SOCIO-ECONOMICS COURSE
Liceo delle Scienze Umane
Its core subjects are Human Sciences, Law, Economics and Finance; Maths lessons also
include IT. The school curriculum includes the learning of two foreign languages: English
and French or Spanish.
After a five-year diploma course, students will have the chance to attend any University
faculty or any other course of higher education. They can also be employed in agencies,
cooperative associations, groups and organizations that are active in the field of welfare
services to children (youth workers), youths, as well as old and disabled people.
Our "Liceo delle Scienze Umane" is characterized by the particular care for
teaching/learning processes, the students as individuals with ever-changing needs and
personal inspirations and the direct and close cooperation with the students' families.
In addition, the students of the third, fourth and fifth year are also given the opportunity of
participating in specific training courses and getting a job experience either for a whole
week during the school year (internship) or during the summer holidays (alternanza
scuola-lavoro).
Several other extra-curricular projects or activities are included in our "Piano dell'Offerta
Formativa" (educational projects).
Socio-economics course (LES)
Students are educated and trained for the purpose of applying their specific skills in the
interpretation of social, cultural, economic phenomena (with a particular reference to the
management of agencies, associations, organizations and other institutions that are
involved in welfare services/social care), communication strategies and legal, financial
issues.
In addition to this, the learning of two foreign languages and several scientific subjects as
an integral part of the official school curriculum allow students to become more Europeanoriented and cope with the complexities of contemporary society as a whole.
This course is particularly suited to those students who:
- are interested in socio-cultural phenomena and issues;
- are interested in all those activities related to the complexities of communication
strategies, intercultural relationships, welfare services;
- are interested in the close connection between Human Sciences and Legal/Financial
issues;
- are interested in learning two foreign languages and cultures and want to feel part of a
more and more European-oriented country (e.g. certification of skills based on the
Common European Framework of Reference)

The school program encourages interaction, communication and reaction to the stimuli
from the outside world, giving rise to an array of activities involving the territorial dynamics
through its main institutions. Among the most important projects, carried on through the
years, and still active in continuously updating forms , one can find stages in design offices
or enterprises, the school-to-work alternation, the visiting of construction sites and road
works, the environmental-friendly recovery of buildings turned to a different use , the
evaluation assessment for land register, the restoration and preservation of buildings.

Laboratory for Didactic Robotics
The ITCS Erasmo da Rotterdam is a technical high school located in a suburb of Milan in
northern Italy, with a student population that is strongly heterogeneous and, often, not so
easy to coax into deepening their scientific and technological knowledge.
Four years ago was activated an open space named the Permanent Laboratory for
Didactic Robotics, where students can experiment in a different way from the standard
classroom. Here, they approach the technical disciplines in an interactive environment in
which pupils can negotiate some unexpected aspects of the subject matter, make choices
regarding the subjects they will pursue, organize their own jobs and receive direct
feedback from the results of their actions. In other words, they get to experiment in an
“active learning space” based on the old and well-known model of “situated cognition” ,
where students Collaborate with one another and with their instructor while pursuing a
common goal with a shared understanding.
In this learning space, pupils can practice a “cognitive apprenticeship” that uses problemsolving methodologies. The teacher assumes the role of a “professional expert” who
proposes specific processes involving authentic tasks and strategies, and allows students
to try them independently, coaching only as needed.
Robotics was the natural choice to provide a fertile breeding ground for the convergence of
different disciplines and the exchange of knowledge. We decided that the fun of taking part
in the RoboCup Junior competition would provide a strong stimulus to boost student
participation.
