ICD-10- PCS Coding Four-Part Series October 22 and 29

ICD-10- PCS Coding Four-Part Series
October 22 and 29, December 2 and 9, 2014; 11:00 - 12:30 pm CT
Overview
The deadline is set for October 1, 2015 and hospitals and health systems need to take full advantage of this
additional time to prepare for the ICD-10 transition. This four-part webinar series focuses on helping coders,
coding managers and members of a hospital or health system’s ICD-10 implementation team understand ICD10-PCS coding system design and root operation groups as well as work through common and more complex
coding scenarios to be better prepared for on-time and efficient implementation.
Target Audience
Hospital coders, coding supervisors and managers, ICD-10 team leaders and members, clinical documentation
improvement specialists and others interested in learning more about the ICD-10-PCS classification system.
Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 1 of 2 | October 22, 2014
The ICD-10-PCS classification system uses specific definitions of root operations that can be performed on a
variety of different body systems and body parts. Participants will be introduced to the system design and how
to use the tools of the system to assign codes.
This webinar will cover the first four root operation groups available for coding, their definitions and unique
issues related to assigning the root operation character. Participants select root operations and code basic cases
in this session to prepare for the Part 2 webinar session.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:
 Describe the system design for ICD-10-PCS.
 Explain how to build a code using the index and tables.
 Identify the root operations in the first four root operation groups.
 Identify the common feature within each of the first four root operation groups.
Prerequisites: None
Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 2 of 2 | October 29, 2014
The ICD-10-PCS classification system uses specific definitions of root operations that can be performed on a
variety of different body systems and body parts. This webinar session will review the final five ICD-10-PCS
root operation groups available for coding, their definitions and unique issues related to assigning the root
operation character. Participants will be led on a tour of the remaining sections of ICD-10-PCS to see the
complete system. Participation in this two-part webinar series will prepare attendees for additional WHA
webinar offerings focused on coding case scenarios, offered in December 2014.
1
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:
 Describe the system design for ICD-10-PCS.
 Explain how to build a code using the index and tables.
 Identify the root operations in the last five root operation groups.
 Identify the common feature within each of the last five root operation groups.
 Explain the use of the remaining PCS sections.
Prerequisites: “Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 1 of 2” webinar, October 22
Coding Scenarios Using ICD-10-PCS | December 2, 2014
Building on the “Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Parts 1 and 2” webinar programs, this webinar will help
participants differentiate between the seven approaches used within procedure coding systems (PCS).
Participants will also learn to use the body part and device keys in coding case scenarios in ICD-10-PCS.
Participants will learn to make root operation selections and assign all of the characters for the codes included in
10 common ICD-10-PCS cases. This webinar will prepare participants for the December 9 webinar focused on
complex coding decisions, but is not a prerequisite.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:
 Explain the basic concepts and design of ICD-10-PCS.
 Differentiate among the seven approaches used within the PCS system.
 Summarize why we use the body part key and device key.
 Identify the root operations assigned for 10 common PCS cases.
 Determine the remaining characters in each code for 10 common PCS cases.
Prerequisites: “Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 1 of 2” webinar, October 22
“Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 2 of 2” webinar, October 29
Complex Coding Decisions Using ICD-10-PCS | December 9, 2014
Building on the “Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Parts 1 and 2” webinar programs as well as the “Coding
Scenarios Using ICD-10-PCS” program, participants will learn to make difficult selections between root
operations that seem similar. Critical thinking skills will be stressed and helpful tips will be provided to help
participants learn to differentiate between the groups and the individual root operations. Intended as the
capstone of the ICD-10-PCS four-part series, participants will make decisions and code 10 more complex ICD10-PCS cases.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:
 Describe the system design for ICD-10-PCS.
 Compare and contrast the root operation groups.
 Differentiate between similar root operations using critical thinking skills.
 Identify the root operations assigned for 10 common, but more complex PCS cases.
 Determine the remaining characters in each code for 10 common, but more complex PCS cases.
Prerequisites: “Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 1 of 2” webinar, October 22
“Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS: Part 2 of 2” webinar, October 29
Recommended: “Coding Scenarios Using ICD-10-PCS” webinar, December 2
