Just the work that is needed to be done in disaster relief areas is mindboggling. Have you ever assisted in a mission project or disaster relief effort? If so, you know how fulfilling an experience it can be to help those who are struggling to put their lives back together. If not, it is a perfect way to get in touch with your “missional-self”. It is a great opportunity to team with other caring people to help those who cannot help themselves. If you are interested in either serving on a mission team or sponsoring a youth to participate on a team, please let the office know as soon as possible by calling 285-4314, or speak with Pastor Doug or Brenda. 1 HELPING IN THE PHILIPPINES Recently Lilian Gallo, Southeast District Superintendent, visited her home in the Philippines. In anticipation of her visit, she contacted the district superintendent in the area of the Philippines hardest hit by the typhoon. She inquired as to the needs of the churches in that area and to his needs in providing leadership for the region. The district superintendent in that area is also a pastor for a local congregation. In order to visit the churches under his responsibility, he must travel by bus. Financial compensation for his time, talent and leadership is approximately $1,800 per year. When Lilian asked him about his personal needs, he mentioned that his dream is to have a small (UTV) mini-truck to carry supplies to outlying churches. The cost of such a vehicle is $3,000 (American). Obviously, with an annual income of $1,800, such a mini-truck is only a dream. Or is it? If one district superintendent in the typhoonafflicted Philippines was able to carry blankets, tarps and other supplies to the outlying churches, how might the recovery process truly be accelerated. Currently, there is too much to do and not the right equipment to get it done. That’s where we come in. We can well imagine how important it is to have a vehicle to get to flood ravaged areas. We can sense in our hearts that if we could help one person to help others, we would be doing the work of the Lord, even though from a distance. If you are able to make any contribution to this effort, there will be a donation canister in the coffee area for your contribution. We can be the Lord’s hands and feet in the Philippines. The author takes a look at some of the parables Jesus told from a different point of view, so we can glean more meaning from what has been so familiar that we take it for granted. Each week is completely independent from the others, so if you can’t come some of the time, it’s not a problem. If you would like to join us, contact Joyce Orcutt at 285-8988 or [email protected] and I will order a book for you or will tell you where you can order the study book yourself. WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY All women of the church and community are invited to attend our Monday Bible study group on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 207 S. Rose Hill in Long Grove. We began on Sept. 23rd and meet at 6:00 p.m. Our book for this year is "A Season of Mystery: 10 Spiritual Practices for Embracing a Happier Second Half of Life" by Paula Huston. Come curl up on the sofa and relax and enjoy the fellowship and good conversation about how we can live as Christian women in a hectic world. Call Nancy Herrin for more info at 340-2865. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL Our poverty study began October 13th. The book for the study is “What Every Church Member Should Know About Poverty” by Bill Ehlig & Ruby K. Payne. It may be available locally, but is available through Amazon.com and as a downloadable e-book. Join us to learn more about those around us whom we need to understand better and who may need help we can provide. Announcements SALVATION ARMY MEAL The Salvation Army Meal will be served on Monday, Feb. 10th. The sign-up poster will only be up one week before we serve the meal. Call Janalee @ 285-4321 or Judy @ 285-8157. Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2014) is fast approaching and the community is wondering if we will be doing the Lenten Pasta Dinners in 2014. Sally and Keith Riewerts graciously got us started and managed the up-start of our boot-strap endeavor. The objective was to help pay down the mortgage. Well, thanks to the hard work of many people and the generosity of our membership, the mortgage was paid in full in December of 2013. We give God the praise and glory! The dinners were also a wonderful way of providing an opportunity for our members and constituents to work, play and pray together. In God’s own way, we grew in ‘oneness, purpose and communion’. We thank God for being drawn closer together. Now that the dinners are a tradition, we are wondering, “How will they help our church in the future?” We are hopeful that they will continue to be a conduit to building healthy working and interpersonal relationships. We also expect that they will provide an avenue to defraying unexpected expenses and funding future outreach (missional) opportunities. Therefore, we need your help. Please consider what you can do to make the 2014 Lenten Pasta Dinners a raving success! 4 Children, Family, & Youth Ministry Kid’s Own Worship Children ages K-6th grade are invited to attend Kid’s Own Worship in Room 10 immediately following the children’s sermon.
