PASTOR’S CORNER
“What if you could join a team and work on much needed
missions and disaster relief projects?”
Lately, we have been receiving communications asking for
mission and disaster relief workers for projects in coastal
states affected by hurricane Sandy; in the Appalachia
Mountains and Ozarks; South Dakota (Native American
Indians); inner city projects (Atlanta to New Orleans); as
well as the Caribbean and Central America. Just the work
that is needed to be done in disaster relief areas is mindboggling.
Have you ever assisted in a mission project or disaster
relief effort? If so, you know how fulfilling an experience it
can be to help those who are struggling to put their lives
back together. If not, it is a perfect way to get in touch with
your “missional-self”. It is a great opportunity to team with
other caring people to help those who cannot help
themselves.
If you are interested in either serving on a mission team or
sponsoring a youth to participate on a team, please let the
office know as soon as possible by calling 285-4314, or
speak with Pastor Doug or Brenda.

HELPING IN THE PHILIPPINES
Recently Lilian Gallo, Southeast District
Superintendent, visited her home in the
Philippines. In anticipation of her visit, she
contacted the district superintendent in the area
of the Philippines hardest hit by the typhoon.
She inquired as to the needs of the churches in
that area and to his needs in providing leadership
for the region.
The district superintendent in that area is also a
pastor for a local congregation. In order to visit
the churches under his responsibility, he must
travel by bus. Financial compensation for his
time, talent and leadership is approximately
$1,800 per year. When Lilian asked him about his
personal needs, he mentioned that his dream is
to have a small (UTV) mini-truck to carry supplies
to outlying churches. The cost of such a vehicle is
$3,000 (American).
Obviously, with an annual income of $1,800,
such a mini-truck is only a dream. Or is it?
If one district superintendent in the typhoonafflicted Philippines was able to carry blankets,
tarps and other supplies to the outlying churches,
how might the recovery process truly be
accelerated. Currently, there is too much to do
and not the right equipment to get it done.
That’s where we come in. We can well imagine
how important it is to have a vehicle to get to
flood ravaged areas. We can sense in our hearts
that if we could help one person to help others,
we would be doing the work of the Lord, even
though from a distance.
If you are able to make any contribution to this
effort, there will be a donation canister in the
coffee area for your contribution. We can be the
Lord’s hands and feet in the Philippines.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON BIBLE STUDY
Our Thursday Bible study group resumed on Jan. 30th @ 12:30 p.m. with a study of the book
“Parables from the Back Side”. The author takes a look at some of the parables Jesus told from a
different point of view, so we can glean more meaning from what has been so familiar that we take
it for granted. Each week is completely independent from the others, so if you can’t come some of
the time, it’s not a problem. If you would like to join us, contact Joyce Orcutt at 285-8988 or
[email protected] and I will order a book for you or will tell you where you can order the study book
yourself.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
All women of the church and community are invited to attend our Monday Bible study group on the
2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 207 S. Rose Hill in Long Grove. We began on Sept. 23rd
and meet at 6:00 p.m. Our book for this year is "A Season of Mystery: 10 Spiritual Practices for
Embracing a Happier Second Half of Life" by Paula Huston. Come curl up on the sofa and relax
and enjoy the fellowship and good conversation about how we can live as Christian women in a
hectic world. Call Nancy Herrin for more info at 340-2865.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our poverty study began October 13th. The book for the study is “What Every Church Member
Should Know About Poverty” by Bill Ehlig & Ruby K. Payne. It may be available locally, but is
available through Amazon.com and as a downloadable e-book. Join us to learn more about those
around us whom we need to understand better and who may need help we can provide.

SALVATION ARMY MEAL
The Salvation Army Meal will be served on Monday, Feb. 10th. The sign-up poster will only be up one week
before we serve the meal. There are several ways that you can help. You can help Sunday morning, Feb.
9th, make Jello, bake brownies, or slice ham. You can prepare hot food on Monday afternoon, load up food
on Monday at 5:15, take it to the meal site, serve, then return empty pans to the church to wash and put
away. Be sure to sign up on the poster or let Joyce know (285-8988 or [email protected]) what you can do.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
United Methodist Women will meet Wednesday, Feb. 26th, at 7:00 p.m. in the church library. Devotions and
the program will be given by Marcia Nestler. Elizabeth Leslie is hostess. All women are invited to share in
this evening of fellowship.

LENTEN PASTA DINNERS
THE CLUB
"The Club", the after school program at Neil Armstrong
on Thursdays, is in need of much more adult help. We
desperately need more adults to improve our adult to
student ratio. The time commitment would be from 3:004:40 p.m. on Thursdays during the school year. Our
schedule is:
- give the kids a nutritious snack as soon as they
arrive in the media center after 3:05 dismissal from
their classroom
- help them with homework
- show "What's in the Bible", a video series made by
the same folks who did Veggie Tales
- organized game time in the gym or a quieter activity
in the media center
- home at 4:30
NORTH SCOTT FOOD PANTRY
If you would like to help our local food pantry, special
needs during February are canned meat (tuna, chicken,
etc.), Hamburger Helper type meals and side dishes.
CHILDREN’S BAZAAR
Items needed to complete gifts:
1. Apothecary jars (with lids)
2. New golf balls (need 20)
3. Sea shells (variety of sizes/colors)
4. Small jewelry boxes
5. Used/new Christmas cards
6. Used/new Christmas gift bags
Please place items in the black baskets under the table
to the right in the Gathering Area. Questions? Call
Janalee @ 285-4321 or Judy @ 285-8157.
Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2014) is fast
approaching and the community is
wondering if we will be doing the Lenten
Pasta Dinners in 2014.
Sally and Keith Riewerts graciously got
us started and managed the up-start of
our boot-strap endeavor. The objective
was to help pay down the mortgage. Well,
thanks to the hard work of many people
and the generosity of our membership,
the mortgage was paid in full in
December of 2013. We give God the
praise and glory!
The dinners were also a wonderful way of
providing an opportunity for our members
and constituents to work, play and pray
together. In God’s own way, we grew in
‘oneness, purpose and communion’. We
thank God for being drawn closer
together.
Now that the dinners are a tradition, we
are wondering, “How will they help our
church in the future?”
We are hopeful that they will continue to
be a conduit to building healthy working
and interpersonal relationships. We also
expect that they will provide an avenue to
defraying unexpected expenses and
funding future outreach (missional)
opportunities.
Therefore, we need your help. Please
consider what you can do to make the
2014 Lenten Pasta Dinners a raving
success!

Kid’s Own Worship
Children ages K-6th grade are invited to attend Kid’s Own
Worship in Room 10 immediately following the children’s
sermon. In KOW, kid’s worship through song and activities,
and they hear a devotion or mini lesson on the same
scripture read in the adult service. KOW is an opportunity
for kids to worship in kid’s style. Brenda Sorensen is leading
in February.
Wonderful Wednesdays
On Wednesday nights, EUMC is hopping with lots of Fun,
Fellowship and Faith-developing activities. Join us for
dinner at 6:00 PM, where kids and adults develop
friendships over food and fellowship. From 6:30-7:30, kids
divide into groups for faith-development classes. Sr. High
meet with Steve Sorensen in Room 9, confirmation kids
meet with Pastor Doug and Dave Prochaska in Room 10,
and K-6th graders meet with Brenda Sorensen in
Fellowship Hall. All kids and adults are welcome! THANK
YOU to Sally and Keith Riewerts for volunteering to make
the meals, and for the volunteers who have responded to
the need for adult supervision in the K-6th grade class. We
are blessed with a church of servant hearts!
Sunday School Opportunities
Sunday School! Pre-K-3rd grade meets in Room 5, 4th-6th
in Room 2, Jr-Sr. High in Room 10, and adults meet in the
Library. All are encouraged to attend.
Children’s Chimes
We are going to start up a
Children’s Chimes group once
again. Any youth interested in
being a part of Children’s Chimes
should see Brenda Sorensen.
Tentative practice days would be
either Sundays or Wednesdays.
Let’s Go Sledding!
All kids are invited to a sledding
party on Sunday, February 16th,
from 1:00-3:00 PM at Scott
County Park. Bring your sleds for
an afternoon of fun! If the
conditions are not favorable for
sledding, let’s go bowling instead!
See Brenda for more details, and
to let her know if you plan to
attend and which event you would
prefer.
