FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. We are now preparing for semester exams
and getting ready for a new semester here at Lyman Elementary.
November was a busy month here at Lyman. PTO and the school held successful fundraisers to
help give back to our teachers and students at Lyman.
Coach Calhoun with “Move to Learn” came to visit our campus and encouraged students to
exercise their bodies in order to increase academic achievement. The Perk Players also came to
Lyman and put on a “Bucket Filling” performance to promote positive behavior.
primary piece of federal legislation dealing with the
education of children and youth in homeless situations.
In compliance with federal and state regulations, the
district and Lyman Elementary strive to meet the
educational needs of homeless students. Through the
McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, the district
and Lyman Elementary are able to provide homeless
students access to school and appropriate services
while reducing school transfers and enhancing
December promises for a lot of excitement as well. Our first school dance will be held this Friday,
December 5th from 6-8pm. The cost is $5.00 per student and concessions will be sold as well.
Students must have below 6 demerits and no bus discipline in order to attend. Santa’s Workshop
will be open all next week. The cost of all items will be $2.00 and students will have the
opportunity to purchase items for family and friends during their activity period all week long.
We appreciate your commitment to your child’s education.

The Harrison County School District has
purchased this program for all students in
grades K-8.
This is a web-based program that provides
individualized instruction based on the
results from the NWEA assessments that
your child takes three times a year.
We suggest that your child work in this
program for at least 15 minutes each night.

MOVE TO LEARN VISITS LYMAN ELEMENTARY!
Coach Calhoun made a visit to Lyman Elementary and encouraged students to exercise their bodies and their
minds in order to boost their achievement. All grades attended and participated in various “Move to Learn”
videos and activities.
The Move to Learn videos feature Coach Calhoun leading students in simple movement exercises that can be
done in a small space. Teachers are noticing that incorporating the fitness breaks in the classroom has
increased their students’ ability to learn and to focus on schoolwork. The fitness breaks help teachers create positive learning
environments and promote effective classroom management.
These brief, organized, and free classroom movement breaks can help teachers manage their students’ energy levels so that after
a fitness break children’s brains are more focused and ready to learn or take a test. These breaks were developed by
Mississippians for Mississippi children. Research shows us that when we exercise our body we are also exercising our brain.
Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs!
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated
(http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm) each year, but good
health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often
can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like
the flu.
There also are flu antiviral drugs(http://www.cdc.gov/flu/antivirals/
whatyoushould.htm) that can be used to treat and prevent the flu.
1. Avoid close contact.
2. Stay home when you are sick.
3. Cover your mouth and nose.
4. Clean your hands.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially
when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress,
drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

YOUR HELP!
We have a designated car rider
drop off in front of the cafeteria
between 7:00-7:25am. We have
4 adults that will be on duty to
watch your child get out of the
car and walk to class. The front
parking should only be used if you
are later than 7:25am, walking
medication in to the nurse, or
need to see someone in the
office. We have students being
dropped off in front of the school
in the mornings. The front of the
school is extremely congested
with bus traffic, students walking
from the apartments, and regular
traffic. Please help us keep our
students safe and follow the
above guidelines.
