I underestimated how much community interest there would be in curling: I thought we would get about 200 people for the event, and instead we taught 391 people how to curl, probably 30-40% kids! By mid-day we were turning people away at the door and posted to our Website, Facebook and Twitter telling people to stop coming. Simply incredible. My deepest thanks to all of the 31 volunteers who made this day possible. Special thanks to the members that wandered by the club by accident and jumped in to help out. We grossed close to $2,000, and with a bulging mailing list of eager new curlers, I expect we will have no trouble filling our Youth programs in the fall. Early Season Leagues Great news! The club is going to run some pre-season leagues to help you get the 2014/2015 season started right. Great for new curlers! Board of Directors Hi Guys – ME AGAIN – we are still looking for volunteers/ members who may be interested in volunteering for the Board. Congratulations to Aaron Squires, Richard Krell, Spencer Nuttall, Fraser Reid and John Gabel for winning silver at Men’s OUA Championships. Good Luck at Nationals March 19-23 in Regina! The majority of Ontario curling clubs are guided by a Board of Directors. If you’re new to curling or you’ve been a member for only a few years, you might feel you don’t have anything to offer the Board. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Curling clubs are always trying to recruit new members, and who could be better than a new member to offer the Board fresh eyes, new energy, and interesting ideas. Please don’t let that stop you from volunteering to help guide your club. So, please take some time to think about this opportunity. Speak to current and past members of the Board of Directors and last but not least, the last thing we want is to lose a great member/volunteer because you felt that you were pushed into doing too much. It’s OK to say no, (but we hope you say YES) just remember that. Sherri Helmka Vice President/Administration Email: [email protected] (H) 226-430-2083 (not long distance) (C) 519-444-8483 Around the Rink Hello everyone. Last week we (thank you Jim and Carl) flooded the ice and did all the requisite scraping and pebbling and pebbling and scraping to get it back in shape for curling. When we were done it looked great. Saturday it was back to back rentals and knee prints as far as the eye could see (or was willing to look). Now, I like to see people out on the ice enjoying themselves whatever their level of ability; and the great thing about ice is that you can fix almost anything that can happen to it, after the fact. While a game is going on though, knee (or any other body part) prints present a problem in that they create a flat spot or even a depression in which debris tends to accumulate, often resulting in picky conditions. A knee or hand resting on the ice after delivering your rock only needs a few seconds to start melting in. So please be considerate of your fellow curlers and remember, the rock that picks might be your own. Jeff Parkway Lincoln Friday Night Mixed It's a bit hard to believe, but there are only four more Friday Nights before our regular season comes to an end on March 28th. Please make sure that any necessary make-up games are played before the 28th. Our playoffs will run on Friday April 4rth (Semi-Finals - all teams qualify) and Friday April 11th (8 Event Finals + a jitney followed by closing banquet). A sheet will be posted this Friday for teams to indicate if they would be able to play their Semi-Final game on either Saturday April 5th (after 2:30 pm), or on Sunday April 6th at 3:30 pm. That would free up Friday the 4rth for those teams. We need at least two games to switch to have enough ice available for all semi-finals to be played. You can also mark down a preference for playing the April 4rth Semi-Final at 5, 7, or 9 pm. Alternatively send me an email. Bruce McConnell Men’s Daytime The second event is over with the following results: Tuesday am lost one game this event due to a weather cancellation. With a record of 6-0, the team of Ray Hanton, Bob Lichti, Brian Gleiser and Keith Kenning were first. Tom Powell and Gary Cook each had a record of 5-1, but had not played each other. Tom won the throw off to the button to take second place. With Tom were Bill Hess, Gary McLaren and Roy Wuertele. On Thursday, Tom Powell took first place with Bob Lichti, Lorne Quanz and John Medel. Gary Cook came in second with Bruce Lowe, Norm Green and Peter Harthill. I think we should have a drug test for Tom & Bob after these results! Congratulations to Roy Knight who turned 90 in February and Aden Snyder who achieved that last September. We had a little party for them after a Thursday game. The large cake did not last long. Cheers, Dave K-W Detroit Curling Exchange The second leg of the 97th Curling exchange will be held on March 14, 15 and 16, 2014 when Detroit travels to K-W. The sign-up sheet is now up in the curling lounge so please come and join us. With the 100th coming up in 2017/2018, plans for this special event are already in motion. We are always on the lookout for new participants, so why not start now and become a part of the 100th celebration. For more information about this long running friendship and very hospitable exchange, please look up our website. See our Website - http://www.kwgranite.com/KW_Detroit_Exchange Ron Shane Business Ladies Ladies, Our season is nearing an end. At this time I’d like to remind those working towards winning our league, and the right to play off against the Monday Night representative for a chance at being our Club Representative at the Dominion Club Championships, that you must read below: Here are the guidelines you must meet in order to play in the event. 1. The curling club, represented by the team, must be affiliated with its Provincial/Territorial curling association and all dues must be paid in full. The players of any club champion team must be members in good standing of the affiliated curling club. Any player can be a member of more than one affiliated curling club, but shall declare one "home club" for this competition. 2. Each club will declare a men's team and women's team of 4 players that have played together regularly in a sanctioned club league. Alternatively, club members who curl regularly may participate in a designated The Dominion Curling Club Championship competition within their club. Players who play exclusively in a major/super league without playing in another sanctioned club league are ineligible to compete. 3. Each team will be allowed only 1 player who has played in a Juniors', Men's (Brier), Women's (Scotties) or Seniors' provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons.* (2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14) *Exception - Provinces/Territories with an open provincial/territory event will be permitted 1 player who has placed top 25% in a Juniors', Men's (Brier), Women's (Scotties) or Seniors' provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons. 4. All games will be 8 ends with ties being decided by a full extra end. 5. Once a four person team has been declared a club champion, a maximum of 1 replacement/substitute player from the club can play lead. It is at the discretion of each curling club to determine their replacement/substitute rules throughout their process to declare their club champions. Business Ladies Conintued 6. Each team will be allowed a maximum of 2 players under the age of 20, as of December 31st of the year prior to the championship (minimum age of 15 as of December 31st). Provincial/Territorial curling associations may adopt a more restrictive age criteria if they choose. 7. The Dominion has the sole authority to grant exceptions to these rules in extraordinary circumstances. Before exercising this discretion, The Dominion will consult with the relevant Provincial/Territorial curling association, and will notify the Provincial/Territorial association in writing of any decisions regarding exceptions that are granted. You will note that some of this information reads "Dominion", they just haven't updated all of their printed material yet to reflect the name change to Travelers. With regards to Rule 5: we will follow the guidelines put forth from Travelers, and any substitute/Spare will play at the lead position. THE GAME WILL BE PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 9TH AT 6PM. Good luck to our League Representative. Pam MacCollum Day Ladies Hello everyone, this past month all members have been watching closely to the Olympic events, especially the curling games. Many families relax and enjoy the week doing things together or reuniting with distant family members. March celebrates St. Patrick`s Day, a day where the Irish sport their green clothes and enjoy green beer. So I will end with Irish humor. McQuillan walked into a bar and ordered martini after martini. Each time he removed the olives and placed them in a jar. When the jar was filled with the olives and all the drinks consumed McQuillan started to leave. A watchful customer nears him and says `S`cuse me, sir``, who was puzzled over what McQuillan had done, `What is this all about`` `Nothing``, replied McQuillan, `My wife just sent me out for a jar of olives. `` Submitted by: W.
