa Honaker (second shift custodian). There have been some changes with third grade scheduling and with our specials in the building. Please read the newsletter for details. We look forward to each parent’s direct involvement with their child’s education by reviewing school work daily, attending P-T conferences, and being involved in the school community. Best wishes for a great year! Students may also bring a lunch from home; however, soft drinks and candy should not be included in that lunch. Milk can be purchased at the school. Each student is expected to eat something for lunch. Cafeteria personnel will be available at the Open House allowing you to put money in your child’s account. Payment can also be made online (no charge for this service) at www.lunchprepay.com. For eligible families, the free and/or reduced forms are available from the office during summer office hours, Open House, or on the first day of school. This may also be completed online at the website of www.lunchapplication.com. Families that were eligible in the Sidney City Schools will remain eligible through September 20. All new paperwork must be filed before this date. Breakfast is available each day from 8:10-8:35. Cafeteria prices are as follows: breakfast ($1), lunch ($2.35), and extra milk ($.50). Breakfast is free to all on the free/reduced price plan. The reduced lunch price is $.40. Each child will be given a POS (point of sale) identification number that they type in when receiving their breakfast or lunch. Once a student has charged three times he/she will be served a peanut butter sandwich until the account is paid in full. Thank you in advance for keeping the student account up to date. Parent-Advisory Committee PTO “Let’s Talk School” Your Emerson PTO purchased new playground equipment over the summer and plans to fund a COSI on Wheels event in October. PTO supports your child’s education each year by providing supplies, technology, equipment and special events for the students. Many thanks to the PTO! As an Emerson parent, please join us for our first meeting of the school year on Monday, September 8 at 6:30 in Library! Research has shown the more parental participation a school receives, the greater the student success. Please plan to attend one or more of our monthly meetings this school year! Specials The Emerson specials (art, music, PE) will operate on a three day rotation and not on a set day this school year. Please be sure your child is wearing proper shoes suitable for PE classes on the correct days. Refer to information shared at open house and the first lunch menu to understand the ABC specials rotation. Parents of Emerson students are invited to participate in a committee to “talk school.” The goal is to have representation from each grade level. The plan is to meet 2-3 times during the school year with an agenda that includes the “principal’s topic” while inviting parents to add topics of interest. Please contact the principal for more information and/or to express your interest. Attention Third Grade Parents ! To better prepare for the academic goals of the curriculum and to better align teachers and staff to help our students succeed, the Emerson third grade will be departmentalized. This means the students in third grade will have all three third grade classroom teachers. Please supply your children with wooden pencils as the overuse of foil-wrapped pencils harm our pencil sharpeners.
