Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
– October 5 de Octubre - Vigésimo Septimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI, PATRON SAINT OF ECOLOGICAL JUSTICE
In this week's parable (Mt 21:33-43), a landowner planted a vineyard,
leased it to tenants to raise and deliver his crop. When it came time to collect, the
landowner sends his representatives to collect his crop, finally sending his own son
each of whom is killed by the tenants due to a major flaw in their character: GREED.
At the end we have the haunting last phrase of the passage: "...the kingdom of God
will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." To
me, the 'kingdom of God' refers to God’s beautiful and perfect creation (our mother
earth) gifted to us as our home, to care and protect. The Gospel tells us if we're not
good caretakers, this kingdom will be taken away. This is a striking and blatant
warning to us, to be responsible caretakers.
The greedy tenants were willing to kill in order to make a profit. They offered no
respect, even for the landowner's own son. We can see this in various ways in our world
society with huge corporations concerned with nothing more than the bottom line. Many are
willing to do just about anything, including destroy this beautiful creation we call Earth, our
home, in order to make a profit.
Last weekend, there were over 400,000 people who marched through the streets
of New York City, joining in the summit of over 2,800 other solidarity events from around the
world, to raise their voices together on the issue of climate change. For twenty years, it has
been known that humanity has had detrimental effects on the climate and world leaders have
done little to change the effects.
St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast is celebrated on October 4, teaches us how to be
good caretakers and to respect all life in its entirety. He offers an alternative vision of what it
means to be truly human in a deep relationship with God, other human beings and non-humans.
In this age of ecological crisis, scientists, leaders of other faiths, those who profess no faith,
diverse scholars and ordinary believers have named Francis as their inspiration. In 1979 Pope
John Paul II named St. Francis as the Patron Saint of Ecology. Why does Francis have such broad
appeal?
Francis’ passionate and sensory love of all creation as God’s handiwork. His profound
appreciation of the beauty and goodness of creation filled him with even deeper
love and gratitude for God, the source of such abundant blessing and diverse
fullness.
Francis experienced God’s presence in all creation. He sensed that the God who became
flesh in Jesus Christ is still, and always will be, a real presence in the world. He
reminds us of the intrinsic, enduring goodness of creation as both an outflow and
home of God’s generous love.
The Canticle of Creatures best conveys Francis’ own expression of his relationship with
creation and the Creator. Francis recognized all aspects of creation as his
“brother” or “sister.” He reveled in the sun, gazed upon the stars, danced with
the air, was drawn to fire, marveled at water, and caressed the earth. The Canticle is a celebration of God’s love that is visible in all creation. All created things
are a sign and a revelation (sacrament) of the Creator who leaves a divine imprint
everywhere. Even more, the Canticle cannot properly be understood apart from
Francis’ love for Jesus Christ and his devotion to the Incarnation and Passion. The
humility of God, that led God to enter creation, infinitely dignified all of creation.
Francis modeled a path of contemplative action with his dedication to living the gospel,
united to his passionate love of creation. His prayerful grappling with the pain of
the marginalized, such as the leper, moved him to act with compassion. He thereby mediated and embodied God’s ongoing love toward the ever-present risen
Christ. He strove for just relations not only between human beings, but with other
creatures and with the earth itself.
Francis’ vision, accurately retrieved, is a powerful witness to what a renewed
vision of humanity in relationship with nature can contribute to our world society. Francis
challenges us in the practice of living one’s spiritual life with a commitment to ecological integrity.
The example of St. Francis of Assisi can inspire us to respond to the cry of the
poor, to the cry of the earth with love, compassion, and generosity.
Will the Kingdom of God be taken away from us? Or will it be given back to us to
continue in its care giving?
As Saint Francis prayed for wisdom and guidance before the crucifix, let us also
pray fervently for our own conversion of heart, to carry out God’s command.

Most High, glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart and give me
true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity,
sense and knowledge, Lord, that I may carry out
Your holy and true command.

SAN FRANCISCO DE ASÍS, PATRONO DE JUSTICIA ECOLÓGICA
En la parábola de esta semana (Mt 21:33-43), un terrateniente plantó
una viña, la arrendó a inquilinos para recaudar y entregar su cosecha. Cuando
llegó el momento de recoger, el terrateniente envío a sus representantes para
recoger su cosecha, finalmente envió a su propio hijo, cada uno de ellos es asesinado por los inquilinos, debido a un defecto importante en su carácter: la codicia.
Al final tenemos la última frase inquietante del pasaje: ".. .el Reino de Dios será
arrebatado y dado a un pueblo que producirá su fruto." Para mí, el 'Reino de Dios'
se refiere a la creación de Dios hermosa y perfecta (nuestra madre tierra) que
regaló a nosotros como nuestro hogar, para cuidar y proteger. El Evangelio nos
dice que si no somos buenos cuidadores, este reino nos será quitado. Esto es una llamativa y
evidente advertencia para nosotros, para ser vigilantes responsables.
Los inquilinos codiciosos estaban dispuestos a matar a fin de obtener un beneficio.
No ofrecieron ningún respeto, incluso por el hijo del terrateniente. Podemos ver esto de diversas maneras en nuestra sociedad mundial con grandes empresas interesadas en nada más que
la línea de fondo. Muchos están dispuestos a hacer cualquier cosa, incluyendo destruir esta
hermosa creación que llamamos tierra, nuestra hogar, con el fin de obtener un beneficio.
La semana pasada, hubo más de 400.000 personas que marcharon por las calles
de la ciudad de Nueva York, uniéndose a otros mas de 2,800 eventos de solidaridad de todo el
mundo, para elevar sus voces juntos sobre el tema del cambio climático en la Cumbre. Durante
veinte años, se ha sabido que la humanidad ha tenido efectos perjudiciales para el clima y los
líderes mundiales han hecho poco para cambiar los efectos.
San Francisco de Asís, cuya fiesta se celebra el 4 de octubre, nos enseña a ser
buenos guardianes y respetar la vida en su totalidad. Ofrece una visión alternativa de lo que
significa ser verdaderamente humano en una relación profunda con Dios, otros seres humanos y
no humanos. En esta época de crisis ecológica, científicos, líderes de otras religiones, quienes
no profesan ninguna fe, diversos estudiosos y creyentes ordinarios han nombrado a Francisco
como su inspiración. En 1979 el Papa John Paul II había llamado a San Francisco como el Santo
Patrono de la Ecología. ¿Por qué tiene tan amplio atractivo San Francisco?
El amor apasionado y sensorial de Francisco para toda la creación como obra de Dios. Su
profunda apreciación de la belleza y la bondad de la creación lo llenó aún más de
profundo amor y gratitud a Dios, la fuente de esta abundante bendición y plenitud
diversa.
Francisco experimentó la presencia de Dios en toda la creación. Sintió que el Dios que se
hizo carne en Jesucristo es todavía y siempre será, una presencia real en el mundo. Él nos recuerda la intrínseca bondad de la creación como una salida y como el
hogar del amor de Dios.
El Cántico de las criaturas transmite la propia expresión de la relación de Francisco ación
con la creación y el Creador. Francisco reconoció todos los aspectos de la creación
como su "hermano" o "hermana". Él se deleitaba con el sol, miraba las estrellas,
bailó con el aire, fue elaborado para disparar, se maravillaba de agua y acariciaba
la tierra. El canto es una celebración del amor de Dios que es visible en toda la

Francisco modeló una ruta de acción contemplativa con su dedicación a vivir el Evangelio,
unido a su amor apasionado de la creación. Su oración forcejeo con el dolor de los
marginados, como el leproso, que lo movió a actuar con compasión. Tal modo
medió y encarno el amor de Dios hacia el Cristo resucitado siempre presente. Él
se esforzó por las relaciones no sólo entre los seres humanos, pero con otros
seres y con la propia tierra.
La visión de Francisco, obtenido con precisión, es un poderoso testimonio de qué
puede aportar una visión renovada de la humanidad en relación con la naturaleza a nuestra
sociedad mundial. Francisco nos reta en la práctica de vivir la vida espiritual con un compromiso
de integridad ecológica. El ejemplo de San Francisco de Asís puede inspirarnos para atender el
clamor de los pobres, al grito de la tierra con amor, compasión y generosidad.
¿El Reino de Dios será apartado de nosotros? ¿O se nos devolverá para continuar
cuidándolo? Como San Francisco oró por sabiduría y guía frente al crucifijo, también nosotros
Oremos fervientemente por nuestra propia conversión del corazón, para
llevar a cabo el mandato de Dios.
Oración de San Francisco ante el crucifijo:
Altísimo, glorioso Dios,
ilumina las tinieblas de mi corazón y dame
fe verdadera, cierta esperanza y caridad perfecta,
sentido y conocimiento, Señor, que puedo cumplir
su orden sagrada y verdadero mandato.

150 YEARS
LOS FRANCISCANOS DUBUQUE CELEBRAN
150 AÑOS
On June 8, the Sisters of St. Francis began “150 Days of
Celebration” in honor of the 150th anniversary of their founding.
The Dubuque Franciscans’ roots are in Herford, Germany,
where foundress Mother Xavier Ternehr, cared for orphans and nursed
the sick. Other young women asked to join her in this work and the
congregation was founded on November 4, 1864.
During the 150 days from June 8, 2014 to November 4,
2014, the sisters will celebrate in variety of ways:
By reflecting on 150 events from their history that have been
complied into a new book.
By visiting parishes in July, August and September where they
have served.
By visiting and praying at every gravesite of all the deceased
Dubuque Franciscan sisters.
And by gathering for a public celebration from 2 to 4pm, Sunday,
October 5, 2014 at Loras
College.
The sisters also invite the public to
celebrate their 150 years of prayer
and service by pledging to serve
others.
El 8 de junio, las Hermanas de San Francisco comenzaron
"150 Días de Celebración" en honor a los 150 años de su fundación. Las raíces de los franciscanos Dubuque están en Herford,
Alemania, donde la fundadora Madre Xavier Turner, cuido de
huérfanos y de enfermos. Otras mujeres jóvenes pidieron unirse a
ella en este trabajo y asi la congregación fue fundada el 4 de noviembre de 1864.
Durante los 150 días a partir del 8 de junio 2014 al 4 de
noviembre 2014, las hermanas celebrarán en diversas formas:
• Al reflexionar sobre 150 eventos de su historia que se han recopilado en un nuevo libro.
• Al visitar durante los meses de de julio, agosto y septiembre, las
parroquias en los que han servido.
• Al visitar y rezar en cada tumba de todas hermanas franciscanas
Dubuque que han fallecido.
• Y reuniendose para una celebración pública
de 2 a 4 pm, el Domingo, 05 de octubre 2014
en el colegio Loras.
Las hermanas también invitan al público
a celebrar sus 150 años de oración y servicio
al comprometerse a servir a los demás.

ayuda para el buen funcionamiento y uso de los salones para las juntas y
formacion de los ministerios. No podemos permitir que los salones se usen por
personas ajenas a la comunidad para hacer sus fiestas, tales como Baby Showers,
Graduaciones, Quinceañeras, etc… las personas de la comunidad o ministerios
deben solicitor un permiso en la oficina y llenar una forma para responsabilizarse
y llevar un control.
Usan los salones y los dejan sucios, es demasiado trabajo para los de mantenimiento
Esto no se puede seguir permitiendo aqui en la parroquia!

We ask to all the leaders and members of the ministries of the
parish, for your support in the proper operation and use of the
rooms for meetings and training . We can not allow that rooms
are used by people outside the community to their parties, such
as Baby Showers, Graduations, Quinceañeras, etc ... people in
the community or ministries should request a permission in the
office and fill out a form for responsability and to have control.
They use classrooms and leave dirty, it's too much work for the
maintenance people.
This can not be allow here in the parish!

St. Pius Catholic Church’s 8th Grade Religious Formation

The St. Pius X Catholic Church 2013-2014 8th grade religious
formation class led my catechists Martha and Tom Chavez,
felt compassion for many of their peers and other youth
throughout our community that do not attend religious formation. They undertook the challenge evangelize and reach
out to them utilizing social media which has become one of
the most powerful means of information gathering and education for the youth of today. The class came up with the scripts
and did the role playing for this outreach project. The video
project illustrates modern interpretations of the Gospels,
Psalms and passages from the Bible. It is uploaded in You
tube under the title: St. Pius Catholic Church Religious
Formation Video (2014). You can do a search on the title to
view it. Please take a few moments to see what wonderful
work can be done by our youth who want to spread the Good
News and be of service.
