The Company
PEI Mussel King is owned and operated by the Dockendorff family. The Dockendorffs have
been growing mussels on PEI since 1978 and are recognized as pioneers of the Canadian mussel
industry. Together, their operations comprise the largest mussel-growing operation in North
America.
Wages and benefits
The starting wage is $13 per hour and it goes up from there. Employees are eligible for
benefits such as a comprehensive health plan after three months of full-time work in a
permanent, not a temporary position.
Job Descriptions:
Mussel King provides people with hairnets, uniform and ear-protecting devices with AM-FM
radio and auxiliary connector for Ipod. All non-supervisory/managerial positions are considered
'low stress' positions.
We’ll be looking to fulfill the following positions:
Forklift Operators: Experienced or non-experienced.
Sock Strippers: The position has two sections and require the employee to stand for long
periods of time in a wet/muddy environment. 1. Requires individual to pull plastic meshes out
of rotating metal blades and make sure no plastic mesh is going through to grading machines causing them to get stuck and break. Job is safe but person has to be able to follow procedure, be
aware and understand of potential danger. 2. This position requires person to use machinery to
lift box with mussels and dump it into a vortex with rotating metal blades so plastic meshes can
be separated from mussels. Job requires good judgment and attention to detail. Repetitive task.
Boxers: The person in this position will be taking flat boxes and folding them into its actual
shape.
Graders: The job requires people to be able to recognize broken shells from non-broken ones in
a fast pace, also, the grader will keep an eye for small mussels that were not discarded by the
selecting machine. The job is basically that of visually inspecting the mussels before they go to
packaging. It's a fast pace job as you get several mussels per second. There are three locations for
which graders are needed: 1. An original visual check to look for defective mussels after
automatic selecting machine, 2. A second visual inspection to look for defective mussels that
may have gone through the first visual inspection, 3. In a completely different section to salvage
good mussels that were selected as ‘defective’ by the X-Ray machine. All the jobs require the
same skills, and long hours standing on your feet.
Plastic Box Washers and Sprayers: Position requires employee to stand in wet environment specially design uniform will be provided for that task, and power wash plastic blue bins where
the mussels are placed. Position requires someone to beware of moving machines and parts.
