Waitangi Tribunal Site Visit Part A
Sunday, 6th April 2014
This is the first of a two-part site visit for the Hokianga Taiwhenua as part of Hearing Week
8 of the Wai 1040 Te Paparahi o Te Raki Inquiry.
During this Hokianga hearing week site visit, the Tribunal will be invited to participate in a
site visit by sea to experience sites of significance of the hapu of the Hokianga. These site
visits have been developed along a regional theme, with the first hearing week covering
coastal sites of significance along the southern shores of the Hokianga. This is the rohe of
nga hapu o Hokianga. The claimants would like to welcome the Tribunal to experience the
wairua of a few selected sites of significance to the hapu that they will be speaking to
during the Hokianga Hearing Week.
Part A of this site visit will take the Waitangi Tribunal from Moria Marae by bus to Rawene,
where sites of significance will be discussed en route to the ferry terminal. The Tribunal
will then board the ferry at Rawene and be shown sites of significance along the Hokianga
Harbour.

Whirinaki to Rawene
Whirinaki Native School
Original school opened in 1853 then established in 1873 under the Native Schools Act 1867; 1881
site was investigated; in 1955 a further 3 acres taken f or the school; 1973 school closed but later
used for recreational grounds and the Kura.
Utilised as a temporary hospital during the Influenza epidemic in 1918
Te Ramaroa o Kupe
Ancestral maunga referred to as the starting and ending point of Te Whitiki o Tupoto (Tupoto’s
belt)
Forms the southern rohe boundary
of Te Hikutu
Significant to the hapu of the area
Waoku block
Returned Soldiers Blocks - Number
of blocks taken for returned
serviceman and balloted out.
Pakeha families received the farms.

Originally 1,340 acres Native Land Court award 1868 to 5 owners; In 1876 1,321 acres were
purchased by the Crown. Judge Manning having informed the Crown that no problem removing
alienation restrictions as long as owners wished to sell. Reclamation of lands
Oue No.2
Originally 260 acres awarded to 22 owners in 1875. Crown purchased the whole block in 1876.
Sale confirmed by the Court in 1883
Omanaia River
Boundary between Te Hikutu and Ngati Hau and Ngati Kaharau. Wai 700 claim boundary.
Papahurihia’s Pa site
Papahurihia was a significant rangatira and tohunga of Te Hikutu, Ngati Hau and Ngati Kaharau;
was involved in the Northern Wars and ran the Whare Wananga at Puriritahi

Kupe picked Kawakawa from this block and used it to try and reverse his incantation on Maheno;
1870 the 109 acre Block was awarded to 3 owners and was later sold to H Maning.
