It was really a banner year for our club. We kick off 2014 with several events in January; including Social Committee Meeting, Membership Meeting and a DIY Tech Session at Park Place Motorcars in Dallas. The rest of the year holds many other exciting and fun events revolving around our love for these beautiful Mercedes-Benz automobiles including driving events, social events, technical events and even some others outside of the “normal” scope for our club. Stay tuned for more details on these. You may not know, but the North Texas Section of MBCA is now the second largest section in the nation after just passing San Francisco Bay! We would love to see everyone enjoying the benefits and fun associated with the club. Whether you like driving, admiring, working on, enjoying or anything else, your Mercedes-Benz vehicle, we have a place for you’re here. Please consider any of the exciting events or maybe just attending a monthly Membership Meeting just to check things out. I again wish you a very happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone enjoying the club this year. ! ! The Texas Star! S Winter 2014! ! ! ! ! As always their service technicians will provide guidance, insights, tips and tricks and the occasional special tool to help our members complete their maintenance tasks before the “witching hour” of 12:00 noon. The North Texas Section has become a hub of social events during the past year. 2014 will continue providing social opportunities for our members to mix and mingle, socialize break bread, picnic, dine, and, well, you get the idea. We will be picnicking again at Flag Pole Hill on April 12, and are planning dining events at the Wildcatter Steakhouse and the Four Winds. Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, Azalea drive to Tyler, Cross Timbers Prairie 100 Mile Drive and Wine Tasting are already in the works. This year we will also be hosted by Marshall Motors, Park Place Grapevine, Louden Motorcars and Mercedes-Benz of Plano. Get ready gear-heads, it’s going to be a great year! On Friday it was a cool and clear morning for a fall leaf drive through the mountains in Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas. After check-in and passing out the dash plaques 23 folks and 11 cars were ready for a great road trip to Eureka Springs. Welcome to Al and Diana Lussier from the Ft. Worth Section and Fred and Sharon Hudspeth from Tyler who joined our group. We had a series of 154 rally questions as part of the drive and awards were made for the top three winners at our Saturday night dinner. On the way lunch was in a remote area and we had a picnic lunch prior to our trip on the Talimena Parkway. The Parkway has beautiful vistas, wonderful roads through the mountains that truly tested the German cars. Four of our group went ahead to test their cars while the rest of the group enjoyed a more leisurely drive. The day was long, but we had stops along the way to view the fall color. It was fun getting our picture with the Section Banner along the way. We arrived in Eureka Springs in the afternoon with the Land-O-Nod greeting us on their sign with a welcome to the Mercedes Club. After unpacking several folks went together for dinner at a local restaurant and recapped the days drive. It was fun just spending time visiting with new friends. The Texas Star! On Saturday morning we met at 8:30 AM and drove through the restored homes in Eureka Springs and then a colorful drive to Dogwood Canyon for a tram ride through the park with waterfalls, ponds with trout and sightseeing in the area where exotic animals are raised. It was fun seeing the Elk herd up close, the big longhorn steers and the buffalo herd. Dogwood Canyon tram ride was 2 hours long and our tour guide Jim gave the group a great commentary on the history of the area. Also they had a display of live Owls and a friendly snake to show the group. The high light was seeing Gayle Brewer riding a bronco in the canyon. We also visited the log chapel were weddings are held and then we saw the beautiful covered bridge that was built by Amish carpenters with traditional non-power tools. After the tram ride we drove to Big Cedar Lodge for lunch at the Truman Cottage and a tour of the Big Cedar registration area and gift shop. We then returned to our motel, The Land-O-Nod for a social with some wine and snacks before dinner. Dinner was at the Bavarian Inn a German Restaurant in Eureka Springs. Their special is sauerkraut soup and great German food. At dinner the Rally Question awards were announced and a First Place Plaque was given to KR and Patty Wright for the highest score, Second Place was awarded to Ron and Marilyn Harwick and Third Place was awarded to Mic and Karen Micmanus. Congratulations to the winners. After dinner we went to the Pine Mountain Theater for an Ozark music program. Free popcorn and a fun music evening and then back to our motel for an end to a long and fun day. At 8:30 AM on Sunday morning five cars caravanned home on Highway 21 through Berryville on the way to Kingston, Arkansas, which is the location of the bank, tied to the White Water scandal. Then on to the Highway 40 junction for an end to the scenic drive and an interstate drive home. On the way Duc Lam got to meet a new friend, a highway patrol officer. Lucky for Duc it was a warning and all returned home safely. Thanks to all who made the trip, it was great meeting all of the group and getting to know a lot of new friends. Winter 2014! 5 T H E T E X A S S T A R News from National MBCA National participates in and sponsors several nationally oriented events throughout the year. See what’s up with activities and benefits! MBUSA Says, “Better Act Fast to Get a New 2014 CLA Class!” To many critics and auto reviewers, the brand-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a game-changer: a great-looking ride with a sub$30,000 price tag that could turn the heads of many entry-level luxury buyers. If you're one of those shoppers, though, you'd better be quick on the draw. According to Detroit News, supplies of the CLA will be tight for much of 2014. That heartbreaking revelation comes from a memo sent to dealers last week, which warned them of low volume for the CLA through June, at least. That's because the plant that manufactures the four-door coupe is running at maximum capacity, and won't be able to boost output until improvements are completed in July. The good news -- at least for Mercedes fans -- is that the CLA has been one of the automaker's best product launches in decades. It's largely credited with boosting Mercedes' sales in the U.S. by as much as 14 percent through November 30. That increase has given Mercedes the coveted title of best-selling luxury brand in the country, beating out its compatriot and rival, BMW. What's more, the CLA has helped lower the average age of the company's customers. The typical Mercedes shopper is currently 57 years old, but the median age for CLA shoppers is considerably younger: 46. How long can the CLA keep working its magic for Mercedes? That depends on how smoothly production ramps up to meet demand. We'll keep you posted. 6! Winter 2014! The Texas Star T H E T E X A S S T A R 2013 North Texas Section Annual Christmas Party December 8, 2013 - Mark Your Calendars! December 21, 2013 - Change Your Calendars! The North Texas Section Annual Christmas Party at The Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club Gene Jurick gave an update on MBCA Sections in his Region. During registration and dinner Ron Seifert created a DVD presentation that ran on the big screen reliving events from the Section during the past year. It is always fun reliving the memories of the events that our wonderful cars have made for us. The cars bring us together to share friendships that make MBCA special. A special thank you to Karen and Mic MacManus for heading up the Christmas Event Committee of Gayle and Robert Brewer, Maurice and Rosemary Nahas, Ron and Carolee Seifert. What an evening! After the Texas ice storm that hit our area the first of December we rescheduled the Christmas Party to December 21st at the Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club. We had 66 members attend the event for an evening of good food, good entertainment for dancing and dining and a great group of raffle gifts that the social committee obtained for the event. The Christmas decorations made the evening feel like Christmas and the dinner menu and desserts made it special. Maurice Nahas was our Master of Ceremonies for the evening to keep the party lively. We discovered during the party that we have some really good dancers in the group for future reference. We had a new SL550 that was provided by Mercedes Benz of Plano on display in the entryway along with the new German delivery program AMG SLK that Gene Jurick brought to the party. Brett Jurick our Section President presented our Members of the Year Award to Robert and Gayle Brewer for their outstanding work in volunteering for social events as well as the work Gayle does as the Section Secretary. They are wonderful members and you can always count on Gayle and Robert to bring fun to Section Events. The Texas Star! Winter 2014! 7 T H E T E Book Review X A S S T A R Saturday Drive to Waco Mercedes Rainer W. Schlegelmilch, Hartmut Lehbrink, and Jochen von Osterroth H.F. Ullmann 2013/English, German, and French/ISBN: 3848002671 408 pp; color photos; hardcover with slipcase ($39.99) A beautifully done revision of the two-volume 700 page edition published in 1997 and the single-volume softcover 600 page edition published in 2004/2007. Although the latest work is updated to include the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL and A-Klasse (not for the US market), its 408 pages is an abridgement of the previous two editions. Among many other examples, it includes chapters on the 2005 S Klasse (2007 was the first model-year in the US), the 2003 SLR McLaren, and the 2002 Maybach. Each car is covered by a brief introduction in English, German, and French, and a myriad of color photographs of excellent quality with brief captions. The model year of the photographic subject is listed under the first photo in each chapter. For example, the Chapter entitled Mercedes-Benz 600 1963, which is the model year it was introduced, actually contains photos of a 1971 600 PullmanLaundaulet. Although briefer than the previous editions, when considering the updates, this volume should be an interesting and entertaining addition to every MBCA member’s library. To anyone familiar with the previous works, this edition carries on the tradition of featuring outstanding photographs. The book contains a bibliography, but no index. On Saturday, February 22, 2014, the North Texas Section will host a one-day driving event to Waco, Texas. We will leave from the IHOP in Ennis, TX. On our way to Waco, we will caravan through the metropolises of Avalon, Blooming Grove, Dresden, Silver City, Purdon, Pursley, Coolidge, and Prairie Hill. What else could you ask for??? Seriously, this will be a fun drive through the back roads between Dallas and Waco. At Waco, we will drive by the prototype of the Brooklyn Bridge in a nearby park and then visit the Texas Ranger Museum. At the conclusion of our tour of the museum, we will head toward Elm Mott to the Homestead Traditional Craft Village at Brazos De Dios and the Ploughshare Institute of Sustainable Culture. We will have lunch at the Homestead Cafe. Try their peanut butter pie; it’s to die for!! We will then have time to visit the buildings at Homestead, i.e. the forge, the woodworking school, the potter’s house, the barn (store), the gristmill, the fiber crafts (weaving and spinning), the granary, the herb garden, the cheese shop, and the general store. We may even want to go on a hayride (depending on the weather)! After all this, you can return to Dallas either with the group or on your own; it’s your choice!! Mark your calendar now, and be sure to contact Gayle Brewer at 972-772-8022 or by email at [email protected] with your questions and to sign up for this fun trip. A head count will be needed to make reservations for the lunch, etc. It’s the first drive of 2014, and we want to make it a good one—as always, the more the merrier!! Cool Tools Protect Those Wheels! For those Mercedes classic car enthusiasts, the standard Mercedes wheel are often replaced with upgraded or larger wheels . Most of these come with a clear coated paint finish or are chrome plated. Damaging these wheels and lugs with factory steel lug wrenches is always a danger. To protect against surface damage, the use of plastic coated lug sockets is highly recommended. These sets are widely available for $60-$70. at Sears or other automotive parts shops. Most popular sets include both the 17mm and 19mm socket sizes. 8! Winter 2014!
