NEW ZEALAND
MOUNTAIN SAFETY COUNCIL
HOW DO I COMPLETE
OUTDOOR LEADER?
The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is a national
organisation with a mandate from our member organisations to
encourage safe participation in land-based outdoor activities.
There are two pathways available to complete MSC Outdoor Leader.
We facilitate the setting of standards, offer training and
education opportunities, create and distribute resources, lead
public awareness campaigns and foster positive support in the
community so that more people can discover and enjoy New
Zealand’s outdoors safely.
1. Modular pathway via MSC branches
The modular pathway requires the trainee to complete a number
of compulsory trainings by attending various activities/courses.
The prerequisite requirements are lower than that of the
residential course but trainees are required to commit to multiple
training events before they can be assessed.
Important: You must be a member of the MSC to participate
in the Outdoor Leader programme via the branch modular
pathway.
2. Residential course via MSC National Office
This pathway requires the trainee to have completed a number
of prerequisites, such as minimum experience and first aid
training, before they participate in the residential course.
WHAT IS OUTDOOR LEADER?
The MSC has provided quality outdoor leader training for many
years and prides itself on being able to offer an award that
encourages and fosters increased levels of safe participation in
the outdoors.
The residential course provides a designated 8 days (7 nights)
of training and assessment and only requires one significant
time commitment.
Important: Participants wishing to attend a residential course
must either be a MSC member, member of a collaborative
leader development participating organisation, or a full feepaying participant.
Many of the people who gain MSC’s Outdoor Leader award use
it in their activities with other organisations, most commonly in
youth or community organisations with a strong focus on young
people. Others gain Outdoor Leader to increase their personal
knowledge, skills and experience or because they want to
become an MSC instructor and deliver outdoor education and
outdoor safety training to the public. This often involves working
towards gaining higher level MSC instructor warrants.
Whatever your reason for participating, the MSC Outdoor
Leader award will provide you with a strong competency base
and allow you to contribute to the MSC vision of ‘more people
participating safely in land-based outdoor activities’.
MSC Outdoor leader is a nationally recognised industry award
that allows people to organise and lead groups on overnight
tramping/bushcraft trips and camps.
Outdoor Leaders have the skills to provide leadership, sound
judgement, decision making and effective group management
in the NZ bush environment.
For more information about the ODL training and
assessment process, see the MSC Outdoor Leader
Overview document. This contains everything you need
to know about Outdoor Leader.
AS PART OF THE OUTDOOR LEADER AWARD,
YOU WILL COVER TOPICS INCLUDING:
Outdoor emergency management
Risk management
Leadership
Managing groups in the outdoor environment
Communication
Weather
Trip planning
Overnight camping in the bush
Tramping skills and knowledge
Navigation
River safety
WHAT’S AVAILABLE AFTER
OUTDOOR LEADER?
The Outdoor Leader award is the first step on the MSC instructor pathway (excluding Firearms and Avalanche). Once
you have completed Outdoor Leader, you can begin training
towards higher level Bushcraft awards and other disciplines
such as Outdoor First Aid, Abseil and Alpine.
