Market & Economic Analysis
ECSAT
14 December 2014
Overview of the Division’s mission
The objective of the Integrated Applications Promotion (IAP) programme can be summarised as “supporting the
development of sustainable space-based services”. Specifically, IAP aims to engage:
•
•
•
A wider range of users, especially those unaware of the benefits that space technologies can bring, e.g. to new
sectors of major economic importance such as renewable energy, autonomous vehicles or smart cities;
A wider combination of systems, integrating several space and terrestrial tool, techniques and technologies to
create end-to-end solutions; and
A wider range of actors from across the service and value chain, who are collectively able to create, implement
and operate new services and applications that will be economically sustainable by end users in both public and
private sectors.
Overview of the field of activity proposed
The Young Graduate Trainee (YGT) will work in the Applications & Services Business Office (ABO) of the Integrated and
Telecom-related Applications Department.
A major aim of the ABO is to identify and develop new market opportunities for space-based systems, along with new
ways of doing business to realise those opportunities. This involves defining user needs and developing relationships with
players in the target sectors. It further involves analysing, building and critiquing business cases for the development of
new services, based upon integrated applications that combine both space and non-space systems.
Increasingly, the ABO team are conducting socio-economic impact analyses of projects and companies that have been cofunded by the IAP programme; identifying the business support needs of these companies; and helping to connect them
to the necessary business support services . This includes investment readiness and access to finance.
The following are the main activities in which the Trainee will be involved:
•
•
•
•
•
Qualitative and quantitative market research and analysis of potential target sectors for integrated applications
and of the opportunities and priorities within individual ESA Member States;
Identification and analysis of commercial, technical, regulatory or operational requirements within target
sectors;
Supporting the economic and cost benefit analysis of proposed applications and services;
Supporting the development of new partnership agreements for integrated applications activities with
commercial and institutional entities;
Supporting the preparation of contact lists, interviews, meetings, focus groups, questionnaires and workshops to
assist with any of the above.
It is anticipated that the Trainee will also provide analytical inputs as contributions to the development of statements of
work for open competitions in new sectors of opportunity.
