She began her teaching career in Brooklyn, NY and then moved to Syracuse, where she has taught at MHR for the past 15 years. A native of Queens, NY, Mrs. Lerch earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communications from St. John’s University, received her teaching certification from Queens College and then finished her Master of Education degree at Le Moyne College. She enjoys reading, music, traveling and is the oldest of six. Mrs. Lerch lives in Camillus and has one son, Isaiah, who (she can’t believe) is in sixth grade at MHR. What do you love most about teaching? Mrs. Lerch loves it when kids learn something new. She finds it wonderful to be a part of and to witness when kids learn about someone or something they didn’t know about before. Second grade read a biography and watched videos about Rosa Parks life, including her childhood. The kids were so moved and interested and couldn’t believe they didn’t know all this until now. What do you wish other people knew about MHR? The school feels like you belong to a big family. Fun Fact: Mrs. Lerch once interned/ worked for the band U2’s management company. Mrs. Jean McLatchie Mrs. Jean McLatchie joined the MHR faculty in 2008 as a kindergarten teacher, and moved to third grade two years later. A graduate of SUNY Oswego, she has degrees Elementary Education and Reading. Mrs. McLatchie was the owner of Bumblebee Preschool in Lakeland for several years before returning to full-time teaching. She enjoys reading and gardening, and is active in her church community. Jean grew up in Ontario, NY, and now lives in Solvay with her husband and two daughters. What do you love most about teaching? Mrs. McLatchie loves getting to know the students. Each child’s personality is so unique; they are interesting and wonderful children of God. What do you wish other people knew about MHR? MHR is a wonderful community to belong to. People are always willing to reach out to others and so many volunteer to help. It is encouraging to see young families getting involved. Fun Fact: Mrs. McLatchie has six sisters and no brothers. Student Spotlight Fifth grade student Ronan Fortin has spent time volunteering this year at the Oxford Inn, an emergency shelter for men that is run by Catholic Charities of Onondaga County. Ronan’s work inspired the MHR 5th and 6th grade classes to focus service projects on helping the Oxford Inn. They collected toiletries and made sandwiches for the shelter. Thank you, Ronan, for your exemplery service to the community! Page 2 Sixty Seconds with a Sixth Grader: Isaiah Lerch What is your happiest memory at MHR?
