IE Newsletter Feb 2014

Hi all,
Please excuse this rather plain newsletter while we sort out some IT
issues. Thanks for everyone’s input into this addition. We intend to put
out a newsletter once a month at this stage and then perhaps fortnightly
once veggie season comes around in April. If you have any questions or
feedback please email us or drop into Broome Community House. Until
next newsletter, happy growing, sharing and eating.
News
Lots of energy continues to be generated around creating, growing and
eating in Broome. With some fabulous project ideas floating around, we
have been busy connecting people and investigating possibilities for
development which you can read more about below.
In IEB news, our next 'Planting the Seed' Calendar event is
coming up on February 18th at Broome Community House. The
topic is 'Growing for Sharing' - come along to learn about
designing your growing space for producing excess, how to save
seeds, how to germinate seedlings, and how to harvest/prepare
excess produce for sharing/swapping. If you would like to attend,
please RSVP by 4.30pm on Monday 17th February to
[email protected] or call 9193 6425. Please note the
time has been changed to 7-9pm.
We are also getting some grant applications finalised which include items
for a mobile Tool Library that we can all borrow from. In addition, we
are excited to announce our logo competition – see below in ‘Projects
in the Pipeline’ for details.
In other news, Nyamba Buru Yawuru has an extremely exciting vacancy
for a Project Co-ordinator for their community garden space. The relevant
information is attached as a separate document. We wait with anticipation
to find out who will fill this fantastic position at NBY.
For your reading pleasure, please find attached some great articles about
green and edible things.

Projects in the Pipeline
To kick off the New Year, we are calling all creative types to
enter the Incredible Edible Broome Logo Competition. If you know
your 2B from your HB, or know about graphics and vectors then we
want you! Design a logo and either email
([email protected]), post (PO Box 1034, Broome
6725) or drop it off to CIRCLE house by the 1st of March. If your
logo gets chosen as the winner, you can expect Broome-wide fame,
a mention in the newsletter, and perhaps even a little green gift!
Andrew Coopes from Broome Scouts is keen to green the
Scouts Hall on Orr St. In a fantastic example of using limited space,
a ‘vine garden’ to climb along their fence-line is looking to be a
great option – think watermelon, rockmelon, pumpkin, passionfruit
etc. If you are interested in helping out, please email either
[email protected] or
[email protected]. We will organise a meet and greet
beforehand to discuss materials, seeds, layout etc.
We have approached a number of people/groups to see who is
willing and able to help make some planter boxes out of recycled
timber. The idea is to plant edibles in the boxes (on castor wheels)
and loan them to shops or cafes who would be responsible for
putting them out on the street each day and giving them a quick
water. If you are keen to lend a hand, email
[email protected]
Jenna Cowie is considering planting some edible bits and
pieces around the Woods Dve area to cover some spaces that have
been graffitied recently. If you live in this area (Reid Rd/final stages
of Six Seasons) and would be interested in some sort of greening
project, please email [email protected]
Babagurra Aboriginal Incorporated have introduced the
Juanita Gower Healing Gardens at 20 Clementson St, with
Indigenous food and medicine plants and an edible community food
garden space. It is open for all to use for growing your own food.
For more info, contact Pat Lowe on 0487 822 126 or drop donations
to 20 Clementson St.
The Kerr St. crew are meeting shortly to kick off their verge
gardening project. Contact Melanie Howard for more details on
[email protected]
The IEB steering committee is planning some fun activities for
our North West Expo community stall which has been generously
offered to us by the lovely ladies at the NWE office
The Recovery Centre on Saville St. has a great little garden
going, but it needs a little bit of love. If you are keen to get
involved in keeping this space alive (in exchange for its yummy
produce), contact Cameron North
([email protected]). If you happen to be part of an
agency and are interested in running a group in conjunction with
the garden, Cam would also love to hear from you.
Can you lend a hand?
The Juanita Gower Healing Gardens are seeking donations of
large plant pots, organic fertilisers, mulch, newspapers, food
containers for planting, vegetable and herb seeds, non-toxic
flowering plants, bush plants and bush medicines, gardening tools
or retic fittings… contact Pat Lowe on 0487 822 126 or drop
donations to 20 Clementson St.
As part of the IEB grant application to get the Tool Library up
and running, IEB are seeking donations of tools (shovels, secateurs,
rakes…) for use by people who have limited access to gardening
gear. If you have anything you would like to contribute, you can
drop it off to Melanie Howard at Captain Gregory’s Cottage (behind
Matso’s Brewery)
IEB have started collecting resources for the Resource Library
at Broome Community House (see attached for items we have for
loan). If you have any good quality gardening/flora books you
would be happy to donate, or if you have any suggestions of books
we could try to find, please contact Melanie Howard on
[email protected] or drop them off to Captain
Gregory’s Cottage.
There are several charities around town who are always happy to
take excess produce. If you are keen to know more, please
contact Jenna on [email protected]
The lovely Arina from Bidyadanga is hoping to invigorate some public
spaces in the Bidgy community. If you have any seeds, seedlings or pots
that you can donate, please contact her at [email protected]
