Three overlapping pillars to create sustainable growth
The social pillar of CSR is about being an excellent employer and promoter of responsible
gambling. The economic pillar is about practising economic sustainability for the benefit of
Mauritius and contributing to community prosperity. The environment pillar means
reducing our environmental impact and encouraging our service providers and employees
to do the same.
Social Pillar
The social pillar of corporate social responsibility is the way we demonstrate our values
within the community. An important part of being socially responsible is keeping our games
fun for all players and we do this by encouraging our players to make informed choices
around gaming. Players can learn about their odds of winning, payouts and how games work
at retailer’s locations and on our website (www.loterienationale.mu).
We also know that our staff and our retailers need to know all this information too so they
can have knowledgeable conversations with players. So, we invest in educating and training
these people on a regular basis.
Lottotech is committed to advertising and promoting our products responsibly by ensuring
that our messages are factual and do not oversell the wining experience. It is mandatory
that our retailers affix a sticker “Interdit aux moins de 18 ans” (prohibited for minors) close
to the terminal. Furthermore, all the communications and advertising feature a message
advising the public that our products are prohibited to minors.
Our security team also conducts regular audits to ensure retailers are complying with legal
requirements of not selling to minors
Lottotech is a member of the World Lottery Association (WLA), the global authority on lottery
businesses. As a member of the WLA, Lottotech’s duties are not only to grow revenue and returns to
good causes but also to facilitate responsible play. With that in mind, the WLA has adopted the
Responsible Gaming Principles and a Responsible Gaming Framework with the aim of protecting
lottery customers around the world. By adopting these principles, WLA members have “committed
their vigilance in making responsible gaming (RG) an integral part of their daily operations.” This
effort and commitment will ensure that the public is protected and revenues for the public good are
sustained.
In early 2014, Lottotech applied for a Level 2 WLA certification in April 2014, which is focused on
self-assessment and determining which RG programs need to be built to ensure the organisation
addresses all the Responsible Gaming Principles.
Our goal is to attain Level 3 WLA RG Certification by the end of 2014 which will show that we have
allocated sufficient resources to support the implementation of specific Responsible Gaming
programs, initiated the development of internal and external communications activities to inform
relevant stakeholders of our Responsible Gaming commitment and initiated the implementation of
engagement processes that support the development of a Responsible Gaming program.
To be a great place to work, Lottotech provides challenging and exciting opportunities and helps our
employees realise personal success and growth. We offer a number of resources for employees,
including benefits, training, skills management, and ongoing support for career development.
We also believe that Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives must go beyond donations. We aim to
involve staff in social and charitable activities that will benefit the community and ultimately
Mauritius as a country. Employees’ involvement in the company’s CSR activities will form an integral
part of Lottotech’s CSR philosophy as we will encourage our employees to be involved in the
activities and projects of the various NGOs that the company will support.
Economic Pillar
Lottotech was created to make a positive economic impact in Mauritius and we have succeeded in
this mission. Lottotech contributes significantly to the Consolidated Fund of the Government of
Mauritius. As per the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) Act, any money paid into the
Consolidated Fund is used to finance the implementation of projects relating to community
development, the promotion of education, health, sports and culture and for reimbursement of
public debt of the Government of Mauritius. Since the launch of the Mauritius National Lottery up
to 31 December 2013, Lottotech has contributed more than MUR 2,5 billion directly to the
Consolidated Fund. Lottotech also contributes to the National Solidarity Fund by handing over
unclaimed prizes. Over the same period, the Company has contributed more than MUR 175 million
to this fund, which is used to improve the lives of the most vulnerable Mauritian citizens.
Since the establishment of Lottotech, we have been enhancing the life of Mauritians by paying more
than MUR 6 billion to winners and changing the lives of more than 108 Loto Millionnaires. At the
same time contributing in creating direct and indirectly employment in the country with more than
MUR 637 million paid to retailers as commissions.
Our impact is also felt by the numerous businesses we engage with through our regular operations.
Our network of over 900 certified retailers benefits from increased store traffic to purchase our
products, and the commissions paid through such activities. Further to this, our suppliers benefit
from the products and services we purchase from them, which ultimately helps to promote job
creation in the region.
Environmental Pillar
Lottotech recognises its impact on the environment and aims to take all reasonable actions to
reduce this impact. Our commitment to protecting the environment is integral to our desire of
operating in a socially responsible and ethical manner, and achieving high standards of integrity.
The current environmental measures adopted by Lottotech are as follows:
·
·
Our tickets are made up of paper and ink and we always use 100% recyclable board,
Our instant and Loto tickets are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.
Our goal in 2014 is to properly measure and benchmark the impact of our products and business
operations on the environment. From this assessment, we will prioritize which actions we can take
to reduce our environmental impact. These initiatives will be measured and communicated to our
various stakeholders.
