A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN
GREAT Works AHEAD
As my tenure as chairman of the board of directors comes
to a close, it’s a good time to assess where United Church
Homes is heading as an organization.
We’ve come a long way in a short time, though there is still
much to do. Three years ago we were facing many complex
and difficult challenges, as multiple issues converged and
compelled the board to insist on more cohesive teamwork
within the management group.
What arose from that challenging time is a testament to
what can be achieved when talented people combine their
strengths and align their efforts to find solutions.
The year 2013 will be viewed as a time when United
Church Homes made significant progress. In late 2012,
the board of directors approved a strategic plan to identify
priorities for the organization and to begin defining how we
would achieve specific objectives. The plan was, by design,
both ambitious yet attainable. While we have made
material progress with each item in the plan, there remain
opportunities for additional improvement.
The areas identified in the strategic plan are a blend
of both internal and external initiatives. The internal
initiatives include quality, marketing, advancement,
human resources—all components of the organization’s
capacity to demonstrate operational improvements. The
external initiatives, which include healthcare system/
network integration and strategic alliances development,
are designed to enable UCH to take fuller advantage of
opportunities as they arise. To continue to thrive in the
future, United Church Homes will need to leverage its
internal strengths to capitalize on external situations.
Our accomplishments in delivering quality care and services
have never been greater, as evidenced by the attainment
or retention of 4- and 5-star CMS ratings at Chapel Hill,
Fairhaven, Four Winds, Patriot Ridge, Trinity and SEM
Haven. Our marketing team is creating all-time highs in
census and quality mix, while our occupancy in senior
housing has grown by 25 residents. Our advancement office
is developing and nurturing relationships with donors and
potential donors that are designed to generate a return.

optimistic. We filled
all the cottages at
Kroft Commons at Chapel Hill (plus added a waiting list),
prompting us to begin building additional accommodations.
We recently broke ground for a multimillion dollar capital
project at Fairhaven, and are adding new therapy space
at Parkvue. We’ve also got major capital projects under
consideration at Chapel Hill and Trinity.
In short, United Church Homes is now organized and
prepared to grow, not only our capacity to serve our
existing residents, but also to grow our array of services.
We have in place the culture, the capacity and the initiative
to advance and fulfill our mission—to provide housing,
healthcare and supportive services for older adults that are
responsive to the needs of the whole person and based on
Christian values.
It should be noted that United Church Homes is now
well-positioned to further enhance its quality initiatives,
to advance its brand and reputation within the healthcare
and housing sectors, to play a key role in a fast-changing
healthcare market, to have multiple significant capital
investment projects underway at the same time, and to
hone our friend- and fund-raising efforts to bolster our
already strong financial position.
In other words, we’re doing good work—as can be seen
elsewhere in this issue of Spirit magazine. It’s time to focus
on the great work that will grace our future.
Finally, it’s been my privilege to serve on the United Church
Homes board for the past nine years, and to serve as
chairman for the past three years. The organization is in
very capable hands, with the finest board I’ve ever served
with, and the most talented leadership team I’ve ever
experienced. Great works lies ahead.
