Nga mihi o te waki a koe me to whanau Greetings to you and your family.
Wow – what a fantastic athletics sports last week! It was great to see the spirit in which students participated
and even better to see lots of them exceeding expectations and achieving with excellence.
A huge thank you to all staff for their input and well done to all competitors, in particular to Mr Lash and his
crew - I am looking forward to the results.
I would like to welcome Cerise Lawn and Patrick Buhler to our school. As you are probably aware Mr Reid
is on leave for the next few weeks recovering from some surgery. Mr Buhler is taking his teaching classes and
Cerise is in to cover the guidance counsellor role.
Nau mai, haere mai – welcome to you both.
In other staff news; Lauren Burgess has been named in the black ferns squad – something she has worked really hard for and has her first camp at the beginning of March. On a sadder note Matt Lash has secured a new
teaching position at FDMC from week 4 next term. We will be really sad to see him go but know that this is a
wonderful opportunity for him and for his family and we wish him every success.
You will be well aware that bullying is forefront of a lot of news of the news late – it has been highlighted because
of the suicide of a prominent TV personality Charlotte Dawson. Students will be far too young to remember
her but I know that staff and whanau will definitely know who she was. She was the victim of cyber bullying as
well as being someone who suffered from a mental illness - the combination of the two lead to a tragic result.
Bullying will never be ok at OHS – and we are all key to making sure that bullying is not an issue at our school.
When I was at school, many years ago, bullying was an issue too – sometimes I was bullied and sometimes I was
the bully – not something I am very proud of now. But my generation was very different from todays.
When we left school that was it, and we really didn’t have contact with people till the next day. Nowadays because of the technology available – phones, internet, social media sites - bullying can be 24hrs, it can be incessant and relentless. And it can seem to be anonymous – some people think that no one will know it is them if
they do it from behind the so called security of a screen or via a text message – they think that it’s ok because
they haven’t actually said the words to someone.
My rule of thumb is that no matter what the situation is, whether it is positive or negative, if you can’t say something to someone’s face then don’t say it at all.
NZ’s Justice Minister Judith Collins’ is proposing a law change around cyber bullying. The Harmful Digital
Communication Bill will introduce tough penalties for those who seek to harm others from behind a computer
screen.
If you are concerned about what is happening to someone at school then let us know – tell a whanau teacher,
dean or a member of the SLT – tell someone. Together we can make a difference and live the DREAM.

DREAM
The Dream Team have had their first meeting of
2014, and what a successful meeting it was. The
team helped to finish off the DREAM letters started during orientation by the year 9s. Keep an eye
open for this piece of artwork, it will look stunning
when mounted. Students ensured the classrooms
had lots of visual cues promoting our values all
around the school.
The first count of Opz Bucks took place, and students are obviously living the DREAM as a huge
amount have been banked or cashed.
Brody, Xavier, Jenna, David, Te Rei, Brooke, Abbi
and Dylan helped to create a very amusing skit
which they performed in assembly to encourage
more students to join the team. This was very well
received as we have had numerous students wanting to join. Morgan also put together a powerpoint with images of students living the DREAM
in all different settings during a typical day at
Opunake High School.
Jamie and Bobbie-Jo are working hard on introducing DREAM into the business community.
(Pictured right) Certain businesses that have
DREAM posters in their windows will be giving
out Opz Bucks to students of OHS demonstrating the DREAM values in their establishments.
Meanwhile Ashleigh and Nikkita are using their
artistic talent to create a new set of DREAM postcards.
To make your DREAMs come true takes 10% inspiration, but 90% perspiration so let’s keep working hard at living the DREAM.

ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett Speech
Competition
On Friday, 7th March, Dawn Mills proudly
represented the school at the regional finals
of the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett Speech Competition, This national speech contest remembers those involved in war. Her speech
was well prepared and delivered with a hearty
emotional impact. Dawn boldly included the
actions of the “conchies’ – people who refused to fight – in her well balanced address.
Thanks goes to those students and relations
who supported her on the day with much
aroha. Pictured right- Katie Potier, Baylee
Crawford, Paula Aitken, Dawn Mills and
William Andersen-Gardiner.
Although she did not win, Dawn has exceeded our expectations. Well done.
