An Incredible Shabbat for an Incredible Soul—Phillip Bach, a”h In commemoration of the first yahrzeit for Philip Bach, Feivish Shmuel ben Dovid, a”h, a special Shabbat in Philip’s memory will take place on February 21st. The Shabbat will culminate with a keynote address at 8:30pm, Saturday night at the shul by Chava Willig Levy. An award-winning author, powerful advocate and renowned motivational speaker, Chava Willig Levy is famous for her humor, passion and compassion. As a person who gets around in a motorized wheelchair, she has shattered many stereotypes about people with disabilities, be they in the workplace, in the community, in the classroom or on the college campus. Her memoir, A Life Not with Standing (JDAM 2015), will be available for purchase at the event at a specially discounted cost of just $20, and 10% of the proceeds will go to the FDNow Foundation in Phillip, a”h’s, memory. Hosted by KJ, the event is sponsored by major synagogues across the city, with a prestigious Host Committee. Rachel Fraenkel, Bat Galim Shaer and Iris Yifrach, touched the world with their grace, strength and faith. January 31, 2015 Parshat Beshalach AROUND THE TOWN Friday Night Chaburah This week’s Friday Night Chaburah will be given by Gavri at the Butler home, 936 Glenridge Avenue, at 8:30pm – note new time. The topic will be: Like a Boss: Practical Applications of Baal Talin. Israel Update – Top Ten Israel Hikes – Amram’s Pillars/ The Black Canyon Continuing are latest countdown. Here’s number 7. The start of the hike is off Highway 90; there is a clearly marked turn about 15 minutes north of Eilat. You then drive on a bumpy dirt road for another 15 minutes before parking your car (it’s not a loop, so you have to use two cars and shuttle between; the whole backand-forth process can take up to an hour, so build that into your total hiking time). The hike itself is worth it, though. First, stop at Amram’s Pillars, two natural rock formations at the end of a short canyon. The hike then proceeds up Mount Amir to its peak, where you’ll be treated to some great views. As you descend, you’ll have two options: a mostly flat route that goes along the Israel Trail, and another, more interesting walk through a canyon filled with ancient copper mines and digging shafts. At the end of either of the two routes, you will be close to the Black Canyon – if you’re not short on time, don’t miss it. The canyon is filled with gray and sometimes black granite rock formations, white limestone chalk, plus some narrow passageways, which are fun to climb and slide through.
