MAGIC…THRILLS…AND MORE!
This Motzei Shabbat, January 31st, at 8:00pm, the YINW will be hosting its annual winter
event! Our opening act is a man who needs no introduction, magician Francis Menotti. But
we are just getting warmed up. Our headliner is none other than David Darwin aka The One
Man Sideshow. Yu may remember him from America’s Got Talent! That’s right! We pulled
out all the stops! All this for just $54 per person which includes a lavish dairy buffet, a splitting
of the pot and raffle prizes. All proceeds go to benefit the YINW. Please RSVP to Mordechai
Gampel at [email protected] and let him know you are in!
Condolences
We regret to inform you of the passing of Senya Mazur, Sender ben Dovid, a”h, beloved
father of our dear member, Inna Kern. May the family be comforted among the mourners
of Zion and Yerushalayim.
Watching My Carobs
This Wednesday is Tu B’Shvat. Don’t forget to wish a tree a happy new year!
Shabbat Kiddush
Kiddush sponsored by the Shul in honor of Tu Beshvat and to welcome back all those who
were away for yeshiva break. Kiddush features the award winning Tzala Lebovich cholent to
combat the chill of winter.
An Incredible Shabbat for an Incredible Soul—Phillip Bach, a”h
In commemoration of the first yahrzeit for Philip Bach, Feivish Shmuel ben Dovid, a”h, a
special Shabbat in Philip’s memory will take place on February 21st. The Shabbat will
culminate with a keynote address at 8:30pm, Saturday night at the shul by Chava Willig Levy.
An award-winning author, powerful advocate and renowned motivational speaker, Chava
Willig Levy is famous for her humor, passion and compassion. As a person who gets
around in a motorized wheelchair, she has shattered many stereotypes about people with
disabilities, be they in the workplace, in the community, in the classroom or on the college
campus. Her memoir, A Life Not with Standing (JDAM 2015), will be available for purchase
at the event at a specially discounted cost of just $20, and 10% of the proceeds will go to
the FDNow Foundation in Phillip, a”h’s, memory. Thank you to the following families for
donating to this event: Dublinsky, Gampel, Hiller, Hilsenrath, Levy, Libkind and Septimus. If
you would like to participate in this special Shabbat, please see Harry Dublinsky or email
him at [email protected].
Round of a Plows
Thank you to Yehudah Samet and Neil Kupferman, who once again put the shul on their
backs and for digging us out.
Asher Koach
We’re happy to report that our beloved Asher Horowitz is, b’H, doing better. He is still in
need of our tefillot, and people are asked to continue to have him in mind (Yehoshua Asher
ben Bayla Rivka), but there is another way the community can help. If anyone is available for
a short occasional stint of babysitting during afternoon nap-time, it would be of tremendous
help to Bayla. To inquire about the chesed or offer your help, please contact Bayla directly at
[email protected] or 917.589.4045.

Shiur for the Parents, Movie for the Kids
There will be a shiur for men and women @ 7:15pm on Motzei Shabbat, February 7th in
the main sactuary featuring Dr. Yael Ziegler, a dynamic and expert lecturer on Tanach.
Concurrently, there will be a kids movie night at 7:00pm in the party room. FREE. Everyone
is encouraged to attend!
Continue the Unity
On Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm, February 8th, the mothers of ‘our three boys,’ Rachel
Fraenkel, Bat Galim Shaer and Iris Yifrach will be at The Ramaz Upper School (current site
of Kehilat Jeshurun under Rabbi Haskel Lookstein) at a large community-wide solidarity
event to Continue the Unity and love of Israel that the mothers and their three sons, Naftali,
z’l, Gilad, z’l and Eyal, z’l inspired across the globe. Hosted by KJ, the event is sponsored by
major synagogues across the city, with a prestigious Host Committee.
Rachel Fraenkel, Bat Galim Shaer and Iris Yifrach, touched the world with their grace,
strength and faith. During the three weeks that their sons, z’l, were missing, the Jewish
world was united in hope. The event promises to be the opportunity to re-ignite that
feeling of unity and hope in our community in the presence of these incredible women.

AROUND THE TOWN
Friday Night Chaburah
This week’s Friday Night Chaburah will be given by Gavri at the Butler home, 936 Glenridge
Avenue, at 8:30pm – note new time. The topic will be: Like a Boss: Practical Applications of
Baal Talin.
Israel Update – Top Ten Israel Hikes – Amram’s Pillars/
The Black Canyon
Continuing are latest countdown. Here’s number 7.
The start of the hike is off Highway 90; there is a clearly marked turn about 15 minutes
north of Eilat. You then drive on a bumpy dirt road for another 15 minutes before parking
your car (it’s not a loop, so you have to use two cars and shuttle between; the whole backand-forth process can take up to an hour, so build that into your total hiking time).
The hike itself is worth it, though. First, stop at Amram’s Pillars, two natural rock formations
at the end of a short canyon. The hike then proceeds up Mount Amir to its peak, where
you’ll be treated to some great views. As you descend, you’ll have two options: a mostly flat
route that goes along the Israel Trail, and another, more interesting walk through a canyon
filled with ancient copper mines and digging shafts.
At the end of either of the two routes, you will be close to the Black Canyon – if you’re not
short on time, don’t miss it. The canyon is filled with gray and sometimes black granite rock
formations, white limestone chalk, plus some narrow passageways, which are fun to climb
and slide through.
