W E BELIEVE that every victim of the Holocaust should be individually remembered.
W E HAVE AN OBLIGATION to memorialize their names and to tell their stories.
W E ARE INSCRIBING THE NAMES of more than 3,000 Jews from Bardejov and
its surrounding villages on the Memorial Wall to memorialize those who never returned.
W E ARE ENSURING that the Jewish community that once thrived in Bardejov will
be remembered by the future generations of both Jews and non-Jews so that the atrocities
of the Holocaust will never happen again.

The Memorial Book of Jewish Bardejov is planned as a special publication by the Bardejov
Jewish Preservation Committee to preserve and record Bardejov’s rich Jewish history for
the future generations of our children and grandchildren.
Through stories, maps, and archival images of Jewish life, the Memorial Book of Jewish
Bardejov will bring Bardejov’s Jewish history back to life.

Lidia Gold was born in Bardejov in 1930 and attended the local
school until the deportation. She spent the first years of the war
in hiding. She was caught by the Halinka Guard in 1944 and
was sent to Bergen Belzen, where she met Thomas Berger, a
native of Bratislava. They were liberated by the British Army in
1945, got married and immigrated to the Untied States in 1947.
Here they raised three children and ten grandchildren.

Your tribute can be in memory of loved ones, in honor of family or friends, or in
recognition of a special person or event. It will be a permanent part of the Memorial
Book of Jewish Bardejov.
By contributing to the fundraising campaign you will partner with us and help fund
the second phase of the Bardejov Holocaust Memorial adjacent to the historic Jewish
Suburbia. Your sponsorship supports our efforts to remember and honor the history
of the Jewish community of Bardejov for time immemorial.

After her retirement, Lidia found a new passion in art. She
studied at the New York Art School and had several exhibitions. One of her paintings decorates the entrance lobby of the
Holocaust Museum in Houston.
Thomas, who was a successful business man, retired in 2010.
Since then he has been volunteering in local schools, telling
his survival story and accompanying high school groups to the
March of the Living in Poland.
