Biography
Maarten de Laat is a full professor of professional development in social networks
at Welten Institute, Research Centre for Learning, Teaching & Technology, the
Faculty of Psychology and Education, at the Open University of the Netherlands.
He is director of the Social and Networked Learning research programme. This
research is concentrated on exploring social learning strategies and networked
learning relationships that facilitate learning and professional development. Besides this
research group he supervises 8 PhD research projects. Maarten’s research is focused on the
tension between formal professional development initiatives and day-to-day informal learning
by professionals in open learning practices. His research addresses informal learning in the
workplace, lifelong learning, professional development and knowledge creation through
(online) social networks and communities and the impact technology, learning analytics and
social design has on the way these networks and communities work, learn and create value.
He has published and presented his research on networked learning and learning analytics
extensively in international research journals, books and conferences. He has given several
invited keynotes at international conferences. He has been appointed a visiting professor at
the University of South Australia in Adelaide. He is co-chair of the international Networked
Learning Conference (NLC) as well as co-chair of the minitrack Social Media & Learning at
HICSS (Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences). During the past two
editions of the HICSS conference (45 and 46) he was a co-chair of the Learning Analytics &
Networked Learning minitrack and he co-organized a workshop on Learning Analytics. He
has been a member of the steering committee of Learning Analytics Conference 2012 and he
recently co-organized a Discourse-Centric Learning Analytics workshop at LAK13. He is a
member of the steering committee of SoLAR (Society for Learning Analytics Research) and
he is an international member of the reference group for a Australian university research
consortium on learning analytics in education.
Maarten’s research programme at the Open Universiteit was responsible for about a third of
the 3.8 million core funding the centre received from the Dutch government. Besides this he
has acquired over the years over 3 million Euro’s of project funding, including the recent
NWO (Dutch Science Foundation) 4 year project on “New ways of working and human
capital development), European POERUP project on Open Educational Resources and their
communities of users; a two year research project on managing informal professional
development in communities and networks within formal organizations at SKOEM (a regional
school board in the Netherlands); and a research project on non and informal learning in
networks of school leaders for the VO Academy (Academy for professional development for
leadership and management in secondary education).
