Board Strategic Planning Retreat
On Thursday, May 8, the
NYCOMEC Board of
Directors gathered for a
meeting and strategic planning retreat at the LaGuardia Mariott Hotel. During
the productive session, the
Board divided into strategic
planning reference
committees to perform a
SWOT analysis of the
organization. The Board
identified some of the
important roles NYCOMEC
can play in graduate medical education in the future,
which includes the single
GME accreditation system.
Plans were made for a
subcommittee that would
bring together allopathic
and osteopathic leaders to
Yuval D. Bar-Kokhba, Esq. speaking to the Board
facilitate the transition to a
single GME accreditation
system.
The meeting also featured
a guest presentation by
Yuval D. Bar-Kokhba,
Esq., Partner at Garbarini
& Scher, P.C. who is experienced in matters involving hospital liability,
commercial insurance
coverage, and medical
malpractice, among other
topics. At a previous meeting, the Board expressed
concerns about trainee
liability in the face of hospital bankruptcy, and Mr. Bar
-Kokhba addressed many
of the members’ questions.

An article by Adam Bitterman,
D.O. of Plainview Hospital, was
featured in the “In Your Words”
section of the Journal of the
American Osteopathic Association in the May 1, 2014 issue.
Dr. Bitterman, a fourth-year resident in the Orthopedic Surgery

emphasis on professionalism
and empathy in patient encounters. Read the complete article

Long Beach Medical Center Sale to South Nassau Approved
This week, a U.S. Bankruptcy
Court judge approved the sale
of Long Beach Medical Center’s

Communities Hospital. South

with its plans to develop an
urgent-care clinic on the site of

Senator Schumer Advocates for FEMA Funding for Good
Samaritan Hospital
At the end of April, it was reported that U.S. Senator Charles E.
Schumer urged the Federal
Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) to give swift
approval to Catholic Health
Services’ application for $20.9
million in hazard mitigation funding. The funding is intended to
purchase three new emergency
electrical generators and raise
all generators at Good Samari-
tan Hospital Medical Center and
Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center (OLC) above sea level.
New York State established
Catholic Health Services’ application as a high priority for New
York State. Good Samaritan
Hospital has the largest Emergency Room in Suffolk County,
and its geography within a flood
plain and lack of redundancy in
its current stock of older generators make it vulnerable. The
hospital lost power and was partially evacuated during Superstorm Sandy. Senator Schumer
explained that the FEMA funding is critical for helping protect
the healthcare facilities of Good
Samaritan and OLC, keep their
life-saving equipment running
with electricity, and avoid future
evacuation.

Member Hospitals Earn “A” Grades in Safety Survey
The Leapfrog Group released its Spring 2014 update to the Hospital Safety Scores, and a number of
NYCOMEC member institutions received an “A” grade. These ratings indicate a hospital’s ability to
prevent errors, injuries and infections.
In New York State, Nassau University Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital received A’s. In
New Jersey, the top grade was assigned to Jersey City Medical Center, Meadowlands Hospital
Medical Center, and Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
Using 28 safety measures identified as having potential to save patient lives, The Leapfrog Group
evaluated more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide on a scale of A to F. The Leapfrog Group reported that
the latest data show 10 percent or higher improvement in performance among nearly one-third of all
hospitals since 2012. For more information, visit http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/ or see The
Leapfrog Group’s summary here.
