POWERING PODIUM PERFORMANCES
Message from the Chairperson
The Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan (CSCS), as part of the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI) network, strives to provide a world class training
environment for Saskatchewan athletes. With the support of our partners, we deliver leading sport science and medicine, coaching education
and life services to support Canada’s high performance athletes to achieve Olympic and Paralympic podium performances.
This year our athletes and coaches made us proud at the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, capturing four gold and
one bronze medal at the Olympics and one gold and one bronze medal at the Paralympics. Saskatchewan sent a total of 16 athletes and three
coaches to the Olympic Games and four athletes and three coaches to the Paralympic Games. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches for
their success at the Games. You are an inspiration to us all!
CSCS athletes and coaches benefit from the support of partners and sponsors, who help ensure the viability and success of CSCS’s programs
and services every year. These organizations include: Sask Sport Inc., Sport Canada, Own the Podium (OTP), the Canadian Olympic Committee
(COC), Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), the Province of Saskatchewan, Coaches Association of
Saskatchewan (CAS), Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan (SMSCS), and Pfizer
Consumer Healthcare Inc.
Finally, I would like to thank the CSCS Management Committee, Athlete Advisory
Committee and all of our staff for their efforts in making the year a success.
Your dedication and hard work has ensured that our province’s high
performance athletes and coaches are better prepared to achieve their
athletic and personal goals and dreams.

Athlete Services
In 2013-14, the CSCS had 233 registered
athletes under the Podium, Canadian
Elite, Canadian Development, or Provincial
Development levels. The CSCS is designed to
support athlete training and development,
with the goal of helping athletes successfully
transition to and integrate with national
team programs. Registered athletes benefit
from an Athlete Services curriculum to help
them achieve personal and athletic success
through holistic programming. The CSCS and
our network partners work to ensure that
carded athletes have access to a uniform level
of life services across Canada.
Performance Services
Performance services (Sport Science and
Sport Medicine) are provided by the Sport
Medicine & Science Council of Saskatchewan
(SMSCS). All registered CSCS athletes, coaches
and Provincial Sport Governing Bodies have
access to these high quality services that are
delivered by Integrated Service Teams, staff
personnel or an individual service provider.
The services are tailored to meet the needs
of each Provincial Sport Governing Body and
National Sport Organization.
The SMSCS have a network of service
providers located throughout Saskatchewan.
This ensures that performance services are
available to all athletes, coaches and targeted
sports throughout the province and provided
in a cost-effective manner.
for sports targeted through by Own the
Podium. Physiology, sport psychology, sport
nutrition, biomechanics and performance
analysis, mental training, and strength and
conditioning were among the sport science
services utilized by the athletes and targeted
sports.
Two SMSCS Consultants – Bruce Craven and
Heather Hynes – were named Leads (for Sport
Medicine and Nutrition, respectively) on the
National Sport Science, Medical Advisory
Council (NSSMAC). The NSSMAC helps
integrate and lead the coordination of sport
medicine and science fields across Canada.
Thank you to Bruce and Heather for taking
these important leadership roles!
Sport Medicine
The SMSCS provided 122 hours to
centre-level targeted sports, 400 hours of
individual athlete support, and 73 hours
of provincial-level sport medicine support.
A Paralympic Integrated Service Team
initiative provided Paralympic athletes with
targeted sport medicine services. Athletes
received additional medical coverage
to supplement their primary insurance
programs and gained access to physicians,
specialists, orthotics, physiotherapy, athletic
therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and
massage therapy treatments.
Life Services
Sport Science
Over 800 hours of sport services (including
more than 130 hours of support for sports
targeted by the Own the Podium program),
500 hours of individual athlete services,
and 500 hours of centre-level support
for targeted sports were provided by the
SMSCS. Integrated Service Teams are in place
In 2013-14 the CSCS hosted its 5th Athlete
and Coach Advance featuring Olympians
Perdita Felicien, Kelsie Hendry, Christine
Nordhagen and other former and current
national team athletes. Over 60 participants
attended and were presented valuable
information on the importance of competing
ethically, the power of a positive attitude,
and strengthening communication between
an athlete and coach. The new “Ted Talks”
format contributed to the very positive
reviews and participants providing feedback
and input into future educational sessions.
CSCS Life Services are designed to
provide athletes with a variety of personal
development and skills training, as well as
tutoring, media relations, job placement
services, interview skills and other supports
to help them achieve success both in and
outside of sport.

Through the Speakers Bureau, community
presentations were provided by high
performance athletes. This outreach program
is designed to raise awareness about the
athletes and the benefits of sport.
Athletes and coaches are able to learn
another language through a partnership
with Rosetta Stone Language Training,
with 11 athletes accessing this service this
past year.
The Athlete Advisory Council (AAC) provides
input to CSCS programs and services. Two
members also sit on the CSCS Management
Committee.
Improving the Daily Training
Environment
Integrated Service Teams create and monitor
an athlete’s training and recovery program.
This year, in cooperation with the CPC,
para-sport training groups were developed in
Saskatoon and Regina. This initiative enabled
individuals with varied levels of ability to train
together in an environment supported by
SMSCS. These services, when combined with
consistent facility access, improve the athlete’s
daily training environment.
GymFit partnerships ensures that high
performance athletes and coaches have access
to fitness facilities in Saskatchewan’s major
centres. Partner facilities in Regina, Saskatoon
and Moose Jaw were at the University of
Regina Fitness and Lifestyle Centre, Level
10 Fitness, LG Fitness, YMCA, University of
Saskatchewan Fitness Centre, P.A.C.E. Athletic
Training Centre, YWCA, CBI Fitness Centre,
Craven Sport Services and Moksha Yoga.
Athlete Assistance Funding
A total of 36 athletes received
Saskatchewan Program for Athletic
Excellence (SPAE) and 109 athletes
obtained Future Best financial support in
2013-14.
Both programs are designed to help high
performance athletes cover costs such as
competitions and training camps, sporting
equipment, high performance training
facilities, coaches and sport science and
medicine servicers, post-secondary studies,
and general living expenses. Only carded
athletes with Sport Canada’s Athlete
Assistance Program are eligible for SPAE
funding, while Future Best grants are
available to non-carded athletes identified
by both the Provincial and National Sport
Organization as being potential candidates
for obtaining future National Senior
Team status.

Coach Services
Through the Coaching Services program,
CSCS coaches gained access to professional
development and mentorship opportunities,
formal education training sessions, and a
strong employment environment. This allows
them, in turn, to provide high quality coaching
opportunities to the province’s top athletes, so
they can excel in their respective sports at the
provincial, national and international levels.
Coach Education
The Advanced Coaching Diploma Program
Saskatchewan (ACD-SK) offers educational
programs for coaches that can prepare
athletes to reach the podium at provincial
and/or national events. All high performance
National Coaching Certification Programs
(NCCP) are led by qualified content specialists
and facilitators. In 2013-14, 12 coaches
participated in the NCCP Advanced Coaching
Diploma, with several other coaches
working to meet the program’s entrance
requirements. Saskatchewan’s first graduate
of the ACD program is Dave Robertson of
Regina, who coaches the National Kayak
Developmental Team.
The Coaching Association of Canada
Advanced Coaching Diploma Women in
Coaching Scholarships help reduce barriers
preventing women from pursuing a coaching
career. The scholarships – which are available
to NCCP Competition Development certified
coaches – supports coaches to coach at major
competitions, attend coaching conferences
and seminars, consult with sport experts
and mentors and upgrade their NCCP
certifications. There were two scholarships
awarded this past year to Saskatchewan
residents (Tina Chernoff, Synchro, and Astrid
Baecker, Soccer).
Coach Professional Development
Coach Employment
The CSCS and Coaches Association of
Saskatchewan continued its partnership in
administering four professional development
grant programs for high performance
coaches (Coach Visitation, Apprentice Coach,
HP Coach PD Grant, Women in Coaching PD
Grant). In 2013-14, 30 Saskatchewan coaches
were supported to upgrade their coaching
skills, enhance their NCCP training and
certification, and to participate in mentorship
opportunities. In addition, planning took
place to build a high performance stream
into the Saskatchewan Coaches Conference.
Thanks to the High Performance Coach
Capacity Grant, 22 Olympic and Paralympic
sports received financial support to hire 32
high performance coaches. This program
helps the CSCS to achieve its goal of
preparing Saskatchewan athletes and
coaches for national level competitions and
podium successes.
The CSCS also held quarterly Professional
Development and Networking Workshops
across the province that were well attended
and featured high profile guest speakers
such as two-time Olympic athlete Perdita
Felicien; former Team Canada volleyball
player Mark Dodds; Olympian Kelsie Hendry;
and CTV television host Mike Ciona. The
workshop topics included: “Media and the
Athlete/Coach”, “Concussions in Sport”,
“Injury Prevention”, “The Importance of a
Positive Attitude”, “Doping and Supplements”,
“Transition from High Performance Athlete
to Coach”, “Working With Athletes With
Diverse Abilities”, “Experience As A Team
Leader At the World University Games”, and
“Understanding Competition Within Teams”.

Business Operations
Service Delivery
Network & Communications
The CSCS renewed its service delivery
agreement with the Sport Medicine and
Science Council of Saskatchewan, ensuring
high performance athletes would continue
to receive high quality sport science and
medicine support. Service agreements were
also signed with sports receiving financial
support from the Own the Podium program.
In an effort to better coordinate our business
model, the Canadian Sport Institute
Network takes a pan-national approach
to the delivery of business operations.
The Network consists of seven locations:
Atlantic, Calgary, Manitoba, Ontario,
Pacific, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The
Network plays an essential role in providing
leadership and direction for Saskatchewan
and Canada’s high performance sport
system, standardizing services and best
practices through participation in national
sport committees and planning meetings
and offering evidence-backed support to
influence decision-making at the national
level.
To ensure that the network’s services
are meeting international standards, the
Canadian Sport Institute network partners,
review comparable high performance sport
centres and institutes’ best practices and
services.
Sask Sport Inc. manages the CSCS’s
operations, with the Regina and Saskatoon
offices located in their Administration
Centre Buildings. The CSCS Management
Committee, a sub-committee of Sask Sport’s
Board of Directors, is responsible for strategic
operational direction and evaluating the
successes of the CSCS.

CSI Network Communications developed
a style and graphics guide to ensure a
consistent style and form in all Canadian
Sport Institute Network communications and
to enhance the clarity and professionalism
of Network materials. Coordinated efforts
such as Sochi # WE CAN promoted Canada’s
Olympic & Paralympic hopefuls and built
interest and public support for Team Canada
leading into, during and post Sochi 2014.
# WE CAN aimed to communicate unity,
while personalizing each athlete’s mission.
Social media was key to promoting Sochi
Olympic and Paralympic athletes, coaches,
officials and volunteers.
The CSCS continued to promote its registered
athletes through local media and profiles
and event results posted on the website
www.csc-sask.ca and social media. Emphasis
was also placed on promoting those
receiving Future Best and SPAE funding
supports.
Communication materials – website, banners,
displays, and other printed materials –
developed by the CSCS were available in
both English and French. Athletes, coaches
and staff were also given access to translation
services for meetings, intake interviews,
conferences, and sport science and medicine
requests.
Through a partnership with Sask Sport Inc.,
Saskatchewan’s top athletes, coaches, officials
and volunteers were honoured through the
Saskatchewan Sport Awards. CSCS athletes
