UNBC School of Social Work Master of Social Work Distance Course Availability There are two entry routes into the MSW at UNBC: 1. Entry from a BSW leads into the Advanced Year (or MSW Year) of the MSW Program. 2. Entry from a Bachelor degree in a related area and two years (24 months full-time equivalent) human service experience. Entry at this level begins with an MSW Foundation Year of studies, and then the MSW or Advanced Year is completed. ____________________________________________ MSW (Advanced) Year Distance Options This section describes which Advanced Year MSW courses are available in an on-line or another distance format and which are offered face to face. These courses may be taken from anywhere, as long as the student has internet and computer access. Please note that attendance is required in-person at the Prince George campus for at least 2, possibly more, courses. (See section below). For the MSW Advanced Year the required courses are: • SOCW 609-3: Advance Quantitative Research • available on-line • HHSC 703-3: Qualitative Research Approaches in Health and Human Sciences • available on-line • SOCW 704-3: MSW Integrative Seminar • face-to-face only One of the following is required and can be done at a distance (no classroom requirements), but must be arranged with your supervisor: • SOCW 700-12: Thesis • SOCW 732-9: Practicum II Semi-required - Students must take 2 of the following 4 courses (but can take more than 2 and count the others as electives): • SOCW 601-3: Issues in Northern/Remote SW • face to face only • SOCW 602-3: First Nations Advanced SW Practice • face to face only • SOCW 603-3: Women Policy/Practice Issues • face to face only • SOCW 605-3: Community Work/Politics of Change • available on-line Electives – only those available on-line or by distance means are listed here (Thesis route students take 2 electives; Practicum Route students take 3 electives): Required Courses One of the required courses is available on-line: • SOCW 635-3: SW Philosophy and Ethics • • Four of the required courses are available, face-to-face (only), every second year, at each of the 3 regional campuses. These courses include: • • SOCW 620-3: Policy Making – available on-line SOCW 604-3: Directed Readings – can be done at a distance, but must find an instructor to agree to work with you to develop this independent studies course. SOCW 701-3: Research Practicum – can be done at a distance with the approval of your supervisor Electives may also be taken from another university if they transfer back to UNBC. Other universities may have distance options for some of their electives. (See the Western Deans’ Agreement or check with UNBC before proceeding.) Face-to-Face Course Requirements Students are required to complete the following courses only available face-to-face in Prince George: • SOCW 704-3: MSW Integrative Seminar • One of the semi-required courses • Electives – if choosing an elective that is not one of the distance courses listed above Students will need to research if the semi-required courses can be taken elsewhere and transferred back to UNBC. __________________________________________ • • • • SOCW SOCW SOCW SOCW 630-3: Communication Skills 631-3: Critical SW Practice 633-3: Critical Social Policy 634-3: SW Research/Policy/Practice Note: As these courses are only available in the regions every second year, it is important to time an MSW application for the FY so that there is a match with regional delivery. Currently that means starting your FY courses in September of even numbered years (i.e. 2016 or 2018). Check with the MSW Coordinator or a regional faculty member before applying to be sure. The remaining required course is: • SOCW 637-3: Advanced Practice This course must be taken simultaneously with the MSW Practicum I (SOCW 632-9). Currently, this course is only available in Prince George, although it may be possible to arrange a video or audio delivery to a regional campus if a request is made early enough. This option is NOT guaranteed. The request should be made in the student’s MSW application in writing. Spring / Summer Condensed Electives MSW electives are sometimes offered in a one week condensed format in the spring/summer semester. Students will likely need to travel to the scheduled campus for the one week of classroom time. Students will need to prepare in advance by completing course readings and are expected to complete assignments due after the classroom time is completed – these components can be done from a distance site. __________________________________________ Foundation Year – Distance Options The Foundation Year (FY) can be largely completed at one of UNBC’s regional campuses (located in Fort St. John, Quesnel and Terrace) however, is not available as a fully distance option. In the Foundation Year students complete 8 courses (6 required and 2 electives) plus a practicum. Practicum It is possible (but not guaranteed) to complete the MSW Practicum I (Foundation Year) outside of Prince George. These factors must be in place: • agreement from the Field Education Director • agreement from the student’s supervisor • a suitable placement location which must include supervision from someone with an MSW degree Contact the Field Director and your supervisor early to discuss this option and how to proceed. Elective Courses FY MSW electives are the same as the electives for the Advanced Year. Please see the previous sections for which of these are available by distance or how the condensed one week delivery format functions. Courses available by distance are subject to change. Distance delivery is not guaranteed.
