Apollo Duo [email protected] www.ApolloDuo.com W The Apollo Duo is a flute and percussion duo based in Chicago and Minneapolis. The duo formed in 2011 when flutist, Stefanie Abderhalden, and percussionist, Jeremy Johnston, were graduate students at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. The duo began with a performance of music for fife and drum and since then, has performed a variety of music for flute and percussion at various venues throughout the Midwest. The Apollo Duo strives to perform many styles of music for flute and percussion. The duo promotes playing new music and works to commission new, innovative pieces written for their combination. EV IE In the fall of 2013, the Apollo Duo completed a tour at locations throughout Illinois and Minnesota. The duo performed a variety of works by composers such as J.S. Bach, David Maki, Nathan Daughtrey, Astor Piazzolla, Gareth Farr, and Ricardo Lorenz. The duo premiered their first commissioned piece titled “Poltergeist” by composer Patrick M. O’Shea on this tour. PR The Apollo Duo has commissioned new works for flute and percussion from composers Jason Cress, Nathan Daughtrey, and Danielle Fisher. The premiere performances of these pieces will be in September of 2014 in a substantial tour through Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. Following the completion of this tour, the Apollo Duo will record their debut album. Stefanie Abderhalden is a flutist and private lesson instructor living in Downers Grove, Illinois. A versatile flutist, Stefanie performs a variety of solo, chamber, and ensemble repertoire throughout the Chicago and Midwest area. She maintains an active music studio with students of all ages and levels. As a performer Stefanie can be heard regularly in solo recitals, as a member of the Fox Valley Orchestra flute section, and with her flute and percussion ensemble, the Apollo Duo. Stefanie also has performed with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Heartland Festival Orchestra, Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra, Wheaton Municipal Band, and the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides performing, Stefanie is a private music instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience. She currently teaches flute and piano privately out of her home studio as well as at Quinlan and Fabish Music Company in Burr Ridge, Illinois and in the Plainfield, Illinois public school district. Stefanie frequently judges IHSA solo and ensemble contests and has assisted at numerous flute and band camps throughout Illinois. In addition to her performing schedule and teaching commitments, Stefanie is a board member for the Chicago Flute Club. As a board member she chairs the masterclass and annual student competition committees. She is also a member of the National Flute Association. IE W Stefanie attended Illinois State University receiving a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in flute performance. Her primary teacher was Kimberly McCoul Risinger. EV Jeremy Johnston is an active and versatile performer and educator of percussion. As a performer, he is comfortable performing numerous styles of music in several types of ensembles including orchestral, chamber, and solo performances. Johnston has performed with several orchestras, including performing Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with the Joffrey Ballet in 2013. PR As a soloist, Johnston has performed several recitals with music ranging from Bach transcriptions for marimba to the mathematical compositions of Iannis Xenakis. Johnston has been featured as the marimba soloist with the University of Minnesota Percussion Ensemble performing Nebojša Jovan Živković’s Uneven Souls and Nathan Daughtrey’s Halcyon Days. In addition to his passion for performing, Johnston enjoys teaches a private studio of students. Johnston is the coach for the Symphony Series orchestra of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies (GTCYS). He is the instructor for the Percussion Methods course at the University of Minnesota, and directed the University of Minnesota Steel Drum Ensemble. Johnston taught the Percussion Techniques course and served as an assistant director of the Illinois State University Percussion Ensemble while at Illinois State University. He also coached the front ensemble in the Normal Community High School Marching Band. Johnston earned his B.A. from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, his M.M. from Illinois State University, and is currently pursuing his D.M.A. from the University of Minnesota. His percussion instructors have included Jim Knutson, Rich MacDonald, Tom Marko, Ben Stiers, David Collier, and Fernando Meza. He is a proud member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity of America and the Percussive Arts Society. He currently lives in Saint Paul, MN with his wife, Samantha, and two cats, Carmina and Scheherazade. W This is the sixteenth program of the 2014-2015 concert season for the University of Tennessee School of Music.
