Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology,
Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as Regional
Engineering College and was given the status of National
Institute of Technology, Jalandhar by the Government
under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource
Development, (Government of India), New Delhi on
October 17, 2002. As NITs, an Institute of National
Importance, the Institute has a responsibility of providing
high quality technical education in Engineering and
Technology to produce competent technical manpower for
the country. The institute offers B. Tech. programme in
twelve disciplines of Engineering and Technology along
with the Research programme leading to M. Tech. and Ph.
D. degree.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mining Engineering has been started
since 2013 with the present Director, Professor S. K. Das
as its Head of the Department. Professor Das served
Bharat Coking Coal Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India
Limited for five years in various capacities before joining
Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad as an Assistant
Professor where he worked for 12 years. In 1997, he
joined Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and
served in various capacities such as Associate Professor,
Professor and Head of the Department during the period
1997-2011.The course curriculum for the B. Tech. Degree
has been designed catering to the existing and emerging
needs of the industry.

railway route. Jalandhar is situated 150 kms from
Chandigarh and 60 kms from Ludhiana.
OBJECTIVES
Mining Engineering is an engineering discipline that
involves the practice, the theory, the science, the
technology, and application of extracting and processing
minerals from a naturally occurring environment. Mineral
extraction is essential to modern society. Mining activities
by their nature cause a disturbance of the environment in
and around which the minerals are located. Mining
engineers must therefore be concerned not only with the
production and processing of mineral commodities, but
also with the mitigation of damage to the environment as a
result of that production and processing. Mining engineers
are consulted for virtually every stage of a mining
operation. Mining engineers working in an established
mine work as an engineer for operations improvement,
further mineral exploration, and operation capitalization
by determining where in the mine to add equipment and
personnel. The engineer also works in supervision and
management, or as an equipment and mineral salesperson.
In addition to engineering and operations, the mining
engineer work as an environmental, health and safety
manager or design engineer. The objectives of this
symposium is to bridge the gap between the academia and
the industry and to update the knowledge and skills of the
technical teachers and mining engineers in the current and
emerging issues related to the mining industry.
