Homecoming Work Day, Kickoff, & Parade
On September 26th, each
class spent the day constructing
floats, and decorating gym
walls and outside windows for
homecoming. All of these had
to be completed by the end of
the day. Finished projects were
judged after the school day.
Kickoff began on Sunday,
September 28th. The finalists
from the volleyball homeroom
games played for first place,
which went to the Junior class.
Sport awards were also
announced throughout the night.
Mr. Cruisin’ went to Andrew Ihm
and Jared Kartman, followed by
Ms. Digger, which was presented
to Andrea Okey. Lastly, Brad Klein
was awarded Mr. Ugly.
Homecoming Court & Dance
C.A.T. sponsored the
Homecoming Dance on Saturday,
October 4th. Kids from grades
9-12 were welcome to attend. It
was a fun night filled with music,
dancing, and food!

Comet Volleyball Still Fighting
This year’s returning varsity
coach is Micki Becwar. Junior
Varsity coach is newcomer Holly
Fishnick. Both coaches are CHS
alumni.
Battling hard in each
competition, the varsity is still
searching for a conference
victory. The weekend of
September 20th, Cassville played
host to Benton, River Ridge, and
Wauzeka. Varsity played tough
and walked away with a second
place finish. Junior Varsity also
competed well, finishing third.
On Tuesday, September 23rd,
both J.V. and Varsity teamed up
with Potosi for a “Dig Pink” night.
Shirts were sold by each team to
raise money and awareness for
cancer. The teams joined for a
group picture before the game,
and then it was down to business
on the court. Although Cassville
played strong, they fell short of a
victory they so desired.
The season is winding
down with two games left in
conference play. The team
traveled to Highland on
Thursday, Oct. 9th and then
they will be home for their final
conference game versus Potosi
on Thursday, Oct. 16th. They
will salute our seniors: Zoe
Gotzinger, Kayla Mumm, Tarka
White, and Kami Kedley as they
play their final volleyball game in
the CHS gym. Let’s go girls!
Back Row: Zoe Gotzinger, Brielle Baliff, Jenna Baliff, Ally Clauer,
Back Row: Christal Bean, Mahcoy Mumm, Coach Holly
and Kayla Mumm. Middle row: Andrea Okey, Danielle Ackerman, Fishnick, Felisa Hampton, and Madelyn Nix. Front Row:
Bailie Becwar, Payton Brinkman, Kami Kedley, and Taylor Ploessl. Abby Borcherding, Paige Johll, and Tarka White.
Front Row: Tarka White and Rylie Laufenberg.
Cross Country: Small but Strong
Andrew Ihm and Jared
Kartman are this year’s members
of the Cross Country team. Once
again keeping them on pace is
Coach Laura Esser. With only two
members, a downsize from last
year, they unfortunately cannot
compete as a team.
Each week Andrew and Jared
push each other to do their best.
They have been working hard to
meet their individual goals. In
several meets this season they
have improved their times from
last year.
With the season nearing an
end, the Sectional meets will be
held at Albany on Oct. 24th and
25th. State will be Nov. 1st at
Wisconsin Rapids.
Good luck Andrew and Jared!

Fuel Cell
Football
On Friday of homecoming
week, the chemistry students in
the fifth and eighth hour classes
celebrated by playing “Fuel Cell
Football.” This is an activity in
which they combine chemicals
to launch miniature “footballs”
towards a scale model goalpost.
“This is a good activity for
homecoming because the kids
need to make the right ratios of
chemicals to make it work.” The
first group to make a successful
field goal earns “CometCash”
so there is some competition
involved. Mr. Hetcher has done
this for two years now, and “the
students seem to enjoy it.” “We
play it up and act like winning the
game that night depends on the
outcome of the experiment. It
is fun, but there is also a lot of
chemical concepts addressed, so
it is a good instructional activity
all around,” says Mr. Hetcher.
High School Business Club
to be “pioneers” of new
marketing project
A new Cassville High
School Business Club has been
established under the direction
of Alisa Oswald, Business Ed.
Instructor. The group is eight
members strong at this time and
is teaming with UW Extension
Agent Todd Johnson as well as
Joe Ploessl of Cassville Car Cruise
organization to help “market” the
Cassville area and surrounding
communities—including across
the river, Guttenberg. The goal
is to market what the area has to
offer to a younger age group via
social media. The UW Extension
is providing additional tech
equipment to the group including
a video camera, microphone, and
a digital-SLR camera to help with
the task. The Business Club is
working to establish similar clubs
in other surrounding schools to
collaborate with. This group of
energetic young people will be
pioneers in developing a club of
this nature. The first project on
the list was for the group to visit
and tour Guttenberg on Monday,
October 6 with an advisor and
group of teens from Clayton
Ridge School District. Capturing
video, photos, and interviewing
was the focus. Members of
Cassville’s Business Club include:
Luke Kirschbaum, Brad Klein,
Destiny Cederquist, Gabe Phillips,
Brett Hedeman, Taylor Ploessl,
Bailie Becwar, and Andrea Okey.

Cassville Football Nearing the end of an
Up and Down Season
The 2014 Cassville Comet
football team has had an upand-down year so far. Right now
they are 3-5 and cannot make the
playoffs. They won two of the
first three, lost their next three,
won their homecoming game
versus Wauzeka-Steuben. Then,
most recently, lost to Shullsburg.
To raise awareness to breast
cancer, the team wore pink socks
during these games. They will
be doing this for the rest of their
season, which ends in October.
Coach Fure says “It’s hard to put
into words. We’ve played ok, but
we need to play better.” This
sums it up well as they have been
in some very close games--five
of them being a margin of two
scores or less. Many of the games
were low scoring and relied
heavily on the defense. “We hold
our own on the defense, we just
need to score some more points”
says senior, Brad Klein. This can
be confirmed by Coach Fure as he
said the most improved aspect
of the team was their ability to
get off blocks and tackle. He also
said “We need to finish games”
because certain games came
down to the very last quarter.
Cassville has one more
game before the playoff, which
they will not be playing in after
being eliminated by their loss to
Shullsburg. They play Benton/
Scales Mound who is 1-7. Junior,
Dylan Johll, says, “We have been
playing great, but we need to
focus the rest of the season,
so we can get done what we
need to get done and finish the
season on a very high note.” The
highlight of the season for most
of the players was the upset win
over the Potosi Chieftains in their
third game of the season. This
was the first time Cassville had
beaten Potosi in twelve years,
after losing twice to them last
year. There is still a lot of room
for improvement on the Cassville
football team, especially since
they will be returning a lot of
starters next year. But right now
they are focusing and making
sure they can finish the 2014
season with one final win.

Heroin: Not
just a Big
City Problem
FFA: World Dairy Expo
The FFA: World Dairy Expo
took place last week Tuesday
on September 30th in Madison,
Wisconsin. “Even though there
were no top placings, overall it
went well ,” stated Ms. Dudley
who took two Cassville FFA
teams with her. One team was
the Dairy Team which included
Zach Clauer, Brielle Baliff,
and Luke Baliff. The other
team was the Dairy Products
which included Andrew
Ihm, Jenna Baliff, and Tyler
Torstenson-Harris. While at
the convention, the teams saw
multiple professional shows
and met with different FFA
members from all across the
state.
From Left to right: Byron Morehart,
Melinda Millin, Patrick Kempfer, Kathy
Marty.
On September 19th Cassville
High School welcomed guest
speakers Patrick Kempher,
Melinda Millin, Byron Morehart,
and Kathy Marty to speak
about heroin and how it can
dramatically affect and change
your life. Each speaker took
turns speaking about how it has
affected them personally and
how it affected their friends and
family. Thanks to Kathy Marty
who set this presentation, the
students and staff of Cassville
got to hear about how drugs can
harm you. The students learned
a lot about these three speakers
and how herion, and any drug,
can hurt not only you but the
people around you.
Above is Byron Morehart singing and
playing the guitar at the end of the
Heroin presentation.

Singing Our
Way to
Belmont
On Tuesday, September 23th,
the Cassville High School and
middle school chorus students,
along with Mr. Gile, attended
Honors Chorus in Belmont. The
students who attended sang all
day from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
While they were there, students
enjoyed socializing and making
new friends in between rehearsal
times, but took it seriously when
it came time to sing again. At 7:00
p.m., after a long day of singing,
they performed a concert for
their family, friends, and other
students.

“The
Importance of
Being Earnest”
On Monday, September 29th,
the Junior and Senior classes,
along with Mr. Corbett and Mrs.
Bernhardt, attended the play The
Importance of Being Earnest at
American Player’s Theater.The
play was comical and entertaining.
During many parts, you could
hear laughter erupt from not only
the Cassville High School section,
but from the whole theater. The
students who went enjoyed the
play and didn’t want the day to
end.
A Fair Day
On Tuesday September
16th, the Junior class attended
an education fair at Platteville
College. They explored
college booths to see what
each college had to offer.
After they finished touring
the College, they traveled
to Fennimore to Southwest
Technical College. While there,
the students picked a field
they were interested in, such
as Agriculture or Business, and
toured the different facilities
each area had. This field trip
was to help students decide
what path they may take in the
future and where they may go
to college.
