Useful Planning Tools
You may already be familiar with our Continuing Care Program, we talk about
it periodically because it’s a valuable resource that can spare your companion
animals from unnecessary distress. Your pets will, of course, be unhappy if you pass
away before they do, but you can ease their transition into a new living situation
by planning ahead. Our Continuing Care Program is set up to do just that, and is
available to any of our members who choose to take advantage of it.
One of our supporters, April Glatt, is an attorney who specializes in estate planning.
She suggests a Pet Trust to complement our Continuing Care Program. To learn more
about this option, contact April at [email protected] or 650/573-9500. To request
a brochure about our Continuing Care Program or start the enrollment process,
contact Lisa Van Buskirk at 650-340-7022 x327 or [email protected].

Springtime Successes
We are finding homes for almost a dozen animals every day, on average!
Here are a few recent placements.
A pit bull puppy we named Suzi was
left in our after hours kennels with
minor fractures in her hind leg. A staff
member fostered Suzi for a few weeks
until she was physically healed. When
it came time for us to select a sweet
dog to visit 9-12 years olds attending
our Animal Camp, we hand-picked Suzi.
Two campers – sisters – went home
that evening and wouldn’t stop raving
about Suzi. A week later, Suzi had a
new loving family! The two girls had

“Two years ago in February I adopted Val as he was named by
PHS. He was a year old, and clearly had been on the run for
quite a while…emaciated, with torn pads on his paws, some
lacerations and digestive issues. But, it was clear he was a
really sweet dog and the shelter nursed him back to health.

Our Center for Compassion:
great moments daily
at the new pride of the Peninsula
It’s been just over 2 1/2 years since we opened the doors to our Tom & Annette Lantos Center for
Compassion, drastically changing the adoption experience for our community. The word is out.
In this short time, we’ve placed nearly 9,000 animals into new loving homes. We’ve hosted art
shows, a fashion show, countless tours, birthday parties, a scene from a reality show and a television
commercial. Below, some commonly asked questions from our visitors:
Q. Who paid for all this?
Q. Don’t you think this place is too nice?

re there more animals available
for adoption at the old facility?
A. No. All the animals available for adoption
are housed at our new center.
Q. This seems great for the people,
but how do the animals like it?
How could someone not leave with one?
A. We don’t get it – we think they should too!
Q. Your bunnies have the 2nd floor corner
suite – shouldn’t that be for your
president?
A. They outnumber him and are cuter!
A. The animals love it. Come and see for
yourself!
Q. The dog dorms are great, but do
the dogs get out?
A. Yes, dogs get brisk daily walks outside,
potty breaks and time in our dog park.
They spend time in training classes,
time in their rooms with volunteers and
have visits with prospective adopters.

You may have seen recent media reports about this facility being rebuilt -- at its

and people and we are happy to be a valued consultant on this project. We will
keep you posted on plans as they progress. The County is promising no stoppage
of animal control services for the animals or residents during construction.

Your generous support enables PHS/SPCA to save and change animals’ lives daily.
Supporting PHS/SPCA Ways to Give
We receive no funding from Humane Society of the U.S., ASPCA or any national animal
welfare organization. Our animals depend on your support. For information about
any of the options below, please contact Lisa Van Buskirk at 650/340-7022 x327, or
[email protected] or go to our website PHS-SPCA.org and click on Donate.
General Donations
General donations can be made by phone, mail, or
online. You can also mail your check or credit card
number (including expiration date & phone number)
to: Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, 1450 Rollins
Road, Burlingame, CA 94010.
Gifts of Stock
Gifts of stock offer two-fold savings. Donors pay
no capital gains on the increased value of the
appreciated stock and receive a tax deduction for the
full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring
securities is easy.
Monthly Giving...Faithful Friends
You can set up automatic payments for credit cards
and electronic bank transfers, or we can mail you
envelopes for the year if you’d like to write checks.
After the end of the year we send a summary letter
for your records, so you don’t have to keep track of
individual letters for each donation. You can now
submit your info online at PHS-SPCA.org/monthly.
Matching Gifts
Many companies match (double or even triple!)
their employee’s charitable contributions. Simply
check with your employer or Human Resources
Department to see if they will match your gift.
Or, visit our website PHS-SPCA.org for a partial
list of participating employers.
Planned Gifts
By remembering PHS/SPCA in your will, trust, or
other type of planned gift, you can provide for your
family and friends while still making a meaningful gift
to help animals. Become a member of our Forever
Friends Legacy Society and protect the lives of
innocent animals for years to come.
Memorial and Honor Gifts
Memorial gifts are a thoughtful way to honor the
memory of a deceased pet or person. We send the
family a notification card. If the donation is $150 or
more, we will permanently display the deceased’s
name on our Memorial Wall. You can also make gifts
to honor someone during their lifetime. Birthdays,
holidays, anniversaries, weddings, retirements and
“thinking of you” occasions are some events you
might consider for an honor gift.
Vehicle Donations
Donate your car, even if it won’t pass smog or isn’t
running. We handle all the paperwork, allowing you
to gain a nice tax deduction while avoiding the hassle
of selling. We can arrange to have your vehicle picked
up, or can coordinate a drop off. The process is
simple and easy! Visit PHS-SPCA.org/cars to submit
your information online, or contact Dana Troy:
650/340-7022 x389, [email protected].
Bricks & Bowls: Own a Piece of PHS/SPCA!
We have fun, unique naming opportunities for you or
a loved one. List your name, the name of a beloved
family member, friend, or pet, or other wording of
your choice on a personalized engraved brick or pet
bowl plaque. We display them permanently at our
Center for Compassion for donations starting at
$1,000, payable in installments
if desired. To learn more
contact Lisa Van Buskirk at
650/340-7022 x327 or

New Ways
to Promote
our Vital
Spay/Neuter
Work
Forty-one years ago when we opened our
low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic (the first of its kind
in the U.S.), our “I’m Into S&N” gear would have
been shocking. We should have used it! In reality,
we didn’t need a risqué slogan on T-shirts or hats.
As James Earl Jones’ character said in the movie
Field of Dreams, “Build it and they will come.”
And, they did. In 1972, the year before we opened
our clinic, PHS/SPCA took in over 45,000
unwanted dogs and cats. The year after we
opened, the number of incoming animals took
a sharp, downward, turn which continued for
decades. We added a mobile clinic seven years
ago, and began offering free fixes for pets in
targeted communities. The number of homeless
dogs and cats has since dipped below 6,000.
This year, we’re averaging six mobile clinics per
month and making a huge difference.
Spay/Neuter remains a cornerstone
of our work. You can support it by
spreading the word, making a gift,
or sporting a shirt or hat, available
in our Furchandise store.

Something old, something new…
If you’re into clothes and bargains, we
have two ways to support PHS/SPCA:
Visit our Center for Compassion for
logo gear in our Furchandise store,
or check out Pick of the Litter a few
blocks from our center, where we
sell quality, gently used clothing
including designer labels.
