Anonymous 4 sings songs of love
On their 1994 album Love’s Illusion, the extraordinary vocal quartet Anonymous 4
brought 13th century motets of courtly love from the Montpellier Codex to the
top of the classical charts – spending 29 weeks on the Billboard Top 200. Ten
years later, they return to the source – this time exploring the juxtaposition of
desire for the earthly lady Marion and adoration of the heavenly Marie.

SCARLATTI Carlo Re d’Alemagna
IMPORT
Fabio Biondi returns with the first recording of Carlo Re
d’Alemagna by Alessandro Scarlatti, first performed in Naples in
January 1716. The opera was resurrected in 2003 by Biondi (leader
of the innovative ensemble Europa Galante) who led a concert
performance with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. It is in
many ways a typical example of Neapolitan Baroque opera with
action assigned to the recitatives whilst the characters are developed
during the arias. A mixture of opera seria and opera buffo, the opera
deals with the accession to power and its exercise.

Named 2014 Conductor of the Year by Musical America, Pablo HerasCasado has made his name exploring repertoire that is outside of the
mainstream. For his second recording on the harmonia mundi label,
Heras-Casado conducts Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.2, nicknamed
Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise). Commissioned to commemorate the
400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press, the work
is a massive symphony-cantata for soloists, chorus and orchestra.
Although clearly inspired by Beethoven’s ninth, the comparison did
the work no favors with critics of the time and eventually it fell into
an unjust obscurity. The symphony consists of a three-movement
instrumental ‘overture’ followed by ten movements for soloists and
choir and orchestra set to texts from the Lutheran bible. Joined
by sopranos Christiane Karg and Christina Landshamer and
tenor Michael Schade, Heras-Casado leads the Bavarian Radio
Symphony Orchestra and Choir in a powerful performance of
this sweeping vocal and choral epic.

Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, which the composer described as, “a requiem
without despair,” was written in 1950 following the death of
Christian Bérard, a leading figure of 1940s Paris who designed the
sets for Cocteau’s films and plays. This masterly work, dedicated to
the Virgin of Rocamadour, gives pride of place to the chorus and
clearly shows its line of descent from the French motets of the age
of Louis XIV. It is paired with the Sept Répons de Ténèbres, Poulenc’s
last choral work. Although sacred in nature, it was written for a nonreligious celebration, the opening of New York’s Lincoln Center for
the Performing Arts. This recording’s superb cast features soprano
Carolyn Sampson and the Estonian Philharmonic Symphony

Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos scarcely need an introduction. Widely
regarded as among the finest orchestral compositions of the Baroque
era, these six works dedicated to the Margrave of BrandenburgSchwedt in 1721 explore a dizzying array of instrumental
combinations and timbres. The rise of historically informed
performance practices in recent years has shed new light on the
evergreen Brandenburg Concertos and greatly expanded the gamut of
interpretive possibilities. Three centuries later, the cycle is as open
as ever to new interpretations, as the sparkling performances by the
Freiburger Barockorchester on this recording aptly demonstrate.

Hyperion presents a rarity in their ongoing Anglo-Australian artistic
collaboration: music by an Australian composer who was once at
the heart of the English establishment. Malcolm Williamson was
one of many Australian creative artists who relocated to Britain in
the mid-twentieth century. Within a decade of settling in London
he had established a reputation as one of the most gifted and
prolific composers of his generation. However today, he is almost
forgotten and his music virtually never performed. This set of his
complete Piano Concertos is therefore an important document as
well as a compendium of deeply appealing music. Piers Lane, the
Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Howard Shelley are the
ideal performers of these unjustly neglected works.

Arensky’s Piano Trios represent a fine example of the Russian
romantic piano trio, a form ‘invented’ by Tchaikovsky, Arensky’s
close friend and influence. The Piano Trio No.1 is the more popular of
the two, dedicated to the cellist Karl Davidoff. Davidoff is regarded
as the founder of the Russian school of cello-playing, and Arensky’s
dedication accounts for the fact that the cello plays such a prominent
role. The Piano Trio No.2 is one of the composer’s last works, and
marks a considerable advance in Arensky’s compositional techniques.

Hyperion’s Romantic Cello Concerto series continues to bring new works

group of composers. Here, Alban Gerhardt performs the three
concertos by Hans Pfitzner. Pfitzner’s early Cello Concerto in A minor
was scorned by his teachers (although liked by the composer himself).
His Cello Concerto Op.42 is a beautifully constructed work that derives
its material from a lyrical cello solo heard at the very start of the
work. The Cello Concerto Op.52 is dedicated to Ludwig Hoelscher, a
pupil of two giants of German cello-playing: Hugo Becker and Julius
Klengel. As a bonus, the recording also includes Pfitzner’s Duo for

The Gramophone Award-winning partnership of Gerald Finley and

performance — and all but submerges them under the ice. Winterreise
is the second of Schubert’s two great song cycles on William Müller’s

as evidenced by the three works that the Modigliani Quartet have
chosen for their second release on Mirare devoted to Papa Haydn.

Tuba player Melvyn Poore is a world-renowned soloist, composer and scholar. This recording offers a selection of notable
contemporary works (including a composition of his own) by Georg Katzer, Cort Lippe and Valerio Sannicandro. In these
works, the tuba, combined with the live electronics, acts as a meta instrument, while at the same time being the calming
influence, no matter whether the works are meticulously fragmented or narratively structured. Trumpet player Marco Blaauw
has made the further development of the trumpet, its technique and repertoire, his life’s work. He frequently collaborates
both with successful contemporary composers and younger composers that deserve to be heard. On this recording, Blaauw
presents a fascinating selection of contemporary compositions for trumpet. It includes works by Liza Lim, Rebecca Saunders
and the composer of the title track, Carl Ruggles.

Originally issued on Concord in 1985, Soular Energy by the Ray Brown
Trio has long been considered both a great straight ahead jazz album
and an audiophile’s dream. It is highlighted by the sparkling playing
of pianist Gene Harris (who led the popular Three Sounds in the
1960s). The album also features guest appearances by tenor player Red
Holloway and guitarist Emily Remler for “Mistreated But Undefeated
Blues.” Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio did exceptional mastering
work for this new SACD version offered by Analogue Productions.

Fans of Penguin Cafe have been overjoyed at the band’s comeback
and recent recordings. The catalyst for this new album came about in
2012, when Arthur Jeffes worked on a project with NASA and the
International Space Orchestra. The tracks Aurora and 1420 have since
been beamed into space as part of NASA’s Kepler project. These
touchstones marked a ‘satellitic’ beginning for Penguin Cafe’s new
album entitled Red Book, which then presents a collection of songs that
return to earth to undertake a rich, cross-continental musical journey.

Back in the studio for Savant Records, pianist Bruce Barth displays
more of the monster talent that caused the Village Voice to proclaim
that he is, “one of the best pianists in town, period.” His unique, Monktinged voicing, big tone and propulsive rhythmic drive sets his sound
and style apart from any other pianist. Joined here once again by vibist
Steve Nelson and with trumpet/flugel phenom Terell Stafford on
hand, Barth offers a stimulating set list of a few standards alongside his
always interesting originals. The colorful drummer Montez Coleman
and the dynamic bassist Vicente Archer round out the rhythm section
and the result is thoughtful, driving and contemporary jazz in the best
sense of the word by five of the finest players on the scene today.

“A l’origine de ce projet somptueux, conçu comme une offrande pour
Daniel Lavoie, il y a dix ans de travail d’un vrai musicien d’aujourd’hui,
Laurent Guardo. Une réalisation digne de l’alchimie, un sens du son tout
simplement inouï, au carrefour imaginaire entre guitares acoustiques,
luths, udus, tablas et violes de gambe. Appelés au voyage, nous voilà
bientôt devenus captifs émerveillés de la licorne. Elle ne vous lâchera
plus…

Conceived especially for Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Lavoie
by Laurent Guardo, a true musician of today, La Licorne captive (The
Captive Unicorn) was ten years in the making. Guardo binds the album
together with an alchemist’s touch and an ear for sounds that are quite
simply out of this world, bringing us to an imaginary crossroads where
acoustic guitars meet lutes, udus, tablas and violas da gamba. Beckoning
us to follow, we too are soon made captive, entranced by the unicorn –
forever spellbound.”

Malian superstar Habib Koité’s album Soô (which translates as ‘home’)
was recorded in his own home studio. A purely logistical decision at
first, Koité’s choice of venue gradually became the foundation for the
album’s theme. Home is where families and friends reunite, and where
new ideas and directions are discovered. Soô reunites both friends and
countrymen and explores new musical territory with both joy and
reflection. For the first time in 22 years, Koité is not backed by his
longtime band, Bamada. The album’s cast of all new musicians includes
guest appearances by Toumani Diabate and Bassekou Kouyate and
features Koité playing banjo on several tracks.
