THE PROPERTY
42 Barrack Row is one of seven terraced properties of brick
elevations beneath a tiled roof, built in the 1820’s; being part of
the Bryanston Estate which came into the hands of the
Portman family in the 1770’s. Lord Portman built the Row for
returning soldiers who had fought during the Napoleonic Wars.
It is hard to imagine these 7 dwellings containing two families
each as they did in the 1840’s and 50’s.
A mid-terrace property with enormous charm and character
and surprisingly spacious; period features include exposed
ceiling timbers and window seats. The entrance porch leads to
a comfortable sitting room with an impressive inglenook
fireplace with centrally position woodburning stove on a tiled
hearth and remnants of the old bread oven. Either side of the
chimney breast are two deep alcoves, ideal for storage.
Doorway through to kitchen with fitted timber floor and wall
units and deep shelving. Belfast sink and wooden drainer, blue
tiled work surfaces and white tiled splashback with flora
interest. Deep understairs storage cupboard.
Carpeted half turn stairs lead to the first floor with a double
sized bedroom, cupboard housing the gas fired boiler and
capacious family bathroom with a roll top bath and shower. A
door leads to half turn open stairs to the second floor; double
sized bedroom, which is the full length of the house.
OUTSIDE
Shared brick path allows access across the front of the terraced
houses as well as a pedestrian rear access running along the
back of the gardens giving access to the old stables, now
converted into storage sheds for each house,. There is also a
wood store. The old bath house to Barrack Row belongs to a
neighbour.
Steps lead up to the garden, via a brick tiled patio area, ideal
for alfresco dining, shaded by a glorious apple tree and
surrounded by a forsythia hedge on one side and brick wall on
the other.
Curved flowering border edges the lawn,
underplanted by numerous bulbs, leads to a large conifer tree
and rear entrance.
