Food News Winter 2014 Food Safety in Bayside There are over 800 registered food businesses in Bayside. These comprise of 503 Class 2 food businesses (eg, restaurants, takeaways, cafes etc). In the first 6 months of 2014 Council’s Environmental Health Officers have conducted over 950 inspections of food businesses. Council has also investigated over 45 food complaints in the first 6 months of 2014. Complaints range from cleanliness of food premises, food handling, food poisoning and adulterated foods. . New Food Safety Program Template – Version 3 now available The Department of Health has developed a simplified food safety program template for Class 2 premises, e.g. cafes, restaurant and takeaways. Food Safety Program for Class 2 Retail & Food Service Business No 1, Version 34 This updated template is also suitable for a business with multiple associated Class 2 food premises. For example: A restaurant that also provides off site catering, or Businesses that prepare foodstuffs at a permanent site and sell foodstuffs from a stall, food van or market. Currently there is no requirement for existing Class 2 food businesses using the current Food Safety Program for Class 2 Retail and Food Service Business (No 1, Version 2) to change to Version 3. We recommend using Version 3 as it has the following benefits for businesses: •Shorter and simpler records •Enhanced instructions about how to handle food safety •Important new information on allergies and labelling •Instructions about handling raw eggs and raw egg products •Up to date information for food vans and stalls.
