Welcome to the North London District of the Oddfellows. Members of the
District have organised an exciting and varied programme of events for you all.
This Events Diary is a handy guide for you to keep, so that you know what is
happening in your area. It will be published twice a year.
Degree Lodge
Everybody is welcome at Oddfellows events. Even if you are not a member, we
want to extend an invitation to you and your friends to attend any events that take
your fancy. All are welcome and we like to think we can guarantee you a good time.
The James Roe Provincial Lodge of Past Grands meets on 4 Thursdays a year
at 222 Camden Road, London NW1 9HG. The next meetings are on 4 December
2014 and 5 March 2015 at 7.30pm.

Oddfellows Advice Service
Provided in conjunction with the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), you can
phone one of our dedicated Oddfellows Advisors to obtain advice and
information on over 15,000 topics. Many local CAB offices are closing or are
only open on certain days and for short hours, but Oddfellow Advisors can
provide the information you want quickly. An Advisor will support you through
your problem from start to finish and of course, the information and your
details will remain confidential.

Saturday 11 October - The Royal Mews
Starts at 11am at Buckingham Palace Road, Victoria,
London SW1. The Royal Mews provides the carriages used
for Royal and State occasions. It is one of the finest working
stables, responsible for training the horses that pull the royal
carriages. The most dazzling is the Gold State Coach, used
at every coronation since that of George IV in 1821. Ticket
prices are Adults £7.85, Over 60/Student (with valid ID)
£7.15, Under 17s £4.58 and Under 5s go free. Pay on the day. The price includes
an audio guide. With an optional pub meal or drink to round off the afternoon. To

Afternoon Social Events
Harrow
Harrow Arts Centre and Library is next to the large Morrison’s supermarket at
Hatch End. Buses H12 and H14 stop outside and bus 182 nearby. The nearest
tube station is Harrow on the Hill (take H14 bus) and Hatch End train station is 5
minutes’ walk away. Harrow Arts Centre allows free car parking.
Enfield
The Parish Centre is behind Enfield Market and less than two minutes’ walk away
from Enfield Town train station and less than 10 minutes’ walk from Enfield Chase
train station. Buses W8 and W9 stop directly outside the Centre and buses 121, 191,
192, 231, 307, 313, 317, 329, 377 and 629 stop less than two minutes’ walk away.
Euston
The Duchess of Kent Lodge in Euston is hosting afternoon social events on 4
November and 10 February. Full details are shown in the listings.

End, Harrow HA5 4EA. Henry Lewis is the Hon Vice President of The Magic
Circle and a Gold Star Medallist performer. Henry - the Man with YOU in his Mind
- will teach you some memory techniques. Hear too a short presentation on the
dangers of flu and how to prevent the disease. There will be a £2 charge for the
entertainment and refreshments are free.

October - SS ROBIN
Millennium Mills Pier, Royal Victoria Dock,
Newham, London. Recalling Masefield’s poem
‘Cargoes’, Robin is the last surviving ‘dirty British coaster’. Robin is one of three
ships in London in the Core Collection of the National Historic Ships Register (the
nautical equivalent of a Grade 1 Listed Building), the others being Cutty Sark and
HMS Belfast. We are privileged to have a unique and exclusive opportunity of a
‘behind the scenes’ guided tour of the vessel, while it is being refurbished, before it
opens to the public in 2015, 125 years after its launch. The event is free, although
you may wish to donate to the Charity SS Robin. Bacon or vegetarian rolls and
drinks will be bought in for a small charge to members. Time slots are 10.30am,

Thursday 16 October - I Enfield talking Newspaper plus II the London Beer
Flood and III Flu Prevention
Starts at 2pm to 4pm at St Andrew’s Parish Centre, 36 Silver Street, Enfield EN1 3EG
For 50 years Enfield Talking Newspaper has provided blind and visually impaired
people in Enfield with a free weekly tape. Editor Phillip Dawson of ETN will
raise our awareness of the service. After the free refreshments, Paul Fitton’s
presentation tells the story of the London Beer Flood, which caused havoc and
death 200 years ago today. Hear too a short presentation on the dangers of flu
and how to prevent the disease. A £1 raffle will be held.

Thursday 23 October - Oddfellows Stroll: Finsbury Park to Highbury
and Islington
Starts at 11am at Finsbury Park station (Victoria and Piccadilly lines and Capital
Connect). On the 4 mile walk, we will go into Finsbury Park, follow the ‘New River’
(not a river and certainly not new) before rounding the two large reservoirs serving
this part of London. This is a partly unsurfaced path and might be muddy. Then
we will wander through Clissold Park before making our way along streets to
Highbury Fields. Weather permitting you might enjoy a picnic on Highbury Fields
or the North London District Office, adjacent to the Fields, will be available with
a cup of tea. From there it is a short distance down to Highbury and Islington

Duchess of Kent Lodge invite you to a presentation by Fred Mairet from Home
Instead, the organisation used by the Oddfellows Care and Welfare department as
an alternative to convalescent home visits. He will talk about what his organisation
can offer to members and Keith Potter will advise the Oddfellows’ role. This is a

Saturday 8 November - Bingo!
Starts at 2pm at Metropolitan Benefit Society Almshouses (MBSA), Balls Pond

event. The session, on behalf of Good Companions Lodge will be held in the
upstairs hall at the MBSA. Refreshments will be provided. The cost per card is £3.

Thursday 13 November - The Elite Clubs Of India And England
Starts at 2pm to 4pm at Kenton Room, Harrow Arts Centre, Uxbridge Road, Hatch
End, Harrow HA5 4EA. We are pleased to welcome another presentation from the
Harrovian Speakers. Indra Sikdar will talk to us about the Elite Clubs of India and
England. The UK Clubs are the New Cavendish Club, the Civil Service Club and
the Royal Overseas League. In India they are the Royal Bengal Club, Tollygunge
Club, Madras Club and Madras Gymkhana. The event and refreshments are free.

Thursday 20 November - I Hearing Dogs for Deaf People plus II Dog Quiz
Starts at 2pm to 4pm at St Andrew’s Parish Centre, 36 Silver Street, Enfield
EN1 3EG. Are you a dog lover? Today’s presenter is Liz Arendt who will be
accompanied by Maple, her loveable canine friend! Liz is the Chairman of the
Herts Branch of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. It is a national charity and centre
of excellence in training dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger
signals in the home, work place and public buildings. After the break, Paul Fitton
will host a Quiz on Dogs, famous and otherwise. Refreshments are free and there
will be a £2 raffle, which includes a donation to the charity.

Thursday 12 March - The Story of the Central Line and its Stations
Starts at 2pm to 4pm - Kenton Room, Harrow Arts Centre, Uxbridge Road, Hatch
End, Harrow HA5 4EA. Why a line that runs 34 plus miles from Epping in East
London over to West Ruislip is called The Central Line. Jeni Plummer’s visual
presentation explains this, the origins of the names and some information about
each of the stations. The refreshments are free and there will be a collection for
Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
Thursday 19 March - I Decades: 1970s plus II Conversation Café
Starts at 2pm to 4pm at St Andrew’s Parish Centre, 36 Silver Street, Enfield EN1
3EG. You are invited to Paul Fitton’s next presentation in the series Decades.
The 1970s - the decade that taste forgot! See and hear memories of that time
and bring your own along! See and handle Museum objects from the time. You
can expect fun and banter as you remember items and events that you thought
that you had safely left in the past. The event is different as it travels around
Oddfellows venues in London as members voice their own memories and
anecdotes. The Different Voices’ Conversation Café brings people together to
start open and friendly conversations leading to a better understanding of mental
health issues and reduce stigma. The cafe space will be set up and decorated
with gingham tablecloths, bunting, posters and balloons. You will be warmly
welcomed in the ‘café’ with free tea, coffee and home-made cakes and cookies
and freely ask questions and receive information about mental health. Organised
by the Advocacy Project. There will be a £1 prize raffle.
Friday 27 March - Photowalk: Theatreland
Starts at 11am at Leicester Square underground station
at street level. You can practise and improve your
photography skills on another of our regular walking tours.
This time, we’ll be looking at the great character and grand
neo-classical, Romanesque, or Victorian façades of the
theatres as well as their history and local anecdotes and
maybe meet a few ghosts! This day out is designed for photographers, walkers
and those wishing to see an interesting corner of London that they may not know.

Wednesday 3 December - Mickie Driver’s Christmas Variety Show and Meal
Doors open at 11.20am with lunch at noon and carriages about 4pm. Takes place
at Wood Green Social Club, 3-4 Stuart Crescent, Haringey, London N22 5NJ Let
your festivities begin with Mickie’s Christmas Special. A splendid Christmas Lunch is
followed by a fabulous, fun-filled show in which a talented cast brings you favourite
Christmas Songs and a finale of most-loved Christmas Carols. It really is a joyful
afternoon. The price of £17.50 also includes a traditional Christmas meal* plus dessert
and tea or coffee. Drinks are available at club prices. Places are available on a first

Thursday 4 December - Harrow Christmas Meal
Starts at noon at the Miller and Carter (The Leefe Robinson), Harrow Steakhouse,

month for the members who meet regularly at Harrow Arts Centre. Today, they are
moving 1½ miles along Uxbridge Road for their Christmas meal. All members are

celebrate the life and music of Elvis Presley, who would
have celebrated his 80th birthday a week ago. In Paul
Fitton’s second presentation, we hear about the life and
death of Hawley Crippin and investigate whether he really
did murder his wife Cora. You be the jury! Your vote counts!
This is a free event, including refreshments. There will be a

Tuesday 27 January - I A Tribute to the Life and Music of the Everly Brothers
plus The Lives and Music of Rogers and Hammerstein

Highams Park, London E4 9JP. Following the death of Phil Everly a year ago, Paul
Fitton has been presenting a tribute to the life and music of the two brothers. You
can enjoy the presentation, featuring words and extracts from 10 songs, including
Crying in the Rain and Wake up Little Susie. Paul’s second presentation will be
a look at the lives and music of Rogers and Hammerstein in the golden age of

Thursday 12 February - Tales From The South Pacific
Starts at 2pm to 4pm at Kenton Room, Harrow Arts Centre, Uxbridge Road, Hatch
End, Harrow HA5 4EA. Regular favourite Paul Mapplebeck returns with more
anecdotes from Sir Arthur Grimble’s A Pattern of Islands. He will add even more
flavour to the anecdotes with his personal experiences in New Caledonia and
Tahiti. The event and refreshments are free.

Monday 23 February - I Oddfellows Stroll: Peckham, Dulwich and Forest Hill
plus II A visit to Horniman Museum
Starts at 11am at Peckham Rye station, which is served by trains from north and
central London and many buses. We will walk to Peckham Rye Park, Camberwell
Old Cemetery and Dulwich Park, a distance of a little over three miles. Here there
is a café and places for a picnic. You may leave the park and catch a bus back
to Peckham Rye station or other destinations. There will be an optional further
one mile walk to the Horniman Museum. This museum displays an interesting
collection of objects and has extensive gardens with fine views and a small nature
trail with an animal walk. From the museum it is a 10 minute walk down to Forest
Hill station for Highbury and Islington and London Bridge and several buses,
