How to Figure Appliance Cost
To figure out the cost of operating an appliance not listed in this
brochure, follow this simple formula:
1. Multiply the wattage of the appliance by the monthly
hours of use.
2. Divide by 1,000.
3. Multiply the total by your price per kWh.
(We used an average of $O.18/kWh for this brochure).
Energy Efficiency Tips
• Turn the thermostat down at night, and when you'll be away
for more than three hours.
• Use the "Energy Saver" switch unless there is excess
moisture on the refrigerator.
•
Wh~n
you purchase a new refrigerator or freezer, retire the
old one. A new ENERGY STAR model should cost about
half as much to operate as the old one.
• Purchase appliances and electronics with the ENERGY
STAR label.
• A compact fluorescent bulb costs more to purchase, but can
save $40 to $50 over its life.
• By installing a new, energy-efficient showerhead, you can
use 50% less hot water and still have a comfortable shower.
• Use faucet aerators - the ones with an on/off lever save the
most energy.
• Use the no-heatlair-dry cycle or turn-off the dishwasher
during the drying cycle.
• Dry clothes in consecutive loads, while dryer is warm, and
keep the lint screen clean.
• ENERGY STAR washers can save up to 40% on energy
and 60% on water consumption.
• Waterbed heaters use a lot of energy. You can save up to
30% by keeping the bed covered with quilts and by
insulating the bottom and sides with 1/2 inch polystyrene
insulation.
• Many appliances such as TVs and cable converter boxes
use energy all the time. Unplug them when vacationing.
