Smile Train
Smile Train is a US based global charity devoted to just one cause: helping poor children born
with cleft lips and palates in developing countries. It works only with local doctors – helping them with funding, training, equipment and technical support.
This ‘model’ not just builds eventual self sufficiency instead of perpetuating dependence, it improves the treatment infrastructure in these cou ntries, raises
standards of medical practice, fosters a sense of ownership and pride – but is
also very cost effective. It is also one of the leanest of its kind – run and managed by just about 60 people worldwide, making The New York Times call it “….probably the
most productive charities – dollar for deed in the world”! Thanks to this approach Smile Train
has grown to become the world’s largest cleft charity having sponsored over 980,000 safe,
quality and totally free surgeries in 75+ countries since inception. Smile Train’s India programs
are the largest – accounting for almost 40% of the global surgeries. For more information
