A Wonderful Summer
Croatia Flute Academy, 6-13 July 2014
Thanks to the inspired vision and determination of Damjan Krajacic and superb organisational qualities of
Petar Curic, we saw the birth of an inspired new flute course in Karlovac, Croatia. We had such a mix of
personalities, disciplines and approaches represented during his week - it was a totally uplifting experience.
Thank you Boglarka Kiss, James Newton, Pierre-Yves Artaud, Damjan Krajacic and Robert Thies (piano)
for your huge playing, energy and wisdom. This was one of the best and most enjoyable flute courses I have
participated in. On a personal note, I took my first steps into Blues and Cuban improvisation in
Karlovac....and my 15 minute improvisation with Robert Thies was an experience never to be forgotten!

The 2014
family at
SIFSS!!
Every year I return to close friends, while making new ones...it is a real pilgrimage for me that allows me to
recharge my creativity ahead of the new season! Thank you Ruth Morley for your wonderful playing and classes
and for persevering and keeping such a thriving course alive for so many years. Ian Clarke is a revelation each
year and has become a friend, facilitated in large part by SIFSS. Scotty Mitchell’s collaborations on the piano
were monumental and subtle in equal measure, while Claire Haslin’s warmth and nurturing playing for many
students were very moving. Thanks to all the participants of all ages - your love, dedication and courage are
deeply inspiring and infectious.

Concert in Moss, Norway, 21 August 2014
Between
pieces with
the wonderful
pianist Trond
Schau
I was thrilled with the results of a new musical collaboration with pianist Trond Schau - the first of many, I
hope. We gave a recital at the charming Summer Festival of Moss headed by Tor Sørby, whose love of Claudio
Abbado took us both back to so many precious memories of a great man. The Arena where we played had a
great acoustic and intimate atmosphere. Trond and I played Ian Clarke’s “Orange Dawn”, followed by Houtaf
Khoury’s haunting “Après Un Rêve”. Principal cellist of the Oslo Radio Orchestra, Audun Sandvik, followed
with a Beethoven Sonata and we all combined in the famous Mendelssohn Trio Op. 49.
