News to Friends Special Edition Hospice by the Sea INC. I Now Serving the Community Together f your life has been touched by the support of hospice care, it may be hard to imagine facing advanced illness without it. Today, hospice care is an integral part of our community, offering comfort, compassion, and improved quality of life for families who are facing advanced illness. Yet, as recently as the 1970s, there were only two hospice organizations in the nation, located in Connecticut and California. Two forward-thinking groups of volunteers put Palm Beach and Broward counties at the forefront of the hospice movement, founding Hospice of Palm Beach County and Hospice of Boca Raton (which would later become Hospice by the Sea). Both were not-for-profits, both established a philosophy that anyone who needed care should receive it, and both were founded in 1978. To put this into historical perspective, it wasn’t until 1979 that Florida passed the Florida Hospice Act, allowing Left to right: Douglas Root, Mary Harrison, Trudi Webb and Dan Brablec at the site of Hospice by the Sea's Boca Raton Care Center, which was completed in 1989. patients to be admitted to hospice care. And in 1982, the U.S. Congress passed the Hospice Medicare Benefit. For the past 36 years, Hospice of Palm Beach County and Hospice by the Sea have cared for nearly 200,000 families, serving everyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. With their common history and philosophy, it just made sense for these two esteemed organizations to come together to serve the community as one. In 2014, Hospice by the Sea and Hospice of Palm Beach County were officially combined under a new parent company, TrustBridge Health. Together, they are able to secure the future of not-for-profit hospice care in our community—care that puts the comfort of patients and families first, helps everyone in need, and continues the vision of their founders. Thanks to the efforts of Helen Ross, Phili p and Mary Hulitar, John J. Brogan, Nate and Jane t Appleman and others, Hospice of Palm Beach County’s C. W. Gerstenberg Hospice Center was completed in 1988. Trusted by Generations Just 4 years after the first hospice in America was founded, volunteers established Hospice of Boca Raton, later renamed Hospice by the Sea (HBTS), and Hospice of Palm Beach County (HPBC). Thirty-six years later, our combined organizations care for 1,900 patients per day. We serve Palm Beach and Broward counties with 1,400 employees and 800 volunteers and 10 inpatient care centers. It is the culmination of years of planning to unite our two great hospice organizations that have so much in common—parallel histories, mission and philosophy of care. For 36 years, the innovation and vision of our founders have been our beacon. And, the dedication of staff, volunteers and supporters has made their vision a reality—providing compassionate hospice care to all who need it. Innovation has been the hallmark of Hospice of Palm Beach County and Hospice by the Sea, from our early adoption of the hospice movement, to building the first free-standing hospice care center east of the Mississippi, to providing cutting-edge medical care, and offering services that go beyond what is reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid and insurance. Our combination has strengthened our services. It enables us to build upon our shared vision, innovative care and decades of expertise. With this special issue of News to Friends, we want to welcome everyone in our new, extended hospice family. We hope that you will get a sense of our shared history, the breadth of our combined services and our role in the community. We are proud of our history and look forward to our future together. g 2 TrustBridge Health Leadership Top - Dave Fielding, CEO and Paula Alderson, President Bottom - Marian Pearlman Nease, Vice Chair and John Marino, Chairman Two hospice organizations with the same mission and parallel histories. Now that we’re combined, we are able to increase the depth of our services. The italic text below denotes these expanded services. In addition to outstanding medical care, emotional and spiritual support, we offer: Medications, Equipment and Supplies – Each item is delivered directly to the patient’s bedside. We have our own in-house pharmacy and durable medical equipment divisions, operating 24/7 for our patients. Integrative Therapies – Clinical Massage, Aromatherapy, Healing Touch, Reiki and Guided Imagery comfort the mind and body, easing pain, stress and depression. In addition to patient programs, we provide these soothing therapies to family members of patients. Music Therapy – Music Therapy creates a physical and emotional connection that alleviates depression, pain, and stress in patients. We have one of the largest Music Therapy programs in the country. We also offer an internship program that provides clinical training for therapists who are seeking board certification. Caregiver Support – We provide the information, hands-on training and 24-hour support that our hospice family caregivers need as they care for their loved ones. We also offer educational presentations for caregivers throughout the community (see details on page 6). We recently launched special caregiver education pilot programs at the Cleveland Clinic in Westin and our Boca Care Center. Grief Support for Children and Adults – Counseling and support are available to everyone grieving the loss of a loved one, offering healing and recovery. Our family programs, children’s camp and school programs, and therapeutic group programs have expanded. See facing page for more details. 4 How Your Donations Support Our Mission Thanks to the fundraising activities of our Foundations and our generous donors, we are able to offer compassionate care to everyone in our community, not limited to what is reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance or the ability to pay. This support helps us provide innovative care that meets each family’s unique needs. Listed below are some of the programs and services supported by our Foundations. Special Comfort Measures – We are among only 4% of hospices nationwide that provide open access to hospice services to people while they continue radiation, chemotherapy, intravenous medications and transfusions for their comfort. These medical treatments are not reimbursed under the insurance hospice benefit. Example: A 73-year-old woman who qualifies for and wants hospice care, but needs to continue radiation to contain the size of a tumor and manage pain. Charitable Care – Many people in our community have no health insurance or means to pay for their hospice care. As notfor-profit hospices, we care for everyone who qualifies for and wants our care. Example: a 19-year-old man with liver failure who has no medical insurance. Music and Integrative Therapies – Our donors fund these non-invasive therapies, which supplement our traditional medical care to provide comfort and symptom relief. Example: An 87-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s is only responsive with her family during and after music therapy sessions. Grief Support – We are able to provide an extraordinary range of services for children, teens, and adults who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Examples: Specialized support groups, individual and family grief counseling, pregnancy and infant loss, school-based group counseling, and three children’s camp programs—Camp Good Grief (a special 3-day overnight camp), Camp Stingray (a week-long day camp) and Camp Art to Heart (an all-day expressive arts camp). The Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine – Partnering with University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, we offer an American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellow Program. Example: Each year, the program accepts two fellows pursuing board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a specialty that is greatly needed for the care of terminally ill patients.
