QCS Breakfast
From the Head of College
Last week, Year Twelve students intending on going to university sat the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test. The
QCS Test provides the mechanism through which internal assessment grades are moderated to equate standards
of achievement across the State. The QCS Tests are quite difficult. Pleasingly, our students felt they were
prepared and handled the tests well. Results of the QCS Tests will come out early in December along with OP
(Overall Position) scores, which determine university entrance.
A special thank you to Mrs Wendy Jurss, Head of Curriculum, and all teachers of Years Eleven and Twelve for their
extensive work in preparing the cohort over the past eighteen months.
Of recent times, a number of people have been asking about the future of the current OP system. In most forums
there is a strong view that Queensland will move to some form of external examinations. The QCS Test, by name,
is a skills test and is not subject specific. It is most likely that the QCS Test will be replaced by external tests for
individual subjects and that the results of these tests will form fifty per cent of a student’s overall grade in each
subject.
Should the decision be made to move to external examinations, the transition will not occur quickly. The
announcement of such a change should be delivered to a Year Nine cohort, which provides three years for that
cohort to prepare for the new assessment regime. Many are suggesting Year Nine 2015 will be the first cohort to
experience the change.
Congratulations to the nine College teams who competed in the finals of the Greater Brisbane Conference last
weekend. Four teams won Premierships on the weekend, taking the number of Premierships for the year to
fifteen, which is the highest number won to date.
Thank you to Mr Andy Holmes, Head of Sport, Mr James Patmore, JTAS Co-ordinator and all coaches and
managers; staff, parents and past students, for the opportunities provided to our students across the year. It is
wonderful to see such a high level of student participation, the degree of success individually and collective and,
most importantly, the manner in which sport is played at TSAC. Thank you also to the many parents who support
our teams each week. It is great to see such a large number of spectators support our teams.
As this is the last edition of Threads for the term, I would like to wish all members of the College community a
safe and enjoyable holiday break. I look forward to catching up during Term Four.
Mr Steve Croft
Head of College
From the Head of Primary
A term often used today in the educational arena is Lifelong Learning. The importance of continuing to learn and
grow, experience and seek new knowledge and skills, is possibly more important in today's world than ever
before. As our world continues along the path of rapid change in technological advancement, it is predicted that
many of the jobs our children will do in their adult years have not yet been invented. Our young students will
require skills that enable them to change and adapt in the modern world.
This week I had the wonderful opportunity to continue my personal professional learning through attending the
biannual Independent Primary School Heads Conference, where the focus of learning was how to best prepare
primary school students for success. Qualities such as emotional resilience, collaboration, flexibility and strong
written and verbal communication skills were predominant, however the word tenacity - being able to keep trying
when faced with challenges - has now been identified as a necessary skill into the future.
When asked what our greatest achievements are in our personal lives or what we are most proud of, people don't
ever talk about something that was easy to get. The answers are always around an achievement that came with
hard work, commitment and tenacity. As human beings, we are most happy when we accomplish tasks that
challenge our mental and/or physical being.
As a College, our students are offered many varied opportunities to develop these important lifelong traits.
Whether through challenges in the classroom, on the sporting field or in creative arts lessons, students are
encouraged from the earliest years in Kindergarten to work hard, try and try again, work through issues,
collaborate in the learning and sharing of ideas and to express themselves with confidence through varied means
of communication. Our students are being well prepared for their future.

Student Focus
Brisbane Writer’s Festival
On Thursday, 4 September, Year Six students attended the Brisbane Writer’s Festival, held in the Cultural Precinct
at South Bank. The students attended three sessions during the day, the first being a performance of Australian
author Morris Gleitzman’s most recent publication, Loyal Creatures. The students were very moved by the
performance and were excited to ask Morris some questions at the end of the session.
Students also attended a session hosted by Tristan Bancks, which they found thoroughly engaging and humorous.
Tristan demonstrated some digital writing tools, talked about how he writes his stories and where he finds
inspiration. He also read several extracts from his books and got the students involved in some brainstorming. It
was a fantastic day that was enjoyed by all involved.
Middle School Girls’ Soccer Team
The girls enjoyed a hard-fought competition, winning two games against Brisbane Christian College (3-0) and
Westside Christian College (3-1), before drawing 0-0 against an extremely strong Citipointe outfit that contained a
couple of Met West players. Unfortunately, fatigue played a part in the girls losing 2-0 to Genesis Christian
College in the last group game, which was a back-to-back game in the mid-day heat.
Overall, the girls finished a highly creditable Third. Special mention must go to Jasmine Jackson, who was voted
Junior Player of the Tournament. This is a highly prestigious honour and a real reflection of the sport’s progress at
the College in a very short space of time.
Primary Running Club
A reminder to parents and students of the Primary Running Club that if there has been heavy rain prior to, or is
raining the morning of training, please assume it has been cancelled. Thank you.

Secondary Campus Library – Book Week 2014 Competition
The Secondary Campus Library ran a competition during August to celebrate Book Week 2014. The competition
required students to choose a book that had been made into a movie and to write their opinion on whether they
preferred the book or the movie adaptation.
We had entries across each year level from Years Seven to Twelve. Congratulations to the below students whose
entries won them a $50 voucher to spend on books, cinema tickets or at JB Hi Fi. Fantastic effort! Special thanks
also go to Mr Newton, who designed the Weebly site for the competition entries.

sections in Dance, Instrumental Music and Visual Art. Syllabus and Entry forms are available at Reception or on
the College website.
Strings Soiree
The Springfield Anglican College’s annual Strings Soiree took place on Monday evening, 1 September, in the
Multipurpose Centre. The event featured all of the College’s string ensembles (Animato Senior Strings, Animato
Junior Strings, Dolce Strings, Primary and Secondary Chamber Groups) as well as all strings students in Years
Three to Twelve, with just under 200 students participating!
It was a fantastic opportunity for all students to share what they had been learning in classes and rehearsals
through a programme of exciting and entertaining music. The event was well attended by family and friends, with
little standing room left in the Multipurpose Centre! Overall, it was a very successful evening. Congratulations to
all!
Years One and Two Performance Morning
On Tuesday, 9 September, parents of the Instrumental students in Years One and Two attended a performance
morning. Students took the opportunity to demonstrate learning techniques and perform repertoire they had
been working on in class time. It was a lovely opportunity for parents to observe their children in a class
environment and learn ways in which they could practice at home.

South Queensland U14 Q7s Tournament
Congratulations to the TSAC U14’s Rugby team who competed in the South Queensland 7’s Tournament last
Friday, 5 September. The speed of the games were frantic and impressive defence from Elijah Pene ensured the
score-lines remained close. The final game saw several players score their first try for the College which were
celebrated in style. Highlight of the day was witnessing Dylan Mason’s burst down the wing to score an
impressive solo try. Jackson Hayden also notched up three tries for the tournament.

McMillian provided an insight of the Media Centre. Daniel McGraw, who was competing on the day, gave the
students some tips on how to improve their golf swing. After morning tea, the students had the opportunity to
