October 2014
Message From Our Chapter Chair: Well, we made it through the summer again; flying time will be much smoother and less sweaty. I hope this is the year of fly-outs for the Phx 99s. We had a great meeting last month with our annual Mexican Fiesta, where we announced two chapter scholarship winners. We had a few new FWPs from Chandler that Courtney Smith brought along and a returning member, Anne Muirhead, who has taken on the role as Fundraising Chair. Please get with her to help out at the next meeting. Fall always promises lots of activities for our business meetings. I would like to see everyone participate in at least one activity to promote our group via flying, education, painting another compass rose, attending a local airport festival to talk to the public at our Ninety-Nines booth about our missions. You can always check our local www.phx99s.org site or the international site www.ninety-nines.org to find many other great links. Copperstate is coming up and Paula Barron has taken the time to get our booth registered and a forum set up
to advertise our Flying Companion Seminar (we need the money). Hopefully that will help get enough participants to make it happen again this year. Please sign up for one or the other at Copperstate and planepool or carpool. It’s a great way to get to know your fellow 99s and attend Copperstate at no cost. Please submit any fun info on trips, flying, training or other flying/99s-related news to Courtney Smith ([email protected]) for future newsletters to share with your fellow Phx 99s. ~Marguerite Baier October 2014∙ Phoenix Chapter SW Section Events and Fly-Ins

Lots of fun things are happening with the Girl Scouts! Multiple events are being discussed and we wish to invite more 99s to join us in supporting this rewarding partnership and to share our love for aviation with young women. I believe these events change who these girls become! Please join us and let’s do this together! Events in Review: Nov. 2014 – Aviation Day at PHX for prior Aviation Campers (Possible Event in Review) TBD – Aviation Day at CHD (Possible Event in Review) Mar 2015 – Annual Girls Can Fly Day (Historically held at DVT or IWA) Jun 2015 – Annual Discover Aviation Camp in Prescott, AZ (proposed dates 6/21/15 - 6/26/15) Discover Aviation Camp introduces girls ages 13-18 to the world of aviation as both a vocation and career. Girls meet industry professionals, explore how airplanes are built from the ground up, and take their very first flying lesson. Discover the difference aviation can make. Discover Aviation. September has been a busy month of planning! Stacy Howard (Phx 99) setup a meeting with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott. ERAU is a key partner in the Discover Aviation Camp, as they host multiple events throughout the week-long camp, including a wind tunnel demonstration, hands-on experience in their ATC Lab, a tour of the Crash Lab, flying their flight simulators and their flight department takes the girls on their first flights to name just a few. The meeting brought up key ways we can improve our partnership with ERAU and possible activities for camp in 2015. A total of 17 people were in attendance including representation from The Ninety-Nines (Stacy Howard, Sherlyn Halloran, Bonnie Coffey, and Angela Dyer), the Girl Scouts (Michelle Keefer) and 12 key people from ERAU. Follow-up meetings are being scheduled with ERAU and we are forming a 99s committee to continue strategizing on camp and other exciting opportunities to share aviation with young women in the Girl Scouts. Please join us as we need your help! We had such a fun time on our day trip to Prescott. So many great ideas were discussed and lots of action items are being worked! This long standing partnership needs more 99s! We hope to post monthly updates in the newsletter to keep everyone informed. For more information on how you can be a part of these exciting events, please reach out to Angela Dyer ([email protected]). Home Airport: Glendale Helen Beulen, Chapter Vice Chair Certificates: Private pilot since 2003, Tailwheel Aircraft: Legend CUB, Kitfox Speedster Total time: 700+ hours Home airport: Falcon Field Certificates: Private Glider, Commercial, CFII, MEI, ATP Aircraft: Varga, Cessna 150, PC-12 (Pilatus), C-500 (Citation) Total time: 4,800 hours Most exciting aviation experience: Winning the Air Race Classic 2007 and 2013. Also, flying my airplane across the country to celebrate the 100th anniversary of flight. Landing at Kittyhawk just after a thunderstorm passed is a moment I will never forget. Most exciting aviation experience: I flew with my husband in the Cub to SEA through California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah, then back again. It was three weeks of real cross-country! Flight or trip you want to take: I’d like to get the chapter to fly into Lake Havasu for a weekend. I want to kayak the river… Advice for student pilots: Don’t worry so much about the money. It’s better to fly often--you make quicker progress. I didn’t fly often enough and it took much longer, which means MORE money. Aviation goal: To be the best taildragger pilot I can be! Advice for student pilots: Enjoy--you will never be the same. Flying will forever change the way you look at the world. Aviation goal: Looking for a perfect fit with a major airline.
