The Seminar was produced in
conjunction with the Office of the
Clerk and covered: The work of Select

Parliament who had spoken at one of
the Trust’s Parliamentary Seminars.)
Also included in the day’s programme

Winter Business Overview
This year’s Business Overview was well attended by both
Members of Parliament and Corporate guests, despite the date
clashing with a number of valedictory speeches taking place in
the Debating Chamber.
The Trust organises Business Overviews for Members of
Parliament and Corporate guests where a prominent speaker
from the business world is invited to talk on a subject that may
be topical or be of specific interest to New Zealand and its
economy.
The guest speaker was Russell Stanners, Chief Executive of
Vodafone New Zealand, who spoke with enthusiasm on “Global
trends in communications and what it means for New Zealand”,
outlining future trends that will excite and challenge the market.
Guest speaker, Russell Stanners, addresses guests

Membership from the Speaker, Rt Hon David Carter.
Kris completed an attachment with Vodafone.
Business Study Programme Attachments
A number of attachments have been completed this year and the following are some of the comments received:
Kris Faafoi (Vodafone):
"My time at Vodafone gave me the opportunity to drill in to detail around the Rural Broadband Initiative and to better
understand the telecommunications market. With Vodafone such a large player in the market it was useful to get an
understanding of how they operate to maintain market position. It was also a fantastic opportunity to question the
company on issues of a controversial nature - i.e. surveillance. The attachment was very enjoyable and well organised
and I have made contacts that will be very useful in my role as a Member of Parliament".
Hon Kate Wilkinson (NZ Agriseeds):
"The story of Agriseeds is a great story - pasture and pasture production is often overlooked in its importance to our
rural sector and to our economy in general. Agriseed's vision is to provide New Zealand farmers the best pasture they
can grow and delivering a better New Zealand economy - this was a fascinating attachment to not only gain a better
understanding and awareness of the importance of pasture to our primary production but also to learn the challenges
of breeding, production and marketing of new varieties. It is "not just grass"!I! It is about "turning ordinary grass into
"extraordinary pastures". From the laboratory to the farm - learn about the process. Highly recommended".
Jonathan Young (Deloitte):
"This attachment gave me an overview rarely given to someone outside the organisation. Understanding the culture,
structure and relationships with clients was a key learning experience in this attachment. I would not hesitate to
recommend this attachment to anyone who is intrigued at what happens under the bonnet".

Spark visit 2015
A visit to Spark New Zealand (formerly Telecom) was
planned for this year, but unfortunately had to be delayed
due to time constraints. However, the company will host
new and returning Members of Parliament at a special
introductory session in early 2015. Spark New Zealand
has been going through some radical changes recently,
in an industry that itself changes extremely quickly. This
visit is intended to give MPs an inside understanding of
the new company and a view of the changing face of
telecommunications to individuals and businesses.
New Corporate Member
Transpower, who were members from 2006 until 2008, will
be re-joining the Trust with effect from 1 January 2015. The
Trust welcomes Transpower back as a Corporate member
and looks forward to their involvement in activities next
year. This will bring the total membership to 75.
