Prior to the event, students research various forms and genres of storytelling, learn about stories from other cultures and discover the impact of storytelling throughout history. They then either choose a story or create their own story to tell during the Imagination Fair. They will also have an opportunity to enjoy hearing as well as interacting with a professional storyteller. In addition, students will participate in a hands-on creative problem solving activity and share their ideas with other students. Region 7 Education Service Center Region 7 ESC is one of 20 regional education service centers statewide that participates in the planning, development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of innovative educational programs. Region 7 currently serves 106 school districts, the largest amount of school districts of any Education Service Center in the state. Housed in the Center for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Advanced Academic Services (Gifted and Talented Education) works to provide educators the necessary training and professional development they need in order to “differentiate,” or make appropriate curricular and instructional matches and modifications, for students who have been identified as gifted. One of many programs that Region 7 offers for student participation and inter-district communications is The Imagination Fair. The most important question for a storyteller to ask is, “Do I like this story?” There is a wide variety of tales from which to choose: folktales, fairy tales, myths, legends, fables, fantasy, and modern literature—both fiction and nonfiction. The story you choose should have: • one main plot with a logical sequence of events that create clear and vivid pictures in the mind of the listener. • a variety of sensory and visual images that create a “movie in the mind” of the audience. The language should be descriptive and colorful. • a limited number of characters. • colorful characters who are interesting and believable or, in the case of a traditional fairy tale, who clearly represent qualities such as greed, beauty, and goodness. • emotional appeal, courage, love, laughter, excitement, sentiment, and plenty of action. • a strong introduction that grabs the audience’s attention, sets the mood, and leads swiftly into action. • a satisfying conclusion. Learning and Presenting Stories 1. Find or write a simple story that you truly enjoy. 2. Read the story several times, both silently and orally. 3. Put the story away and visualize the story. Make a movie in your mind imagining the character, setting, and action. 4. Think through the sequence of events. Make a story map or outline of the story. 5. Think through the characterization of each person in the story. How will you distinguish one from another? Do you need to add dialogue? Is there extraneous detail that adds nothing to the story? 6. How will you begin and end the story? How will you “grab” the audience? Are there any of the author’s phrases that you want to be sure to use? 7. Read the story again. Then, using the outline or story map, tell the story out loud without an audience. 8. Put the map or outline down and say it again out loud. If you get stuck, refer back to the outline or the map. 9. Practice one more time, alone. You may wish to tape yourself and review the tape, listening for gaps in the story. 10. Tell the story to a small group in the classroom.
